Endoscopic findings of maxillary sinus after middle face fractures.

Of 93 patients with fractures of the mid-face who appeared for postoperative check-up, 25 were selected by chance for sinuscopy of the maxillary sinus. Chronic inflammatory mucosal changes occurred in 35 per cent; other pathological sequelae included solitary polyps, mucocele, scarry synechia, and prolapse of orbital fat and osteoma. In spite of these findings, all patients were free of complaints. The primary surgical revision was therefore declined in favour of a waiting attitude. For the diagnostic clarification of late complications, sinuscopy with Hopkin's optics offers a simple and effic…

Lift with precision: Microsurgical application in maxillary sinus elevation.

BACKGROUND: Sinus augmentation is a key procedure in implant dentistry for managing vertical bone loss in the posterior maxilla. However, conventional techniques may present limitations in precision, complication management, and ergonomics. The operating microscope has been introduced to enhance precision during procedures performed in anatomically complex maxillary sinus regions. This review aims to examine the fundamental principle, clinical application, and instrumentation of microscope-assisted sinus augmentation, with a focus on lateral and transcrestal approaches, and to evaluate current…

Detection of maxillary sinus pathologies using deep learning algorithms.

PURPOSE: Deep learning, a subset of machine learning, is widely utilized in medical applications. Identifying maxillary sinus pathologies before surgical interventions is crucial for ensuring successful treatment outcomes. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is commonly employed for maxillary sinus evaluations due to its high resolution and lower radiation exposure. This study aims to assess the accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in detecting maxillary sinus pathologies from CBCT scans. METHODS: A dataset comprising 1000 maxillary sinuses (MS) from 500 patients was analyzed …

Fish: a new xenograft source for maxillary sinus lifting.

OBJECTIVE: Although autogenous grafting is accepted as the gold standard in intraoral grafting, xenogenous grafts are frequently used in sinus lift surgeries due to their osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of fish spine-derived xenogenic grafts in sinus augmentation surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, a fish spine-derived xenogenic graft was produced for comparison with autogenous graft and bovine derived xenogenic grafts. Twenty-one New Zealand rabbits were used. Autogenous grafts (AG- Group 1), as well as bovine-derived (bHA

Endoscopic-Modified Medial Maxillectomy for the Nonfunctioning Maxillary Sinus.

BACKGROUND: Middle meatal antrostomy (MMA) is the traditional intervention for chronic maxillary sinusitis but often fails to correct a nonfunctioning maxillary sinus that has lost its capability for mucociliary clearance. Endoscopic-modified medial maxillectomy (EMMM) can reshape the maxillary sinus and avoid a "sumping" effect, preventing secondary bacterial colonization, encouraging dependent drainage, and promoting effective nasal irrigation. OBJECTIVES: We describe a modification of the EMMM surgical technique in patients with recalcitrant maxillary sinusitis and perioperative outcomes. …

Clinical and Histological Healing after Maxillary Sinus Floor Elevation.

Sinus floor elevation is a surgical procedure that allows for the insertion of the implant in the posterior region of the maxilla in case of insufficient volume of native bone. Several studies have reported a high success rate, and this has helped to spread this surgical procedure around the world. The subject has been extensively studied and this could lead researchers to think that no new scientific evidence can be provided. However, new ideas and discoveries show that research never reaches a conclusion, and that new information can be added all the time. This collection aimed to provide ne

Dynamic Maxillary Sinus Changes of Facial Vascularized Composite Allotransplants.

Skin is one of the target tissues of rejection in face transplants and, because of its easy accessibility, has become the gold standard in the diagnosis of rejection. The allograft contains deeper tissues where rejection can occur, but samples cannot be obtained because of difficult access. Deep tissue changes were monitored on computed tomographic scans of the midface in six face transplant recipients with the help of image segmentation. The maxillary sinus was identified as a dynamic anatomical compartment. Observed changes in volume of the aeration relative to the opacification (aeration co…

Platelet-Rich Plasma in Maxillary Sinus Augmentation: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Sinus augmentation can be performed with or without grafting biomaterials, and to date, there is no quality evidence regarding the augmentation of the sinus floor using only platelet concentrates, which can improve the healing period and enhance bone regeneration by stimulating angiogenesis and bone formation. The main objective of this paper was to assess the effect of the sole use of platelet concentrates in sinus augmentation in terms of newly formed bone, augmented bone height, and clinical outcomes and to assess the additional beneficial effects of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) i

Maxillary sinus osteoma: A case report and literature review.

This case report describes a rare presentation of an osteoma in the maxillary sinus picked up from an incidental finding on an orthopantomogram that was obtained to inform orthodontic treatment. While orthodontists principally use this radiograph to assess the developing dentition, aid treatment planning and monitor treatment, several peripheral anatomical sites are evident on this radiograph. We review the literature in relation to osteomas presenting in the craniofacial area along with its management. We provide examples of common radiopaque lesions along with their radiographic features tha…

Endoscopic Management of Maxillary Sinus Diseases of Dentoalveolar Origin.

Endoscopic surgery on the maxillary sinus has experienced significant advances in technique and approaches since the maxillary antrostomy was introduced in the 1980s. Disease processes that previously required open surgical approaches to the maxillary sinus can now be treated endoscopically while preserving form and function of the sinus and without injuring the maxillary sinus mucosa or disrupting normal mucociliary clearance. Understanding the techniques described in this article will allow surgeons to appropriately plan treatment strategies for patients with a variety of maxillary sinus dis…
