Exposure of normal and chronic bronchitis-like mucosa models to aerosolized carbon nanoparticles: comparison of pro-inflammatory oxidative stress and tissue injury/repair responses.

Carbon nanoparticles (CNP) are generated by incomplete combustion of diesel engines. Several epidemiological studies associated higher susceptibility to particulate matter related adverse respiratory outcomes with preexisting conditions like chronic bronchitis (CB). Therefore, we compared the effect of CNP exposure on primary bronchial epithelial cells (PBEC) developed in air-liquid interface (ALI) models of normal versus CB-like-mucosa.PBEC cultured at ALI represented normal mucosa (PBEC-ALI). To develop CB-like-mucosa (PBEC-ALI/CB), 1 ng/ml interleukin-13 was added to the basal media of PBEC

Mental health and depression as mediators between social media use screen time and academic integrity among tertiary students in Ghana.

In light of rising concerns over the psychological and academic consequences of excessive digital engagement among College of Education students, this study investigates the complex interplay between social media use, screen time, mental health, and academic outcomes. This study investigated the complex interplay between social media use, screen time, depression, mental health, assessment integrity, and internal assessment scores among tertiary students in Ghana using a cross-sectional correlational design. A total of 970 students from public Colleges of Education across Ghana were selected th

Social media use and depression among middle-aged and older Chinese adults: mediating roles of health literacy and perceived social support.

BACKGROUND: Most research on social media use and depression has focused on young adults. A few studies in middle-aged and older Chinese adults have reported a negative association, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among middle-aged and older adults (n = 2,743) in five cities of Hainan Province, China. Participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Social Media Use Integration Scale, the Short-Form Health Literacy Questionnaire, and the Perceived Social Support Scale. Mediation and moderation models were tested using

ADHD symptoms and problematic digital media use in emerging adults: Investigating the role of cognitive deficits as mediators.

This study examined the relationship between ADHD symptoms and problematic social media use (PSMU) and problematic gaming (PG) in a community sample of emerging adults. Cognitive deficits underlying ADHD - inhibitory control deficits, reward sensitivity, and temporal processing deficits - were investigated as potential mechanisms linking ADHD symptoms to PSMU and PG. In a sample of 111 emerging adults (Mage = 21.2, SD = 2.7; 84% female), ADHD symptoms, PSMU, and PG were assessed using self-report scales, while cognitive deficits were evaluated through both self-report scales and behavioural ta

Problematic social media use and cognitive performance in young adults: Associations with selective attention and inhibitory control.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic social media use (PSMU) has been associated with emotional and behavioral difficulties, yet its relationship with cognitive performance remains insufficiently understood. This study examined whether PSMU is associated with deficits in selective attention and inhibitory control, and whether sex moderates these associations. METHODS: A total of 943 Spanish young adults (18-35 years) completed the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) and two computerized tasks: the Stroop task, assessing selective attention, and the Simon task, assessing inhibitory control

The influence of Social Media Use of older adults on the Exercise Habits: The chain mediating effects of active coping strategies and perceived social support.

UNLABELLED: With the advancement of internet adaptation for the older adults, social media has increasingly become an important platform for older adults to access health information and maintain social connections. At the same time, older adults' Social Media Use behavior has a unique impact on the development and maintenance of their Exercise Habits. METHODS: To explore the mechanisms through which Social Media Use affects older adults' Exercise Habits, a cross-sectional design was employed. A convenience sampling method was used to select 1,119 individuals aged 60 and above. Social Media U

Fear of missing out and psychological well-being: Examining the dual pathways of problematic social media use and digital burnout.

The present study examined how fear of missing out (FoMO) relates to psychological well-being in a collectivist context through a sequential moderated mediation framework. Grounded in self-determination theory, the study assessed whether FoMO related to well-being indirectly via problematic social media use (PSMU) and digital burnout (emotional exhaustion), and whether free time management (FTM; goal-setting and evaluation) moderated these associations. Cross-sectional data were collected from 570 sports science undergraduates in Türkiye. Results indicated that (i) FoMO was positively associat

Emotional and behavioral impact of exposure to community violence in inner-city adolescents.

Used multiple methods and measures (i.e., youth report, psychiatric interviews, psychophysiological assessment) to investigate the emotional and behavioral impacts of exposure to community violence. Participants were 185 inner-city high school students (M age = 15.4 years; 42% female; 90% African American). Youth with high levels of community violence exposure reported more fears, anxiety, internalizing behavior, and negative life experiences than those with low exposure. No depression or externalizing behavior differences were observed. In a psychophysiological assessment in which adolescents

Cellular RNA is chemically modified by exposure to air pollution mixtures.

RNAs are more susceptible to modifications than DNA, and chemical modifications in RNA have an effect on their structure and function. This study aimed to characterize chemical effects on total RNA in human A549 lung cells after exposure to elevated levels of major secondary air pollutants commonly found in urban locations, including ozone (O3), acrolein (ACR) and methacrolein (MACR). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) were used to measure levels of interleukin (IL)-8 in the growth media and 8-oxoguanine (8OG) levels in total cellular RNA, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in the growth

Asbestos activates CH12.LX B-lymphocytes via macrophage signaling.

The impact of asbestos exposure on the development and progression of autoimmunity is becoming increasingly recognized as a public health issue. Epidemiological studies have shown an association between exposure to airborne silicates, such as asbestos, and autoimmunity, but the etiology remains unresolved. B1a B-lymphocytes have been implicated in autoimmune responses in mice, and splenic B1a cell numbers are altered following asbestos exposure. The purpose of this study was to explore the possible role of B1a B-lymphocytes in the production of pathogenic autoantibodies by testing the hypothes

I tweet, therefore I am: a systematic review on social media use and disorders of the social brain.

With rapid technological advances, social media has become an everyday form of human social interactions. For the first time in evolutionary history, people can now interact in virtual spaces where temporal, spatial, and embodied cues are decoupled from one another. What implications do these recent changes have for socio-cognitive phenotypes and mental disorders? We have conducted a systematic review on the relationships between social media use and mental disorders involving the social brain. The main findings indicate evidence of increased social media usage in individuals with psychotic sp

[Is one single exposure to asbestos life-threatening?].

The media occasionally reports on possible asbestos exposure during demolition of houses in an urban setting. The risk for the development of any asbestos-related cancer in these settings is considered to be lower than for that in occupational exposure. Offermans et al. examined a Dutch cohort of 58,279 workers in the period from 1986 to 2007. They concluded that the risk of lung cancer, laryngeal cancer and mesothelioma increased with exposure to asbestos. The risk of development of lung cancer was higher for anyone with increased years of exposure to asbestos fibre combined with a smoking ha

[Hypersensitivity to iodinated contrast media: Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Position Statement of the Drug Allergy Committee of the Mexican College of Clinical Immunology and Allergy].

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity reactions to iodinated contrast media represent a relevant clinical issue due to their increasing use in radiodiagnostic procedures. These reactions are classified as immediate or non-immediate, immunological and non-immunological, with variable prevalence and potentially serious consequences such as anaphylaxis or severe cutaneous adverse reactions. Identifying risk factors, classification, and immunological mechanisms of iodinated contrast media enables the development of effective prevention and management strategies. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the chemical characte

Impact of physiological media on acute myeloid leukemia bioenergetics and cell proliferation.

Increasing emphasis has been placed on improving the physiological relevance of cell culture media with formulations such as Human Plasma-Like Medium (HPLM). Given that shifts in mitochondrial metabolism and nutrient use are emerging as anti-cancer targets, the present study sought to investigate the impact of culture media formulation on mitochondrial bioenergetics and cancer cell growth. To do this, we used acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells and compared acute and chronic effects of HPLM versus different supraphysiological medias. The AML mitochondrial phenotype was largely unaffected by exp

Human esophageal myofibroblasts increase squamous epithelial thickness via paracrine mechanisms in an in vitro model of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

The pathogenesis of esophageal injury in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is incompletely understood. We modeled exposure of human esophageal myofibroblasts (HEMFs) to gastroesophageal reflux by repeated treatment with pH 4.5 and pH 4.5 bile salts and determined the effects on the epithelium in a 3D organotypic-like air-liquid interface model. Total, basal and supra-basal thickness of the epithelium were measured and immunostaining for p63, for basal (CK 14) and supra-basal (CK 4) squamous differentiation markers, and for cell proliferation (PCNA) were performed. A model for secondary traumatic stress following workplace exposure to traumatic material in analytical staff.

Analytical professionals working in criminal justice and in social media companies are exposed to aversive details of traumatic events. Albeit indirect, exposure in these roles is repeated and can be extreme, including exposure to material containing lethal violence, sexual assault, and serious self-harm, leading to post-traumatic stress disorder and Secondary Traumatic Stress reactions. Incorporating relevant empirical research, this article considers the mechanisms that may contribute to post-exposure post-traumatic stress disorder and Secondary Traumatic Stress reactions in these roles. New insights into nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.

Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is a new disorder reported almost exclusively in patients who have renal insufficiency and are exposed to contrast media formulated with gadolinium. High morbidity and mortality are associated with this severely disabling and painful condition. The acute phase begins upon exposure to gadolinium contrast media, characterized by a systemic inflammatory response involving iron mobilization, and then as a progressive, chronic phase in which fibrosis develops. Proposed is a unifying model of cumulative risk factors in which the interplay of systemic inflammation and st

Concurrent influenza vaccination reduces anti-FVIII antibody responses in murine hemophilia A.

Inflammatory signals such as pathogen- and danger-associated molecular patterns have been hypothesized as risk factors for the initiation of the anti-factor VIII (FVIII) immune response seen in 25% to 30% of patients with severe hemophilia A (HA). In these young patients, vaccines may be coincidentally administered in close proximity with initial exposure to FVIII, thereby providing a source of such stimuli. Here, we investigated the effects of 3 vaccines commonly used in pediatric patients on FVIII immunogenicity in a humanized HA murine model with variable tolerance to recombinant human FVII
