BACKGROUND: Safer-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic altered the structure of clinical care for Huntington's disease (HD) patients. This shift provided an opportunity to identify limitations in the current healthcare infrastructure and how these may impact the health and well-being of persons with HD.
OBJECTIVE: The study objectives were to assess the feasibility of remote healthcare delivery in HD patients, to identify socioeconomic factors which may explain differences in feasibility and to evaluate the impact of safer-at-home orders on HD patient stress levels.
METHODS: This obse

BACKGROUND: Uninsured people who use drugs (PWUD) require extended parenteral antibiotic therapy when diagnosed with complex infections such as osteomyelitis. They are ineligible to enroll in our self-administered outpatient antimicrobial therapy (S-OPAT) program and instead sent to a skilled nursing facility (SNF). We aim to retrospectively assess clinical outcomes of PWUD discharged from our safety net hospital to complete OPAT in an SNF.
METHODS: Using our hospital electronic medical record, PWUD discharged to an SNF for extended antibiotic therapy were identified for the study period, 1/1

Introduction and objectives: Acute abdominal pain (AAP) is one of the most common complaints in the emergency department (ED). Rapid diagnosis is essential and is often achieved through imaging. Computed tomography (CT) is widely considered an exemplary test in the diagnosis of AAP in adult patients. As previous studies show disparities in healthcare treatment based on insurance status, our objective was to assess the association between insurance status and frequency of CT ordered for adult patients presenting to the ED with AAP from 2005 to 2014. Methods: This study used the National Hospita

Little qualitative research has been conducted with cervical cancer survivors. We sought to understand the experiences of survivors in rural Eastern North Carolina and identify any barriers which may have kept women from receiving preventive Papanicolaou screenings or follow-up care. We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 15 low-income and underserved cervical cancer survivors living in Eastern North Carolina. Participants included English-speaking women who attended a large cancer center for care between March 2012 and March 2013. Participants ranged from being recently diagnos

PURPOSE: African Americans have the highest cancer mortality rates and poorest survival and are more often uninsured and underinsured compared with other ethnic groups. Minority participation in clinical trials has traditionally been low, with reports ranging from 3% to 20%. The present study systematically assesses 235 consecutively diagnosed African American cancer patients regarding recruitment onto cancer treatment clinical trials at Howard University Cancer Center between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2002. Our intent is to determine the rate-limiting factors associated with enrolling

Blacks and women are less likely to undergo invasive cardiac procedures than whites and men in patients with chronic renal disease. We determined the relationship between ethnic and sex differences in access to cardiac procedures as patients progress to ESRD and acquire Medicare insurance. We performed a cohort study of a nationwide random sample of 4,987 patients who progressed to ESRD in 1986 to 1987 and were followed up for 7 years was used. Data were collected from medical charts and Medicare administrative records. Pre-ESRD, the odds of cardiac procedure use were much lower for white wome
