Effects of home-based exercise with or without cognitive training on cognition and mobility in cardiac patients: A randomized clinical trial.

This randomized controlled trial compared the effects of home-based exercise, with or without cognitive training, on cognition and physical function in individuals aged 50 years and older with stable CVD during the COVID-19 pandemic. 122 patients (67.3 ± 7.9 years, 71% men) with stable CVD (77% coronary heart disease) were randomly assigned (1:1) to (1) Home-based physical exercise alone, or (2) Home-based physical exercise combined with cognitive training. Cognition (executive functions (primary outcome), processing speed, episodic memory, and working memory) and physical functions were asses

Longitudinal clinical and neuroanatomical correlates of memory impairment in motor neuron disease.

Memory impairment in motor neuron disease (MND) is still an underrecognized feature and has traditionally been attributed to executive dysfunction. Here, we investigate the rate of memory impairment in a longitudinal cohort of MND patients, its relationship to other cognitive functions and the underlying neuroanatomical correlates. 142 patients with MND and 99 healthy controls (HC) underwent comprehensive neuropsychological testing and structural MRI at 3T up to four times over a period of 18 months. Linear-mixed effects models were fitted to identify changes at baseline and over time in episo

Left frontal cortex connectivity underlies cognitive reserve in prodromal Alzheimer disease.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether higher global functional connectivity of the left frontal cortex (LFC) in Alzheimer disease (AD) is associated with more years of education (a proxy of cognitive reserve [CR]) and mitigates the association between AD-related fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET hypometabolism and episodic memory. METHODS: Forty-four amyloid-PET-positive patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI-Aβ+) and 24 amyloid-PET-negative healthy controls (HC) were included. Voxel-based linear regression analyses were used to test the association between years of education and FDG-PET in MC

Midlife insulin resistance and brain beta-amyloid accumulation as predictors of change in late-life cognitive function - A 20-year follow-up study.

The number of people with dementia will increase as populations age. Insulin resistance (IR) is associated with cognitive decline and dementia. We studied in this longitudinal, population-based cohort study, if change in late-life cognitive function during 5-year follow-up would be predicted by midlife IR (measured 15 years before the first late-life visit) or by late-life brain beta-amyloid (Aβ) accumulation or longitudinal change in late-life Aβ accumulation. Participants (n = 43) were recruited from the population-based Finnish Health 2000 study according to their homeostatic model assessme

Autobiographical Memory Fluency Reductions in Cognitively Unimpaired Middle-Aged and Older Adults at Increased Risk for Alzheimer's Disease Dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Recent research has revealed that cognitively unimpaired older adults who are at higher risk for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia often exhibit subtle cognitive alterations in their neuropsychological profiles. Emerging evidence suggests that autobiographical memory, which is memory for personal events and knowledge, may be sensitive to early AD-related cognitive alterations. In the present study, we investigated whether the rapid generation of autobiographical memory category exemplars, a retrieval process that taxes the neural network that is vulnerable to early AD, is

The space for memory in posterior parietal cortex: Re-analyses of bottom-up attention data.

The ventral (VPC) and dorsal sectors of the posterior parietal cortex are long known to mediate bottom-up and top-down attention to the external space. Because these regions also are implicated in retrieval of episodic memories, we proposed they also mediate attention to the internal (memory) space. One objection to this Attention to Memory hypothesis is that parietal regions involved in directing attention to percepts and memory are spatially adjacent but not overlapping, suggesting that different neural mechanisms are involved in each. This misalignment is most pronounced in VPC. Here, we re

The case of K.C.: contributions of a memory-impaired person to memory theory.

K.C. has been investigated extensively over some 20 years since a motorcycle accident left him with widespread brain damage that includes large bilateral hippocampal lesions, which caused a remarkable case of memory impairment. On standard testing, K.C.'s anterograde amnesia is as severe as that of any other case reported in the literature, including H.M. However, his ability to make use of knowledge and experiences from the time before his accident shows a sharp dissociation between semantic and episodic memory. A good deal of his general knowledge of the world, including knowledge about hims

Context reinstatement reveals preserved context memory specificity in typical ageing.

Episodic memory specificity declines with healthy ageing, as reflected in older adults' impaired ability to discriminate between similar focal stimuli. Yet, little is known about how ageing alters specificity of contextual memory features. Context reinstatement studies showed that young adults incidentally encode task-irrelevant contextual features with a high degree of specificity: focal objects are more frequently judged old when shown with studied backgrounds than with slightly altered lure backgrounds. In this registered report, we investigated the effect of context reinstatement with same

What Explains the Link Between Hearing and Vision Impairment and Cognitive Function? Analysis of Mediating Effects in the USA, England and Ireland.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing and vision impairments are associated with cognitive decline and dementia risk. Explanations for this include age-related processes impacting on sensory and cognitive function (common cause), or sensory impairments having a direct or indirect impact on cognition via social engagement, depression and physical activity (cascade). We tested whether associations between hearing, vision and episodic memory were mediated by allostatic load, social engagement, depression and physical activity. METHODS: We used structural equation modelling with cross-sectional data from the USA (

Cognitive Health After Cerebellar Stroke: Potential Link Between Socio-Educational Status and Memory Outcome.

While deficits in episodic memory have been noted following cerebellar damage, there is a lack of research systematically exploring the socio-demographic and cognitive profiles of patients with such impairments. This study aimed to differentiate between chronic-phase cerebellar stroke patients with and without verbal episodic memory deficits, and to determine whether those with deficits exhibit distinct socio-demographic and clinical profiles, thereby identifying potential factors associated with these impairments. Data from 15 cerebellar stroke patients in the CEREBEMO cohort were analyzed, w

Normal and Abnormal Sharp Wave Ripples in the Hippocampal-Entorhinal Cortex System: Implications for Memory Consolidation, Alzheimer's Disease, and Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

The appearance of hippocampal sharp wave ripples (SWRs) is an electrophysiological biomarker for episodic memory encoding and behavioral planning. Disturbed SWRs are considered a sign of neural network dysfunction that may provide insights into the structural connectivity changes associated with cognitive impairment in early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). SWRs originating from hippocampus have been extensively studied during spatial navigation in rodents, and more recent studies have investigated SWRs in the hippocampal-entorhinal cortex (HPC-EC) system during

Disruptions in white matter microstructure associated with impaired visual associative memory in schizophrenia-spectrum illness.

Episodic memory ability relies on hippocampal-prefrontal connectivity. However, few studies have examined relationships between memory performance and white matter (WM) microstructure in hippocampal-prefrontal pathways in schizophrenia-spectrum disorder (SSDs). Here, we investigated these relationships in individuals with first-episode psychosis (FEP) and chronic schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (SSDs) using tractography analysis designed to interrogate the microstructure of WM tracts in the hippocampal-prefrontal pathway. Measures of WM microstructure (fractional anisotropy [FA], radial diffu

Effects of instructed eye closure, retrieval strategy and dynamic visual noise on autobiographical memory specificity and quality.

Closing one's eyes during retrieval has been shown to enhance cognitive performance, especially on tests of episodic memory including eye-witness events and memory for word and picture lists. This paper examines the effects of eye-closure and cue-type on the recall of episodic autobiographical memory to assess whether eye-closure will be more beneficial for memories recalled by generative (vs. direct) retrieval strategies. Eye-closure was manipulated by experimental instructions and compared to an eyes-open condition and one with perceptual interference produced by dynamic visual noise. Direct

Intrinsic medial temporal lobe connectivity relates to individual differences in episodic autobiographical remembering.

People vary in how they remember the past: some recall richly detailed episodes; others more readily access the semantic features of events. The neural correlates of such trait-like differences in episodic and semantic remembering are unknown. We found that self-reported individual differences in how one recalls the past were related to predictable intrinsic connectivity patterns of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) memory system. A pattern of MTL connectivity to posterior brain regions supporting visual-perceptual processing (occipital/parietal cortices) was related to the endorsement of episodi

Transdiagnostic and transtherapeutic strategies for optimising autobiographical memory.

Our memories for past personally experienced autobiographical events play an important role in therapy, irrespective of presenting issue, diagnoses or therapeutic modality. Here, we summarise evidence for how autobiographical memory abilities can influence our mental health and the relevance of this for the treatment of mental health problems. We then guide the reader through principles and strategies for optimising autobiographical memory within treatment. We ground these recommendations within research for stand-alone interventions for improving autobiographical memory and from studies of ho

Investigating the appraisal structure of spontaneous thoughts: evidence for differences among unexpected thought, involuntary autobiographical memories, and ruminative thought.

Involuntary thinking occurs when mental states arise without intention. Such thoughts can take different forms, such as involuntary autobiographical memories (IAM), ruminative thoughts, and unexpected thoughts-all of which are popular areas of study, albeit in somewhat disparate literatures. Despite these mental states sharing a common thread of feeling involuntary in nature, it is nevertheless unclear what separates them phenomenologically. We conducted a set of exploratory and confirmatory experiments to elucidate the appraisal dimensions behind these forms of involuntary thought, with a par

Locomotor action sequences impact the scale of representation in hippocampus and posterior parietal cortex.

The hippocampus and posterior parietal cortex are implicated in both episodic memory and encoding of position in an environment. In the present study, we examine the impact of locomotor behaviors associated with movement in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions on population activity patterns in these two brain structures. We utilized a five-looped, squared spiral track containing stair segments, ramp segments, and flat segments. In addition to encoding locations along the full route, posterior parietal cortex population activity demonstrates strong pattern recurrence for similar action

Development of a Structured Interview to Explore Interpersonal Schema of Older Adults Living Alone Based on Autobiographical Memory.

With a growing public interest in the social health of older adults, studies focusing on social networks and interpersonal relationships of older adults are needed. The present study was conducted to develop a structured interview to evaluate the interpersonal schema based on Self-Defining Memory of older adults. First, the word cues that the older adults often report on interpersonal events were confirmed. Next, the indices and scoring rules were prepared, including Relationship frequency (RF), Conflict frequency (CF), Dominance mean (Dm), and Warmth mean (Wm). Healthy older adults living alo

Forgetting as a consequence of retrieval suppression: A meta-analytic review.

Suppressing retrieval of a memory when faced with a reminder has been shown to reduce the probability of that memory coming to mind in the future, a phenomenon known as suppression-induced forgetting (SIF). However, efforts to observe SIF have sometimes failed, leading some to question the robustness of the effect. To address this issue, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of SIF within the think/no-think paradigm including several key methodological variants to the original design. Across 500 effects from 120 studies, we observed a consistent aggregate SIF effect (d ≈ 0.20-0.40) measur

The neutral past: emotional (dys)regulation of autobiographical memory in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia.

BACKGROUND: While affective disturbances are a key symptomatic indicator of behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), little is known about how patients process the emotional load of their autobiographical (i.e. personal) memories. METHODS: We assessed the interplay of emotional regulation and autobiographical memory by inviting 18 bvFTD and 20 control participants to remember past personal events. For each memory, participants rated its emotional valence "then" (i.e. when the event has occurred) vs "now" (i.e. when retrieving the event). RESULTS: Patients with bvFTD described the
