BACKGROUND: To determine whether oral norethindrone acetate is superior to combined oral contraceptives (OCP) in delaying menstruation and preventing breakthrough bleeding when started late in the cycle.
METHODS: This article comprises of a case control study followed by a pilot randomized controlled study. In the first study, four women who presented late in their cycle and desired avoiding vaginal bleeding within 10 days before a wedding were started on norethindrone 5 mg three times daily and compared to age matched controls started on OCPs. Subsequently, a randomized controlled pilot stud

Exacerbation of certain medical conditions during specific phases of the menstrual cycle has long been recognized. Mechanisms of the cyclic variations are poorly understood, but are often attributed to fluctuations in reproductive hormones. We hypothesize that normal variations in autonomic balance during the menstrual cycle, which likely evolved as adaptations for reproduction, may contribute to catamenial variations in diseases independent of hormonal variations. Emerging evidence suggests that autonomic balance shifts towards sympathetic bias during the second half of the menstrual cycle. T

Idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) is an aggressive form of temporomandibular joint disease that most frequently presents in adolescent girls during the pubertal growth spurt. Although numerous studies have indicated that the etiopathogenesis of ICR may be related to estrogen deficiency, the decisive role of estrogens remains controversial, and other sex hormone disturbances have not yet been investigated in this regard. Therefore, the aim of this study was to ascertain the role of serum estrogen levels and also the roles of other sex hormones in the pathogenesis of ICR. Ninety-four ICR pati

The impact of monthly menstruation may range from a minor inconvenience for some women to a major health concern for those who suffer from menstrual disorders and health conditions that are aggravated during their menstrual cycle. Oral contraceptives (OCs) have been used safely in continuous regimens for the treatment of menstrual disorders in some women and for others who choose to extend their 28-day menstrual cycle to accommodate major life events. There is no physiological requirement for the monthly hormone withdrawal bleed that is experienced by women taking cyclic OCs or for a menstrual

The adult premenopausal ovary exists in a dynamic state of flux, with ovarian position, size, activity, and structure constantly undergoing changes. Pelvic sonograms must be interpreted with knowledge of the stage of the menstrual cycle and the expected normal range of sonographic findings, because features that are normal in one phase may be abnormal in another. Only against this background knowledge can the challenging task of interpretation of pelvic sonograms be successfully performed. US also plays an increasingly important role in monitoring ovulation induction and alternative methods of

INTRODUCTION: Menstruation-related symptoms affect a significant proportion of women of reproductive age. In addition to biological factors, psychological and social influences also play a role in the development and experience of these symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to examine the associations between menstrual symptoms, menstrual distress and various biopsychosocial factors, with particular focus on negative affect, somatosensory amplification, age, age at menarche, and the presence of gynecological or endocrinological conditions.
METHOD: Our online survey was conducted betw

AIM: The impact of the Kahramanmaraş earthquake on the menstrual cycles of surviving women was investigated in this research.
METHODS: The study included 233 single women aged 15-49 affected by the earthquake. An online questionnaire that was created on Google Forms and whose link was sent to the women via the WhatsApp application was used to collect the data. This questionnaire included a descriptive information form, the impact of event scale (IES), and the Visual Analog Scale.
RESULTS: The duration of women's menstrual bleeding decreased following the earthquake, their menstrual cycles be

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Imperforate hymen (IH) is a rare congenital anomaly that results in vaginal outlet obstruction. IH can cause significant morbidity if not managed appropriately, which depends on accurate identification of the condition. However, data on the accuracy of IH diagnosis is limited. This study aimed to investigate the accuracy of IH diagnosis at a single referral center.
METHODS: Institutional Review Board approval was obtained for this retrospective chart review. ICD-10 codes identified patients with "hymenal abnormalities" between 2018 and 2023 at a single children's hospital. Th

Endogenous Cushing's syndrome (CS) is rare, with an incidence of 0.7-2.4 per million population per year according to population-based studies. However, evaluation of patients presenting disorders potentially related to cortisol excess, and therefore with a 'high risk of clinical suspicion' profile, could bring out several unrecognized cases. CS represents one of the most challenging endocrine diseases, with clinical features overlapping with those of common conditions affecting general population, invariably resulting in potential mis- or delayed diagnosis with negative consequences in terms

OBJECTIVE: Incomplete healing after cesarean section (CS) can result in isthmocele formation. When suturing the uterus, fully folding the wound lips may embed the endometrial layer into the myometrium, leading to isthmocele development. Hence, this study aimed to compare the effects of endometrial and non-endometrial suturing on isthmocele development.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This randomized controlled trial included 274 patients. Women who underwent primary CS were randomly allocated to one of the two study groups: endometrial suturing and non-endometrial suturing. The primary outcome was isth

PURPOSE: To evaluate clinical characteristics, quality of life (QoL) and effectiveness in patients with menstrual cycle disorders (MCDs) including abnormal uterine bleeding, dysmenorrhea and mastodynia/mastalgia related to premenstrual syndrome taking the Vitex agnus-castus (VAC) products Cyclodynon® or Mastodynon® in a real-world setting.
METHODS: A single-center retrospective longitudinal cohort study (3 ± 1 months), using data obtained from healthcare data archive and telephone interviews. The main study variables were changes in bleeding, menstrual pain, breast tenderness and patients' Qo

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine-gynecologic disorder affecting women of childbearing age. It has a wide range of clinical manifestations, including menstrual irregularity, infertility, hirsutism, acne, and obesity. Studies have confirmed that PCOS can significantly reduce a patient's health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The pathophysiology of PCOS is poorly understood, but it is believed to be caused by the interaction of several factors. Moreover, there is a lack of information about HRQoL among PCOS women in Saudi Arabia. This study aims to assess

Menstruation is a natural phenomenon for every female, starting from adolescents to menopausal age. Any disturbances in menstrual patterns can eventually affect one's physical as well as psychological health which in turn hamper the quality of life of women. Several factors including genetic predisposition as well as lifestyle modifications adversely affect normal menstrual patterns. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the prevalence of menstrual disorders among adolescents and young women as well as the associated risk factors. A cross-sectional random survey was conducted from January 2020 to

STUDY QUESTION: Does maternal polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) affect the timing of pubertal development in daughters and sons?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Maternal PCOS was associated with earlier adrenarche in daughters.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Female adolescents with PCOS often experience earlier adrenarche compared to adolescents without PCOS, due to hyperandrogenism. Likewise, they usually have hyperandrogenism during pregnancy, which might potentially affect the development of the foetus, including its future reproductive health.
STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: In this population-based cohort stud
