Study of the performance of resident surgeon-in-training during distal fibula lateral plate placement according to 2 learning methods: naive practice versus deliberate practice.

INTRODUCTION: Historically, surgical training has been primarily carried out in the operating theatre, using mentoring for the surgical resident to reach the appropriate skill level (3/5). Other surgical training methods also improve performance, but do not always lead to the highest level of expertise (5/5). Another training method, sometimes termed- deliberate practice, by setting objectives based on feedback, may be more effective. In this study we compared resident learning of osteosynthesis for a fibular fracture model between deliberate practice and traditional teaching or naive practice…

Structured coaching as a means to improve sonographic visualization of the appendix: a quality improvement initiative.

PURPOSE: Ultrasound of the right lower quadrant for appendicitis requires specific training and practice. Improved visualization of the appendix can result in decreased utilization of computed tomography. Increasing the sensitivity of ultrasound for appendicitis thus decreases radiation exposure, reduces cost, and improves the patient healthcare experience in accordance with the three principles of the triple aim designated by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a structured training program supplemented by technologist feedback on s

Setting the research agenda: involving parents in research on children who are HIV-free.

INTRODUCTION: There is growing interest in health, developmental and survival outcomes of children who are born HIV-free to women living with HIV (children born HIV-free). To date, the research agenda has been largely determined by researchers, funders and policy makers, with limited involvement of parents, who are key stakeholders. Researchers at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in partnership with community-based organisation 4M Network of Mentor Mothers conducted two workshops with parents in March 2022 to establish research priorities for children born HIV-free, and key co

A Qualitative Study of Participant Perceptions of a Cancer Research Education Program.

Kentucky ranks first in the nation in cancer incidence and mortality rates, with the greatest burden of disease being in the Appalachian region. The cancer disparities in the Appalachian region of the state are tied to high poverty rates, low education attainment, low health care access, and high rates of poor health behaviors, such as tobacco use. The University of Kentucky (UK) Markey Cancer Center (MCC) developed the Appalachian Career Training in Oncology (ACTION) program to address the cancer and education disparities in the region. ACTION is a two-year program that focuses on cancer educ

A Retrospective Analysis of Therapists' Coaching Behavior When Directing Parents to Conduct Behavioral Assessments and Treatments Via Telehealth.

Research on the delivery of behavioral assessment and treatment via telehealth has focused largely on child outcomes and parent procedural fidelity. By contrast, the behavior of the therapists coaching parents to conduct assessment and treatment has garnered little research consideration. In this study, we conducted a retrospective analysis of behavior therapists' coaching behaviors when directing parents to conduct functional analysis (FA) and functional communication training (FCT) with their young children with autism via telehealth. Coaching behaviors for five experienced behavior therapis

Use of coaching and technology to improve blood pressure control in Black women with hypertension: Pilot randomized controlled trial study.

Hypertension is the main cause of cardiovascular disease, especially in women. Black women (58%) are affected by higher rates of hypertension than other racial/ethnic groups contributing to increased cardio-metabolic disorders. To decrease blood pressure (BP) in this population, a pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted to examine the effects of Interactive Technology Enhanced Coaching (ITEC) versus Interactive Technology (IT) alone in achieving BP control, adherence to antihypertensive medication, and adherence to lifestyle modifications among Black women diagnosed with and receiving

'Healthy gums do matter': A case study of clinical leadership within primary dental care.

The Health and Social Care Act 2012 heralded wide reaching reforms intended to place clinicians at the heart of the health service. For NHS general dental practice, the conduits for this clinical leadership are the NHS England local professional networks. In Greater Manchester, the local professional network has developed and piloted a clinician led quality improvement project: 'Healthy Gums DO Matter, a Practitioner's Toolkit'. Used as a case study, the project highlighted the following facilitators to clinical leadership in dentistry: supportive environment; mentoring and transformational le…

Fritz de Quervain, MD (1868-1940): stenosing tendovaginitis at the radial styloid process.

Fritz de Quervain was the first surgeon to describe and treat chronic stenosing tendovaginitis at the radial styloid process. The current management of this condition differs little from his initial description and as a result the condition now bears his name. He and his mentor, Nobel Prize winner Theodor Kocher, advanced the understanding and treatment of thyroid disease, especially subacute nonsuppurative thyroiditis, another condition to which his name is attached. He was a pioneer of surgical technology and author of books and articles read worldwide and is largely responsible for the intr
