One of the strategies of treating Parkinson's disease (PD) is the replacement of lost neurons in the substantia nigra with healthy dapamingergic cells. An 18-yr-old boy presented with extreme back pain as the result of multiple vertebral fractures. At age 16 he had developed a tumor of the mesencephalon. BACKGROUND: We compared the molecular phenotypes of central nervous system tumors arising in four different lines of transgenic mice (TGM) carrying the Simian virus 40 large T antigen driven by different promoters or enhancers. Two of the four lines developed primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) in the brain stem or pineal gland. This fact explains why an elective palsy of the oculomotor nerve is exceedingly uncommon in brainstem infarcts.
