Mature teratomas are the most common ovarian neoplasms, accounting for 40% to 50% of ovarian tumors, and are histologically defined by the presence of multiple lineages of mature differentiated cells derived from one or more of the 3 embryonic germ layers; ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. Neuroectodermal and neural crest differentiation can be observed in mature teratomas, but it is uncommon to find secondary tumors that arise from the neural crest lineage. Herein we report the uncommon finding of a ganglioneuroma arising in a mature cystic teratoma in a 26-yr-old woman.

Morphea, also known as localized scleroderma, is a rare fibrosing disorder of the skin and underlying tissues. Morphea is differentiated from systemic sclerosis based on the absence of sclerodactyly, Raynaud phenomenon, and nailfold capillary changes. Patients with morphea commonly have systemic symptoms, such as malaise, fatigue, arthralgias, and myalgias, as well as positive autoantibody serologies. However, involvement of morphea is almost uniformly limited to those tissues derived from the mesoderm. The underlying pathogenesis of morphea is incompletely understood at this time, but ultimat…

We report the second known case of Maffucci syndrome associated with an adrenal cortex tumor. Endocrine tumors have been reported in patients with multiple enchondromas, although the underlying mechanism of this combination is unknown. Maffucci syndrome is characterized by abnormalities of several mesodermal derivates. Therefore, routine evaluation for involvement of the adrenal cortex may be warranted to improve our knowledge of this syndrome and of its pathophysiology.

The authors present a case of an anorectal anomaly associated with caudal regression syndrome, sirenomelia (mermaid syndrome), and a spectrum of mesodermal axial dysplasia. It was treated with a colostomy, posterior sagittal anorectoplasty, and closure of the colostomy. The patient is now 7-years-old, with fecal and urinary continence. Comments are made regarding the clinical and surgical findings, the follow-up evaluation, and anorectal manometry in this rare case.

The Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome is a disturbance in the development of the mesodermal and ectodermal tissues occurring in utero. It is characterized by the clinical triad of unilateral soft tissue and bone hypertrophy, varicosities and hemangiomas. For dentists the orofacial manifestations of the syndrome are interesting: unilateral hypertrophy of the maxilla and mandible, mandibular joint and alveolar processes and tooth germs. In addition, the gingival margins are thickened, eruption is premature and there is marked facial asymmetry.

Two babies with sirenomelia are described. Case 1, one of twins, showed the full sirenomelia sequence in conjunction with atelencephaly and cebocephaly. Case 2 had malformations consistent with a diagnosis of the VATER association. Review of the literature indicates that the basic defect in sirenomelia and the VATER association lies in the formation and differentiation of mesodermal tissue and that sirenomelia, the VATER association, and monozygotic twinning show a complex etiological interrelationship.

A new large family, affected by O-P-D syndrome is reported. Nine members in four consecutive generations have been studied. Computerized tomography study of spine and skull showed abnormalities to be confined to mesodermal derivates, while nervous structures were normal. Transmission pattern may be X-linked with intermediate expression in the female or autosomal dominant with sex limitation of expression.

A patient with pulsating exophthalmos is presented. He had facial asymmetry, multiple cutaneous café-au-lait spots and a subcutaneous nodule, biopsy of which showed features consistent with neurofibromatosis. Radiographs of the orbit showed a deficiency of the superolateral orbital wall, a feature previously recognized as part of neurofibromatosis. This feature probably occurs as a result of mesodermal dysplasia. The differential diagnosis and management are discussed.

This paper describes five patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and intracranial aneurysms. Patients with MVP frequently have evidence of a more generalized disorder of connective tissue. An association of intracranial aneurysms and MVP could be related to mesodermal disturbances involving collagen and elastic tissue in the vasculature. Further study is needed to confirm this association and to elucidate the nature of any underlying connective tissue defect.

Paraneoplastic syndromes secondary to mesodermal tumors are relatively uncommon. In this report, we describe two unusual cases associated with soft-tissue sarcoma: a 69-year-old male who had a normochromic anemia, without apparent etiology, that resolved promptly after surgical resection of the primary tumor; and a 22-year-old female with hypercalcemia without evidence of bony destruction.

In the search to understand the etiology and pathogenesis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) some workers have focused on mechanisms initiated in embryonic life including a disturbance of bilateral (left-right or mirror-image) symmetry highly conserved in vertebrates. The normal external bilateral symmetry of vertebrates results from a default process involving mesodermal somites. The normal internal asymmetry of the heart, major blood vessels, lungs and gut with its glands is also highly conserved among vertebrates. It results from the breaking of the initial bilateral symmetry by a bin…

The most obvious segments of the vertebrate embryo are the trunk mesodermal somites which give rise to the segmented vertebral column and the skeletal muscles of the body. Mechanistic insights into vertebrate somitogenesis have recently been gained from observations of rhythmic expression of the avian hairy-related gene (c-hairy1) in chick presomitic mesoderm (PSM), suggesting the existence of a molecular clock linked to somite segmentation ([1]; reviewed in [2]). Here, we show that lunatic Fringe (IFng), a vertebrate homolog of the Drosophila Fringe gene, is also expressed rhythmically in PSM…

Gastrulation is a period of intense mitotic activity (particularly in the developing mesoderm) in mammalian embryos. This, together with other studies showing that alcohol suppresses rates of cell division, suggests that alcohol-induced deficiencies in gastrulating mesodermal cells (cells responsible for inducing and maintaining neuroepithel …

Focal dermal hypoplasia or Goltz syndrome is a rare clinical entity, usually presenting in early childhood as a mix of ectodermal and mesodermal anomalies. Previously reported cases have included skeletal lesions of the long bones, metacarpals, metatarsals and pelvis. We present a case with a vertebral lesion causing neurologic deficit. A discussion of the history of the syndrome is included as well as detailed histologic description.

Based on updated knowledge on genitourinary embryology and after analysing published cases of female urogenital malformations, including those deemed unclassifiable, the authors reviewed and updated their embryological-clinical classification of female genital tract malformations to include all cases with genital or genitourinary malformations. This classification includes: Class 1, abnormalities of the intermediate mesoderm, such as unilateral genitourinary agenesis or hypoplasia, and multiple mesodermal abnormalities; Class 2, mesonephric or Wolffian anomalies, including unilateral renal age…

Hyaline cartilage is archetypic for the appendicular skeleton and the vertebral column. It arises from pluirpotential mesenchymal ancestor cells that remain morphologically undifferentiated prior to a localized cell aggregation in specific regions destined to undergo chondrogenesis. The critical ultrastructural studies of limb bud mesenchymal differentiation prior to, during, and after aggregation were largely completed during the 1970s. These studies accurately and reproducibly described the changes in the cells and matrix with reference to the developmental stages of the embryonic chick and
