Generalized eruption accompanied by hepatitis in two Thai metal cleaners exposed to trichloroethylene.

Two female workers, aged 23 and 24, engaged in cleaning metal straps with trichloroethylene (TCE) in a watch manufacturing plant, experienced generalized eruption, mucosal lesion, fever and hepatitis. The first case suffered fulminant hepatitis and died from liver failure in two weeks after the first symptom appearance. The second case, whose onset of generalized eruption, mucosal lesion and hepatitis without jaundice was nine days after that of the first case, however, recovered in 2 wk. Because the result of working environment measurement suggested heavy exposure to TCE, we deemed that ther

Ultrafine beryllium number concentration as a possible metric for chronic beryllium disease risk.

Beryllium is a lightweight metal which causes a chronic granulomatous lung disease among workers who become sensitized to it. Recent research has shown a persistence of the disease despite efforts at control with mean exposures below the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) occupational exposure limit of 2 microg/m3. Results of our current research confirm a previous finding in certain plants that particle number concentrations are higher in areas where historical estimate of risk showed a high risk of disease despite relatively lower mass concentrations. By providing side-by-s

[Respiratory tract diseases caused by chemically irritating or toxic pollutants at the work site].

Update statistics of job-related diseases show there is still a high level in reported and also in recognised and financially compensated airway diseases caused by the action of chemically irritating or toxic substances during work. Most reported cases occur in the chemical and metal processing industries. Main triggering substances are said to be isocyanates, aerosols of pollutants produced during welding, cutting, casting or moulding (smoke), by solvents and hair dyes. Experiments prove that a variety of these noxious substances produce dose-dependent hypersensitivity of the bronchial system

Lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide particles may impair cognitive function via CTCF-associated suppression of NMDAR-dependent synaptogenesis.

Lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) is the predominant cathode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs); however, its occupational health risks remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we found that in occupationally NCM‑exposed workers, urinary levels of Li, Ni, Co, and Mn were negatively associated with Mini‑Cog test scores and positively associated with serum neurofilament light chain (NfL, as neuronal injury marker). In an intratracheal instillation rat model, NCM-exposed rats exhibited learning and memory deficits, neuronal injury, and reduced synaptic complexity. RNA‑seq

Sarcoidosis: An Occupational Disease?

Sarcoidosis is an important member of the family of granulomatous lung diseases. Since its recognition in the late 19th century, sarcoidosis has been thought of as a disease of unknown cause. Over the past 20 years, this paradigm has been shifting, more rapidly in the past 10 years. Epidemiologic studies, bolstered by case reports, have provided evidence of causal associations between occupational exposure to specific agents and sarcoidosis. Pathogenesis has been more clearly defined, including the role of gene-exposure interactions. The use of in vitro lymphocyte proliferation testing to dete

Evaluation of divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) (rs224589) polymorphism on blood lead levels of occupationally exposed individuals.

Lead (Pb) is an environmental and public health toxicant. It affects various organ systems of the body, thereby disrupting their normal functions. To date, several genes that are known to influence the mechanism of action of lead and toxicity have been studied. Among them, the iron transporter gene, SLC11A2 (Solute Carrier 11 group A member 2) which codes for the transmembrane protein, DMT1 (Divalent Metal Transporter 1) has shown to transport other metals including zinc, copper, and lead. We investigated the influence of DMT1 polymorphism (rs224589) on blood lead (Pb-B) levels. In the present

[Occupational interstitial lung diseases].

Pneumoconioses are induced by the inhalation of mineral or metallic dust. The incidence has decreased in the industrialized countries, but these diseases still exist. Diseases diagnosed nowadays may result from exposures that date back several decades. Besides, industry continuously creates new types of exposure and produces novel materials and alloys. Unusual exposures, sometimes in small workshops or in independent workers, may still cause severe diseases. In case of exposure to some metals, like beryllium, diseases may occur in susceptible subjects even at low levels of exposure. Medical an

Chemical exposures in the workplace: effect on breast cancer risk among women.

Occupational health nurses need to be aware of the current science on breast cancer risks in the workplace because they are risk communicators for employees and their families. Occupational health nurses can serve as advocates for necessary research ultimately leading to risk reduction and prevention strategies in the workplace. Current research suggests exposure to organic solvents, metals, acid mists, sterilizing agents (ethylene oxide), some pesticides, light at night (shift work), and tobacco smoke increases breast cancer risk among women in occupational settings. Animal cancer bioassays c

Relationship of byssinosis to the generation of oxygen radicals by bract tissues of cotton plants.

Byssinosis is a hazardous respiratory disorder of workers in natural fiber processing industries and, in the case of cotton, is caused by exposure to respirable dust generated from leafy trash associated with raw fibers. To understand the chemical characteristics of involucral trash components that might contribute to bysinosis, we examined the human airway constricting activity and oxygen radical generating activity of dry, frost-killed cotton bracts. In response to inhalation of aerosolized bract extracts, the expiratory flow rates of human volunteers at 40% of vital capacity during partial

Topochemistry of trace metals in nasal mucosa. Potentialities of some histochemical methods and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis.

Histochemical methods and energy dispersive X-ray micro-analysis (EDX-analysis) were evaluated in model experiments and on tissue sections for their usefulness in detecting traces of metals in biological tissue. The goal for this study was to establish a method for localization of nickel deposits in the nasal mucosa, where it has been found in concentrations between 1 and 40 microgram/g in nickel exposed individuals. The histochemical methods tested were staining with dimethylglyoxime, rubeanic acid and dithizone, the Turnbull and Prussian blue methods and TIMM'S sulphide silver procedure. In

Welding fume inhalation exposure and high-fat diet change lipid homeostasis in rat liver.

It is estimated that greater than 1 million workers are exposed to welding fume (WF) by inhalation daily. The potentially toxic metals found in WF are known to cause multiple adverse pulmonary and systemic effects, including cardiovascular disease, and these metals have also been shown to translocate to the liver. This occupational exposure combined with a high fat (HF) Western diet, which has been shown to cause hyperlipidemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has the potential to cause significant mixed exposure metabolic changes in the liver. The goal of this study was to use m

Cement Industry Pollution and Its Impact on the Environment and Population Health: A Review.

The cement industry, a foundation of global infrastructure development, significantly contributes to environmental pollution. Key sources of pollution include dust emissions; greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide; and the release of toxic substances such as heavy metals and particulate matter. These pollutants contribute to air, water, and soil degradation and are linked to severe health conditions in nearby populations, including respiratory disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and increased mortality rates. Noise pollution is also a significant issue, inducing auditory diseases that a

A comparison of cytotoxicity and oxidative stress from welding fumes generated with a new nickel-, copper-based consumable versus mild and stainless steel-based welding in RAW 264.7 mouse macrophages.

Welding processes that generate fumes containing toxic metals, such as hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni), have been implicated in lung injury, inflammation, and lung tumor promotion in animal models. While federal regulations have reduced permissible worker exposure limits to Cr(VI), this is not always practical considering that welders may work in confined spaces and exhaust ventilation may be ineffective. Thus, there has been a recent initiative to minimize the potentially hazardous components in welding materials by developing new consumables containing much less

When TAT fails: A case of generalized tetanus and reactive thrombocytosis.

Tetanus remains a life‑threatening infection caused by Clostridium tetani neurotoxin. We report a 59‑year‑old male construction worker who developed generalized tetanus 21 days after a rusty metal laceration, despite prior wound debridement and tetanus antitoxin (TAT) administration at a local hospital. He presented with mild trismus but rapidly progressed to generalized spasms, respiratory compromise, and autonomic instability. Early percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy combined with fibreoptic bronchoscopy for pulmonary toilet effectively secured the airway and prevented aspiration pneumon

Right main bronchus perforation detected by 3D-image.

A male metal worker, who has never smoked, contracted debilitating dyspnoea in 2003 which then deteriorated until 2007. Spirometry and chest x-rays provided no diagnosis. A 3D-image of the airways was reconstructed from a high-resolution CT (HRCT) in 2007, showing peribronchial air on the right side, mostly along the presegmental airways. After digital subtraction of the image of the peribronchial air, a hole on the cranial side of the right main bronchus was detected. The perforation could be identified at the re-examination of HRCTs in 2007 and 2009, but not in 2010 when it had possibly heal

Machinery-related deaths: relevance of workplace investigation and antemortem radiological data in reconstructing the fatality.

Machinery-related fatalities are one of the leading causes of traumatic occupational deaths. In our report, we present the case of a 40-year-old male who suffered a severe head trauma while working in a cut-foam industry and died despite an early craniectomy. The radiological reconstruction of the skull based on preoperative computed tomography scans disclosed a large depressed conical fracture of the left parietal bone. The 3D-reconstruction of the work area, combined with a fit-matching analysis between the machinery and the depressed skull fracture allowed us to conclude that the head was c
