The recovery of unconjugated bilirubin from human amniotic fluid was studied using dichloromethane, chloroform/isopropanol (3:1 vol/vol), and chloroform/ methanol (3:1 vol/vol) extraction of human amniotic fluid that had been supplemented with bilirubin at various concentrations. Xylitol was produced by Candida guilliermondii by fermentation of sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate. Undesirable impurities were extracted from the broth using either ethyl acetate, chloroform or dichloromethane. The best results on clarification of the broth without xylitol loss were obtained with ethyl acetate. When ethanol, acetone or tetrahydrofuran were used for precipitation of impurities, only tetrahydrofuran clarified the fermented broth, but a high xylitol loss (approximately 30%) was observed.

In this study a headspace spectrophotometric method is proposed for analysis of dichloromethane and isobutyl methyl keton (IBMK) residues in the ampicillin powder. Ampicillin is dissolved in 1 M NaOH in the vessel of an arsenic analyzer unit of an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. A simple and reliable spectrophotometric method for the determination of heparan sulfate is described. The method is based on the 1,9-dimethylmethylene blue assay for sulfated glycosaminoglycans. Addition of bovine serum albumin, together with a specific NaCl concentration and pH, results in a specific decrease of heparan sulfate-based absorbance.
