High-rate biological denitrification in the cyclic rotating-bed biological reactor: Effect of COD/NO3(-), nitrate concentration and salinity and the phylogenetic analysis of denitrifiers.

The effects of COD/NO3(-) ratio, nitrate concentration and salinity was tested on the performance of the CRBR in denitrification with catechol as carbon source. The maximum nitrate reduction attained at COD/NO3(-) ratio of 1. The CRBR operated at optimum COD/NO3(-) ratio could completely denitrify the nitrate at inlet concentration up to 1250mg/L without nitrite accumulation. The maximum denitrification rate in the CRBR was 3.56kgNO3(-)/m(3)d with a nitrate reduction efficiency of 99% when the bioreactor was operated at inlet nitrate loading rate of 3.6kgNO3(-)/m(3)d. The denitrification perfo

Functional characterization of IgA-targeted bacterial taxa from undernourished Malawian children that produce diet-dependent enteropathy.

To gain insights into the interrelationships among childhood undernutrition, the gut microbiota, and gut mucosal immune/barrier function, we purified bacterial strains targeted by immunoglobulin A (IgA) from the fecal microbiota of two cohorts of Malawian infants and children. IgA responses to several bacterial taxa, including Enterobacteriaceae, correlated with anthropometric measurements of nutritional status in longitudinal studies. The relationship between IgA responses and growth was further explained by enteropathogen burden. Gnotobiotic mouse recipients of an IgA(+) bacterial consortium

Soil fertilization leads to a decline in between-samples variability of microbial community δ13C profiles in a grassland fertilization experiment.

Gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) was used to measure the (13)C/(12)C ratios of PLFAs at natural abundance levels from a temperate grassland nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) factorial fertilization experiment in northern Greece. In each plot two rhizosphere samples were derived centred around individual Agrostis capillaris and Prunella vulgaris plants. It was hypothesized that the isotopic signal of microbes that preferentially feed on recalcitrant litter such as fungi would be modified by fertilization more strongly than that of opportunistic microbes us

Cultivation-independent identification of candidate dehalorespiring bacteria in tetrachloroethylene degradation.

Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is one of the major pollutants and is degraded by dissimilation by dehalorespiring bacteria. The dehalorespiring bacteria are anaerobic, and most cannot be cultured by conventional agar plating methods. Therefore, to identify the dehalorespiring bacteria that dissimilatively degrade PCE, a cultivation-independent method is required. To achieve accurate and detailed analysis of the bacteria, we developed a novel stable isotope probing (SIP) method. This technique involves 2 steps, namely, a labeling step, in which a labeled carbon source is incorporated into the sample

Multidrug Resistance in Quinolone-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacteria Isolated from Hospital Effluent and the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant.

This study is aimed to assess if hospital effluents represent an important supplier of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria that, being discharged in the municipal collector, may be disseminated in the environment and bypassed in water quality control systems. From a set of 101 non-Escherichia coli Gram-negative bacteria with reduced susceptibility to quinolones, was selected a group of isolates comprised by those with the highest indices of MDR (defined as nonsusceptibility to at least one agent in six or more antimicrobial categories, MDR ≥6) or resistance to meropenem or ceftazi

Open Waste Canals as Potential Sources of Antimicrobial Resistance Genes in Aerosols in Urban Kanpur, India.

Understanding the movement of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment is critical to managing their spread. To assess potential ARG transport through the air via urban bioaerosols in cities with poor sanitation, we quantified ARGs and a mobile integron (MI) in ambient air over periods spanning rainy and dry seasons in Kanpur, India (n = 53), where open wastewater canals (OWCs) are prevalent. Gene targets represented major antibiotic groups-tetracyclines (tetA), fluoroquinolines (qnrB), and beta-lactams (blaTEM)-and a class 1 mobile integron (intI1). Over half of air samples lo

Shifts in coastal sediment oxygenation cause pronounced changes in microbial community composition and associated metabolism.

BACKGROUND: A key characteristic of eutrophication in coastal seas is the expansion of hypoxic bottom waters, often referred to as 'dead zones'. One proposed remediation strategy for coastal dead zones in the Baltic Sea is to mix the water column using pump stations, circulating oxygenated water to the sea bottom. Although microbial metabolism in the sediment surface is recognized as key in regulating bulk chemical fluxes, it remains unknown how the microbial community and its metabolic processes are influenced by shifts in oxygen availability. Here, coastal Baltic Sea sediments sampled from o

Effects of plant downtime on the microbial community composition in the highly saline brine of a geothermal plant in the North German Basin.

The microbial biocenosis in highly saline fluids produced from the cold well of a deep geothermal heat store located in the North German Basin was characterized during regular plant operation and immediately after plant downtime phases. Genetic fingerprinting revealed the dominance of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and fermentative Halanaerobiaceae during regular plant operation, whereas after shutdown phases, sequences of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) were also detected. The detection of SOB indicated oxygen ingress into the well during the downtime phase. High 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and

Beyond bacteria: a study of the enteric microbial consortium in extremely low birth weight infants.

Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants have high morbidity and mortality, frequently due to invasive infections from bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The microbial communities present in the gastrointestinal tracts of preterm infants may serve as a reservoir for invasive organisms and remain poorly characterized. We used deep pyrosequencing to examine the gut-associated microbiome of 11 ELBW infants in the first postnatal month, with a first time determination of the eukaryote microbiota such as fungi and nematodes, including bacteria and viruses that have not been previously described. Multi-omic profiling a defined bacterial consortium for treatment of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection.

Donor-derived fecal microbiota treatments are efficacious in preventing recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI), but they have inherently variable quality attributes, are difficult to scale and harbor the risk of pathogen transfer. In contrast, VE303 is a defined consortium of eight purified, clonal bacterial strains developed for prevention of rCDI. In the phase 2 CONSORTIUM study, high-dose VE303 was well tolerated and reduced the odds of rCDI by more than 80% compared to placebo. VE303 organisms robustly colonized the gut in the high-dose group and were among the top taxa associ

Comparison of Removal Behavior of Two Biotrickling Filters under Transient Condition and Effect of pH on the Bacterial Communities.

Although biotrickling filters (BTFs) applied under acidic condition to remove H2S from waste gases have been reported, the removal behavior of the acidic BTF under transient condition which was normal in most industry processes, and corresponding bacterial community have not been thoroughly studied. In the present study, two BTFs were run under neutral (BTFn) and acidic (BTFa) conditions, respectively. The results revealed that the removal performance of BTFa under transient condition was superior to that of BTFn; the maximum H2S eliminating capacities (ECs) achieved by BTFa and BTFn were 489.

Flea-Associated Bacterial Communities across an Environmental Transect in a Plague-Endemic Region of Uganda.

The vast majority of human plague cases currently occur in sub-Saharan Africa. The primary route of transmission of Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, is via flea bites. Non-pathogenic flea-associated bacteria may interact with Y. pestis within fleas and it is important to understand what factors govern flea-associated bacterial assemblages. Six species of fleas were collected from nine rodent species from ten Ugandan villages between October 2010 and March 2011. A total of 660,345 16S rRNA gene DNA sequences were used to characterize bacterial communities of 332 individual fleas.

Assessment of ecofriendly carbon capture using Bacillus subtilis induced calcium carbonate precipitation with focus on applications mechanisms and cost efficiency.

This work focuses on exploiting the naturally occurring microbial calcium carbonate precipitation catalyzed by microbial consortia within lakes and oceans biogeochemistry for carbon dioxide removal from atmosphere. In this work, Bacillus subtilis OQ119616 was used for carbon dioxide sequestration in equi-molar concentrations into Bacillus-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (BICCP). As this process requires alkaline media, urea degradation by urease and nitrogen fixation were traced. BICCP has been formed from calcium salts in the following order: chloride > nitrate > acetate > citrate. Ho…

Halophilic plant growth-promoting bacterial consortium reshapes soil microbiota to enhance salinity tolerance, antioxidant defense, and yield in Vigna mungo L.

Soil salinity is a major abiotic stress that severely restricts crop productivity by disrupting ionic balance, inducing osmotic stress, and promoting oxidative damage. Black gram (Vigna mungo L.), an important pulse crop, is highly sensitive to salinity, resulting in reduced growth, physiological performance, and yield. The present study evaluated the efficacy of a compatible multi-strain HPGPB consortium comprising MKM3 (Halobacillus marinus), MKM4 (Halobacillus halophilus), and MKM11 (Halobacillus halophilus) in enhancing salinity tolerance in two black gram varieties (VBN8 and VBN11) under

Unravelling the effect of autochthonous scotta-derived vs. commercial starter cultures in pilot-scale hard sheep milk cheese production: A multi-omics and sensory combined approach.

Autochthonous whey-based (scotta-innesto) starters are increasingly recognized as a valuable resource to preserve microbial biodiversity and sensory identity in hard sheep milk cheeses produced under PDO-type specifications. In this study, two indigenous scotta-innesto cultures collected in Sardinia (Italy) in the 1960s were compared with a widely used commercial starter in pilot-scale hard sheep milk cheese manufacture produced according to Pecorino Romano PDO specifications. To this end, an integrated multidisciplinary approach was employed by combining starter metagenomics, culture-dependen
