We compared the susceptibilities of 100 Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates obtained from January to June 2000 to a variety of antimicrobial agents, including various cephems, with the susceptibilities of 55 isolates obtained from May to December 1995. In 11 of the 15 cephems tested, the MIC50 (minimum inhibitory concentration for 50% of isolates) ratios, calculated by dividing the MIC50 for isolates from 2000 by that for isolates from 1995, showed 4-fold to 16-fold differences. 9,10-Anthracenedione derivatives are known to exhibit a quite potent anticancer activity. It has also been reported that these compounds can be effectively employed in both antibacterial and antitrypanosomal therapy. Anthraquinones also exhibit some undesirable side effects, like cardiotoxicity. So many interactions seem to demonstrate that 9,10-anthracenediones strongly interact with a number of biological sites. In this paper we wish to report on the synthesis and the pharmaceutical activity of some newly synthesised derivatives containing the anthraquinone pharmacophore.

The natural susceptibility of 20 strains each of Brevibacterium casei (formerly CDC coryneform groups B-1 and B-3), Dermabacter hominis (formerly CDC coryneform groups 3 and 5), and Turicella otitidis (formerly coryneform group ANF-1-like) isolated from clinical specimens to 71 antibiotics was investigated. The minimal inhibitory concentration of the three most commonly used antifungal agents--ketoconazole, fluconazole and intraconazole against 28 strains of Malassezia furfur, was studied. A study was made of 366 feces for detection of extended spectrum beta-lactamases producing Enterobacteriaceae from feces. The selective agar was used for modified drigalski agar (Eiken Chemical Co., LTD) with 2 micrograms/ml cefotaxime (ESBL screen agar). 92 strains of Enterobacteriaceae, 41 Escherichia coli, 15 Citrobacter freundii, 13 Enterobacter cloacae, 11 Klebsiella pneumoniae, and other 12, were isolated from ESBL screen agar. Two inorganic tin compounds, as well as mono- and tri-substituted methyl-, butyl-, and phenyltins were examined for their interactions with a hydrocarbon-using strain of Candida maltosa. With reference to the traditional use of Cetraria islandica (Iceland moss) for relief of gastric and duodenal ulcer, plant extracts were screened for in vitro activity against Helicobacter pylori. (+)-Protolichesterinic acid, an aliphatic alpha-methylene-gamma-lactone, was identified as an active component. Fifty five strains of group F streptococci (GFS) isolated from clinical samples of 53 patients with diverse diseases, were characterised by a battery of physiological tests. Fluoroquinolones are the newest antibiotics for treatment of some infections caused by highly resistant bacteria (eg, Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Clinically sound indications for these drugs include resistant infections of the urinary, intestinal, and respiratory tracts; otitis externa; osteomyelitis; foot infections in diabetic patients; and late infections complicating burns. The sensitivity of 23 strains of Ureaplasma urealyticum to doxycycline was measured by a metabolism-inhibition technique.
