The role of microbiota in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most frequent liver disease worldwide. Gut microbiota can play a role in the pathogenesis of NAFLD since dysbiosis is associated with reduced bacterial diversity, altered Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, a relative abundance of alcohol-producing bacteria, or other specific genera. Changes can promote disrupted intestinal barrier and hyperpermeability, filtration of bacterial products, activation of the immune system, and pro-inflammatory changes in the intestine, in the liver, and at a systemic level. Microbiota-derived molecules can contribute to…

Role of Oral Microbiota in Carcinogenesis: A Short Review.

A strong and healthy microbiome is responsible for homeostasis between the host and microbiota which is necessary to achieve the normal functioning of the body. Dysbiosis provokes prevalence of pathogenic microbes, leading to alterations in gene expression profiles and metabolic processes. This in turn results in anomalous immune responses of the host. Dysbiosis may be associated with a wide variety of diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, allergic conditions, bronchitis, asthma, heart diseases and oncogenesis. Presently, the links between oral microbial consortia and their …

The microbiota-gut-brain axis in Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by an autosomal dominant trinucleotide (CAG) tandem repeat, resulting in complex motor, psychiatric and cognitive symptoms as well as gastrointestinal disturbances and other peripheral symptoms. There are currently no disease-modifying treatments, and the peripheral pathology of the disorder is not well understood. Emerging evidence suggests that the bi-directional communication pathways between the gut and the brain, including the microbiota-gut-brain axis, can affect motor, psychiatric and cognitive symptoms as well as we…

Features of gut microbiota in patients with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychological disorder, which is characterized by the misunderstanding of body image, food restriction, and low body weight. An increasing number of studies have reported that the pathophysiological mechanism of AN might be associated with the dysbiosis of gut microbiota. The purpose of our study was to explore the features of gut microbiota in patients with AN, hoping to provide valuable information on its pathogenesis and treatment. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, from August 2020 to June 2021, patients with AN who were admitted into Peking Uni…

Pesticide-induced disturbances of bee gut microbiotas.

Social bee gut microbiotas play key roles in host health and performance. Worryingly, a growing body of literature shows that pesticide exposure can disturb these microbiotas. Most studies examine changes in taxonomic composition in Western honey bee (Apis mellifera) gut microbiotas caused by insecticide exposure. Core bee gut microbiota taxa shift in abundance after exposure but are rarely eliminated, with declines in Bifidobacteriales and Lactobacillus near melliventris abundance being the most common shifts. Pesticide concentration, exposure duration, season and concurrent stressors all inf…

Characteristic alterations of gut microbiota in uncontrolled gout.

Microbiome research has been on the rise recently for a more in-depth understanding of gout. Meanwhile, there is a need to understand the gut microbiome related to uric acid-lowering drug resistance. In this study, 16S rRNA gene-based microbiota analysis was performed for a total of 65 stool samples from 17 healthy controls and 48 febuxostat-treated gout patients (including 28 controlled subjects with decreased uric acid levels and 20 uncontrolled subjects with non-reduced uric acid levels). Alpha diversity of bacterial community decreased in the healthy control, controlled, and uncontrolled g…

Disorders of gut microbiota in children with Tetralogy of Fallot.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota plays an important role in cardiovascular health and disease, including congenital heart disease (CHD). Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is the most common form of cyanotic CHD characterized by systemic chronic hypoxia and sustained pressure overload of the right ventricle. It is well-known that hypoxia and pressure overload can affect gut microbiota. However, the effects of TOF on the gut microbiota remain little understood. This study explored the profile of the gut microbiota in children with unrepaired TOF. METHODS: A total of 12 pediatric patients diagnosed with TOF a…

Kidney microbiota dysbiosis contributes to the development of hypertension.

Gut microbiota dysbiosis promotes metabolic syndromes (e.g., hypertension); however, the patterns that drive hypertensive pathology and could be targeted for therapeutic intervention are unclear. We hypothesized that gut microbes might translocate to the kidney to trigger hypertension. We aimed to uncover their method of colonization, and thereby how to maintain blood pressure homeostasis. Using combined approaches based on fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and immunofluorescence staining, electron microscopy analysis, bacterial cultures, species identification, and RNA-sequencing-base…

Alterations in the Gut Microbiota of Tibetan Patients With Echinococcosis.

There are two main types of echinococcosis, namely alveolar echinococcosis (AE) and cystic echinococcosis (CE). They are zoonotic parasitic diseases caused by the metacestodes of Echinococcus multilocularis and Echinococcus granulosus. In order to explore the gut microbiome composition of patients with echinococcosis, we analyzed fecal samples of seven patients with AE, six patients with CE, and 13 healthy individuals from the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China. Using metagenomic next-generation sequencing, we identified fecal bacteria in the patients with AE and CE. The gut microbiota was analyze…

Flaviviruses hijack the host microbiota to facilitate their transmission.

Flaviviruses, such as Dengue and Zika viruses, infect millions of people worldwide using mosquitos as vectors. In this issue of Cell, Zhang et al. reveal how these viruses manipulate the skin microbiome of infected hosts in a way that increases vector recruitment and viral spread. They propose vitamin A as a way to counteract the virus and decrease transmission.

Microbiota and Probiotics: The Role of Limosilactobacillus Reuteri in Diverticulitis.

The microbiota is the set of commensal microorganisms, residing in the organism, helping proper functioning of organs and systems. The role that the microbiota plays in maintaining the health of vertebrates is widely accepted, particularly in the gastrointestinal system, where it is fundamental for immunity, development, and conversion of nutrients. Dysbiosis is an alteration of the microbiota which refers to a disturbed balance, which can cause a number of pathologies. Probiotics have proven to be effective in modulating the microbiota of the gastrointestinal system and, therefore, in promoti…

The effect of gut microbiota on the intestinal lipidome of mice.

Gut microbiota significantly influence the plasma and liver lipidome. An interconnecting metabolite is acetate generated after degradation and fermentation of dietary fiber by the gut microbiota, which is metabolized in the liver into longer chain fatty acids and complex lipids reaching the circulation. Whether these systemic changes are accompanied by alternations of the intestinal lipidome is unclear. Therefore, we quantified glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids and sterols in ileum and colon, the two segments containing the highest densities of microbes in the gastrointestinal tract, of germ…

Vagotomy and insights into the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

The Microbiota-gut-brain axis describes the bidirectional communication between central nervous system and microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract. Increasing evidence has suggests that the vagus nerve, a major neural connection between the gut and brain, plays a key role in facilitating signaling along the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Much of this evidence has come from studies employing surgical subdiaphragmatic vagotomy. Here we provide a review of the use of vagotomy as a tool to explore the role of the vagus nerve in gut to brain signaling and the knowledge this approach has provided. …

Impact of Helicobacter pylori infection on gut microbiota.

A number of studies have revealed the association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and the gut microbiota. More than half of the investigations on the impact of H. pylori on the gut microbiota have been the sub-analyses of the influence of eradication therapy. It was observed that H. pylori eradication altered gut microbiota within a short period after eradication, and majority of the alterations took a long period of time to reverse back to the original. Changes in the gut microbiota within a short period after eradication may be attributed to antibiotics and proton pump inhi…

Characterization of biliary microbiota dysbiosis in extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

Extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) accounts for 3% of digestive cancers. The role of biliary microbiota as an environment-related modulator has been scarcely investigated in CCA, and the putative impact of associated diseases has not been yet assessed. We characterized the biliary microbiota in CCA patients in order to identify a specific CCA-related dysbiosis. The biliary effluents were collected through an endoscopic retrograde pancreatic cholangiography (ERCP) examination involving 28 CCA and 47 patients with gallstones, herein considered as controls. The biliary effluents were submitted…
