We studied 60 patients with allergic rhinitis (30 with seasonal and 30 with perennial rhinitis). Assessment of atopic status was based on medical history, physical examination, skin-prick testing, total IgE levels and nasal smears. Audiometry and tympanometry have been performed. Audiometric conductive hearing loss was found in 26.7% patients with perennial rhinitis and in 10% patients with seasonal rhinitis. Pressure equalization (PE) tube placement traditionally has been used to lessen conductive hearing loss with chronic middle ear effusion. It is assumed that the small diameter of the tube should not interfere with the conduction of sound. In this article we present 5 patients in whom placement of a PE tube resulted in significantly worse conductive hearing. Occlusion of the PE tube with cigarette paper or Gelfoam improved hearing, as documented with audiometry. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact and predictors of tympanostomy tube (TT) extrusion.
METHODS: A retrospective study on 258 ears underwent TT insertion during 2016-2018 at King Abdullah Specialized Children's Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Patients were followed for 36-48 months postoperatively to detect the recurrence rate. We have assessed children with perforations of the pars-tensa presenting to an otolaryngology clinic over a 7-year period. We found that over 70% of the perforations followed the insertion of a ventilation tube. Using a novel method of dividing the tympanic membrane into quadrants, we were able to assess the sites and grade the size of perforations. The most common site of involvement, in all perforations, was the antero-inferior quadrant.
