Profile of the Bioactive Compounds, Minerals, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties of Coloured Cherry Tomatoes at Different Stages of Ripeness.

Cherry tomatoes are recognised for their nutritional value and for being an important source of bioactive compounds. The aim was to evaluate the effect of ripening on the commercial quality, mineral composition, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of five differently coloured cherry tomato accessions. The bioactive compounds were quantified using rapid-resolution liquid chromatography, and antioxidant activity was measured by microplate spectrophotometry. The results showed significant differences among accessions and ripeness stages. Thus, the highest concentration

Enhancing concurrent production of volatile fatty acids and phosphorus minerals from waste activated sludge via magnesium ferrate pre-oxidation.

This study investigated the strategy of magnesium ferrate (MF) pre-oxidation to enhance acidogenic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS), targeting the simultaneous production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and phosphorus-minerals (struvite and vivianite). Results showed that such fermentation produced a high-value liquid within four days, achieving a peak VFA content of 241 ± 4 mg COD/ g VSfeed, ammonia nitrogen levels below 350 mg/L of and PO43-P under 3 mg/L. Further investigation revealed that the MF pre-oxidation raised the pH, enhanced key hydrolases activity, enriched acidogens a…

Natural iron-containing minerals catalyze the degradation of polypropylene microplastics: a route to self-remediation learnt from the environment.

Virgin and environmentally aged polypropylene (PP) micropowders (V-PP and E-PP, respectively) were used as reference microplastics (MPs) in … n of some types of MPs could be much faster than anticipated. Given the widespread presence of iron minerals (including the magnetite and iron-rich serpentine found in NS) in both coastal and mainland soils and sediments, a higher than expected resilience of the environment to the contamination by this class of pollutants is anticipated, and possible route …

Phytic acid inhibits Cr(VI) reduction on Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals: Changing reduction sites and electron transfer pathways.

The presence of organic phosphorus may influence the characteristics of Cr(VI) reduction and immobilization on Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals under anoxic conditions, as the organic phosphorus tends to bind strongly to clay minerals in soil. Herein, reduced nontronite (rNAu-2) was used to reduction of Cr(VI) in the presence of phytic acid (IHP) at neutral pH. With IHP concentration from 0 to 500 μM, Cr(VI) reduction decreased obviously (17.8%) within first 5 min, and then preferred to stagnate during 4-12 h (≥50 μM). After that, Cr(VI) was reduced continuously at a slightly faster rate. Density …

Sorption of cosmetic and personal care polymer ingredients to iron oxides, clay minerals and soil clays: An environmental perspective.

The increasing daily use of cosmetic and personal care ingredients (CPCIs) requires improved understanding of the fate and impacts of CPCIs in environmental systems. Effects of CPCIs on colloidal properties of various geocolloids such as iron oxides (goethite, haematite), clay minerals (kaolinite, bentonite) and soil clays (kaolinitic-, illitic- and lateritic soil clays) were studied by tracking time-resolved changes in zeta potential (ζ) and observing suspended particle density. Two polymers representing anionic CPCIs, i.e., polyacrylate crosspolymer-11 (PC11) and cationic CPCIs, i.e., polyDA…

Nano-scale minerals in-situ supporting CeO2 nanoparticles for off-on colorimetric detection of L-penicillamine and Cu2+ ion.

Realizing the high value-added utilization of cheap minerals in environmental catalysis has important practical significance. Herein, four nano-scale minerals, namely halloysite (Hal) nanotubes, palygorskite (Pal) nanorods, and montmorillonite (Mon) and hydrotalcite (LDH) nanosheets, were selected for in-situ supporting CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. Among various nanocomposites (NCs), CeO2/Pal behaves the highest peroxidase-like activity, attributing to larger surface area for uniformly dispersing CeO2 NPs and more exposed active oxygen vacancy (Ovac) defect…

Clay Minerals Affect the Solubility of Zn and Other Bivalent Cations in the Digestive Tract of Ruminants In Vitro.

Ruminants ingest large quantities of clay minerals along with inorganic soil constituents in roughages. The layered structure of clay minerals, however, may adsorb cations and may, thus, interfere with the ruminants' supply of essential trace metals, such as Zn, Mn, Cu, and Fe. As quantitative knowledge about interactions between clay ingestion and essential trace metal metabolism are largely lacking, this in vitro study focussed on the effect of clay on the solubility of dietary Zn and other bivalent trace metals in the digestive tract of ruminants. Therefore, buffered rumen fluid was used fo…

Iron(III) minerals and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) synergistically enhance bioreduction of hexavalent chromium by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1.

Bioreduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) to sparingly soluble trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) is a strategy for the remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated sites. However, its application is limited due to the slow bioreduction process. Here we explored the potential synergistic enhancement of iron(III) minerals (nontronite NAu-2, ferrihydrite, and goethite) and electron shuttle anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) on the bioreduction of Cr(VI) by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. AQDS alone increased the bioreduction rate of Cr(VI) by accelerating electron transfer from MR-1 to Cr(VI). Iron minerals al…

Removal of Chromium from Soils Cultivated with Maize (Zea Mays) After the Addition of Natural Minerals as Soil Amendments.

The efficiency of natural minerals, i.e. zeolite, bentonite and goethite, regarding the retention of chromium, from maize was examined. Specifically, 1.0 kg of soil, 1.0 g of soil amendment and either 50 mg L-1 Cr(III) or 1 mg L-1 Cr(VI) were added in plant pots. Then, seeds of maize were cultivated. Each treatment was repeated three times. The statistical results of the experiments were analyzed by LSD test. Cr(III) addition in soil has shown that zeolite was the only amendment that increased the dry weight. Zeolite and bentonite reduced significantly the total chromium in plants after the ad…

Geogenic Cr oxidation on the surface of mafic minerals and the hydrogeological conditions influencing hexavalent chromium concentrations in groundwater.

This study aims to specify the source minerals of geogenic chromium in soils and sediments and groundwater and to determine the favorable hydrogeological environment for high concentrations of Cr(VI) in groundwaters. For this reason, chromium origin and the relevant minerals were identified, the groundwater velocity was calculated and the concentrations of Cr(VI) in different aquifer types were determined. Geochemical and mineralogical analyses showed that chromium concentrations in soils and sediments range from 115 to 959 mg/kg and that serpentine prevails among the phyllosilicates. The high…

Use of silicate minerals for pH control during reductive dechlorination of chloroethenes in batch cultures of different microbial consortia.

In chloroethene-contaminated sites undergoing in situ bioremediation, groundwater acidification is a frequent problem in the source zone, and buffering strategies have to be implemented to maintain the pH in the neutral range. An alternative to conventional soluble buffers is silicate mineral particles as a long-term source of alkalinity. In previous studies, the buffering potentials of these minerals have been evaluated based on abiotic dissolution tests and geochemical modeling. In the present study, the buffering potentials of four silicate minerals (andradite, diopside, fayalite, and forst…
