Hair cortisol change at COVID-19 pandemic onset predicts burnout among health personnel.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has put chronic pressure on worldwide healthcare systems. While the literature regarding the prevalence of psychological distress and associated risk factors among healthcare workers facing COVID-19 has exploded, biological variables have been mostly overlooked. METHODS: 467 healthcare workers from Quebec, Canada, answered an electronic survey covering various risk factors and mental health outcomes three months after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Of them, 372 (80%) provided a hair sample, providing a history of cortisol secretion for the three months p

Working with HIV clinics to adopt addiction treatment using implementation facilitation (WHAT-IF?): Rationale and design for a hybrid type 3 effectiveness-implementation study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco, alcohol and opioid misuse are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality among people with HIV (PWH). Despite existence of evidence-based counseling and medications for addiction, these treatments are infrequently offered in HIV clinics. The Working with HIV clinics to adopt Addiction Treatment using Implementation Facilitation (WHAT-IF?) study was conducted to address this implementation challenge. The study's goals were to conduct a formative evaluation of barriers to and facilitators of implementing addiction treatment for PWH followed by an evaluation of the i

Organizational and activational androgens, lemur social play, and the ontogeny of female dominance.

The role of androgens in shaping "masculine" traits in males is a core focus in behavioral endocrinology, but relatively little is known about an androgenic role in female aggression and social dominance. In mammalian models of female dominance, including the ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta), links to androgens in adulthood are variable. We studied the development of ring-tailed lemurs to address the behavioral basis and ontogenetic mechanisms of female dominance. We measured behavior and serum androgen concentrations in 24 lemurs (8 males, 16 females) from infancy to early adulthood, and asses

A taxonomy of the scope and organization of local sexually transmitted disease services for policy and practice.

Local health departments (LHDs) and their organizational partners play a critical role in controlling sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the United States. We examine variation in the differentiation, integration, and concentration (DIC) of STD services and develop a taxonomy describing the scope and organization of local STD services. LHD STD programs (n = 115) in Alabama (AL) and California (CA) responded to surveys assessing STD services available in 2014. K-means cluster analysis identified LHD groupings based on DIC variation. Discriminant analysis validated cluster solutions. Differ

Patient and organizational characteristics predict a long length of stay in the emergency department - a Swedish cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Emergency departments (EDs) constitute a central part of the healthcare system that receives patients with complaints of varied urgency. A long length of stay (LOS) in the ED is associated with crowding, low patient satisfaction and poor patient outcomes. Therefore, it is important to understand the key drivers and patient characteristics associated with long LOS. AIMS: To identify patient-related and organization-related characteristics associated with the longest ED LOS. METHODS: All adult visits (n=19 503) to the ED at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, Sweden, between 8

Factors influencing PrEP adoption in sexual health clinics within Ontario's public health system: a qualitative study using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR).

INTRODUCTION: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) utilization in Ontario is concentrated in two large urban centers, resulting in geographic and structural inequities in access. Little is known about adoption in Public Health Sexual Health Clinics (PHSHCs) or the implementation factors influencing uneven uptake. This study aimed to: (1) assess the extent of PrEP adoption in PHSHCs; (2) identify barriers and facilitators affecting implementation; and (3) explore factors supporting successful and equitable PrEP implementation. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 staff and

Toxic leadership and nurses' vengeful behaviors: mediating effects of organizational citizenship behavior and moderating effects of self-efficacy: A predictive correlational study.

Toxic leadership represents a destructive phenomenon in healthcare settings that negatively affects nurses' well-being and may provoke vengeful behaviors. Identifying organizational mechanisms that mitigate these effects remains essential. This study aimed to examine the effect of toxic leadership on nurses' vengeful behaviors and to explore the mediating role of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and the moderating role of self-efficacy in this relationship. A predictive correlational design was conducted at Alexandria Main University Hospital, Egypt. A convenience sample of 352 nurses

Development and validation of the arabic version of the social-ecological model questionnaire for patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) in Arabic-speaking regions, particularly in Palestine, face unique sociopolitical and cultural barriers affecting their care and quality of life. Existing assessment tools rarely address the multi-level determinants of support within these populations, highlighting the need for a culturally validated instrument based on the Social-Ecological Model (SEM). OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate an Arabic-language questionnaire grounded in the SEM to assess the multi-level (community, interpersonal, organizational, and policy) support fa

Therapeutic drug monitoring to personalize dosing of imatinib, sunitinib, and pazopanib: A mixed methods study on barriers and facilitators.

BACKGROUND: Personalized dosing based on measurement of individual drug levels and adjusting the dose accordingly can improve efficacy and decrease unnecessary toxicity of oncological treatment. For imatinib, sunitinib, and pazopanib, this therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM)-guided dosing is, however, not routinely used, despite accumulating evidence favoring individualized dosing. Therefore, we aimed to identify and quantify (potential) barriers and facilitators in TDM-guided dosing for imatinib, sunitinib, and pazopanib. METHODS: We performed a mixed methods study among all stakeholders invol

Civic Engagement, Positive Organizational Sentiment, and Health in Baltimore, Maryland.

While the presence of organizations in neighborhoods has been widely studied, studies have generally not considered whether sentiment toward neighborhood organizations might be associated with public health. Neglecting this affective dimension of organizations limits our grasp on the influence of organizations on processes that mitigate or exacerbate health disparities. We used the 2023 Baltimore Area Survey (weighted n = 1,135,389 adults) to assess whether respondents viewed nearby businesses, nearby nonprofits, and local government positively and whether "positive organization sentiment" was
