The Differential Time-Varying Effect Model (DTVEM): A tool for diagnosing and modeling time lags in intensive longitudinal data.

With the recent growth in intensive longitudinal designs and the corresponding demand for methods to analyze such data, there has never been a more pressing need for user-friendly analytic tools that can identify and estimate optimal time lags in intensive longitudinal data. The available standard exploratory methods to identify optimal time lags within univariate and multivariate multiple-subject time series are greatly underpowered at the group (i.e., population) level. We describe a hybrid exploratory-confirmatory tool, referred to herein as the Differential Time-Varying Effect Model (DTVEM

Local independence and residual covariance: a study of olympic figure skating ratings.

Rasch fit analysis has focused on tests of global fit and tests of the fit of individual parameter estimates. Critics have noted that slight, but pervasive, patterns of misfit to a Rasch model within the data may escape detection using these approaches. These patterns contradict the Rasch axiom of local independence, and so degrade measurement and may bias measures. Misfit to a Rasch model is captured in the observation residuals. Traces of pervasive, but faint, secondary dimensions within the observations may be identified using factor analytic techniques. To illustrate these techniques, the

Statistical analysis of disease onset during lifespan with left truncation.

We consider a new nonparametric method for analyzing the onset of a chronic condition, e.g., dementia, when death occurs frequently in the study population. In contrast to the commonly used semi-competing risks or illness-death model, we study the distribution of the disease onset time conditional on the death time, which consists of two components that provide straightforward interpretations of the disease onset during the lifespan. Without imposing any model assumption, we propose a kernel-weighted product-limit estimator that properly handles the left-truncation, a common issue in aging stu

Bayesian hierarchical models for network meta-analysis incorporating nonignorable missingness.

Network meta-analysis expands the scope of a conventional pairwise meta-analysis to simultaneously compare multiple treatments, synthesizing both direct and indirect information and thus strengthening inference. Since most of trials only compare two treatments, a typical data set in a network meta-analysis managed as a trial-by-treatment matrix is extremely sparse, like an incomplete block structure with significant missing data. Zhang et al. proposed an arm-based method accounting for correlations among different treatments within the same trial and assuming that absent arms are missing at ra

Random-effects meta-analysis via generalized linear mixed models: A Bartlett-corrected approach for few studies.

Random-effects models are central to meta-analysis, yet the between-study variance is often underestimated when the number of studies is small. In such settings, confidence intervals become unduly narrow and fail to attain the nominal coverage probability. Although several small-sample corrections, including the Bartlett correction, have been developed under the normal-normal model, corresponding methodology for generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) remains limited. This study proposes a unified framework for random-effects meta-analysis within the GLMM framework that relies exclusively on a

Risk estimation and dynamic prediction using discrete-time joint models for longitudinal and multistate data with interval and state censoring.

This paper presents a joint model of multivariate longitudinal data and multistate data with application to modeling and predicting autoantibody development in The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study. The model quantifies the risks of state transitions based on observed time-varying and non-time-varying risk factors. Based on the estimated model, a dynamic prediction approach is suggested to predict future state occupation probabilities using historical data. The proposed method can handle uncertainties in the observed data, due to measurement errors in the observ

Sieve estimation of Cox models with latent structures.

This article considers sieve estimation in the Cox model with an unknown regression structure based on right-censored data. We propose a semiparametric pursuit method to simultaneously identify and estimate linear and nonparametric covariate effects based on B-spline expansions through a penalized group selection method with concave penalties. We show that the estimators of the linear effects and the nonparametric component are consistent. Furthermore, we establish the asymptotic normality of the estimator of the linear effects. To compute the proposed estimators, we develop a modified blockwi

Granger causality--statistical analysis under a configural perspective.

The concept of Granger causality can be used to examine putative causal relations between two series of scores. Based on regression models, it is asked whether one series can be considered the cause for the second series. In this article, we propose extending the pool of methods available for testing hypotheses that are compatible with Granger causation by adopting a configural perspective. This perspective allows researchers to assume that effects exist for specific categories only or for specific sectors of the data space, but not for other categories or sectors. Configural Frequency Analysi

Mathematical modelling of American cutaneous leishmaniasis: incidental hosts and threshold conditions for infection persistence.

We present a model for the dynamics of transmission of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) that includes a population of incidental hosts for parasites (that is, they act only as sinks of infection), along with species that are reservoir hosts (that is, both source and sink of infection). Although, there is evidence that suggests the existence of incidental hosts for Leishmania parasites, there are no mathematical models developed to account for this. Based on this model we obtained expressions that allow computing the threshold conditions for the persistence of the infection using three di

Identification of an additive interaction using parameter regularization and model selection in epidemiology.

BACKGROUND: In epidemiology, indicators such as the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion (AP), and synergy index (S) are commonly used to assess additive interactions between two variables. However, the results of these indicators are sometimes inconsistent in real world applications and it may be difficult to draw conclusions from them. METHOD: Based on the relationship between the RERI, AP, and S, we propose a method with consistent results, which are achieved by constraining e θ 3 - e θ 1 - e θ 2 + 1 = 0 , and the interpretation of the results is si

Item Cloning Variation and the Impact on the Parameters of Response Models.

Item cloning is increasingly used to generate slight differences in tasks for use in psychological experiments and educational assessments. This paper investigates the psychometric issues that arise when item cloning introduces variation into the difficulty parameters of the item clones. Four models are proposed and evaluated in simulation studies with conditions representing possible types of variation due to item cloning. Depending on the model specified, unaccounted variance in the item clone difficulties propagates to other parameters in the model, causing specific and predictable patterns

A data integration framework to improve the efficiency of survival analysis by leveraging multiple external studies with multifaceted heterogeneity.

In survival analysis, integrating multiple data sources holds significant potential to increase event counts, improve statistical efficiency, and enhance scientific discovery. However, challenges arise when external datasets differ in data forms, distributions, and covariate availability. We propose a novel learning framework that strengthens statistical inference of internal Cox regression coefficients through efficient data integration. Our framework is robust integration and accommodates multifaceted data heterogeneity through transformation, working models, penalized approach, and weightin

Covariate hypothesis tests for the cure rate in mixture cure models based on martingale difference correlation.

Cure models are a class of survival models used to analyze time-to-event data that allow the possibility that the event never occurs for a certain percentage 1-p, of the population. These methods allow for direct modelling of the cure rate and the influence of covariates on this rate. A common goal is to test whether the cure rate depends on a specific covariate or a set of covariates. The availability of methods to test the effect of covariates on the cure rate is limited in the literature. This paper proposes nonparametric hypothesis tests for the effect of covariates on the cure probability

Risk functions with outcome measurement error.

Mortality risk estimated from studies that ascertain date of death through linkage to vital statistics registries may be subject to outcome measurement error. As a result, some deaths among study participants may not be captured, some study participants who are alive may be falsely categorized as deceased, and some deaths may be recorded at incorrect times, leading to bias in estimates of mortality risk and survival. Here, we illustrate an extension of the Rogan-Gladen estimator to account for outcome measurement error in risk and survival functions in settings with right censoring. As a motiv

Associations in Medical Research Can Be Misleading: A Clinician's Guide to Causal Inference.

Understanding the difference between correlation and causation is essential in medical research, yet this distinction remains a common source of confusion among clinicians and researchers. While correlation indicates that two variables are related, it does not necessarily mean that changes in one variable directly cause changes in the other-a misunderstanding that can lead to misguided clinical decisions and flawed public health policies. Causal inference provides a powerful statistical framework for estimating true causal relationships, even in the absence of randomized controlled trials, whi

Bayesian causal inference for observational studies with missingness in covariates and outcomes.

Missing data are a pervasive issue in observational studies using electronic health records or patient registries. It presents unique challenges for statistical inference, especially causal inference. Inappropriately handling missing data in causal inference could potentially bias causal estimation. Besides missing data problems, observational health data structures typically have mixed-type variables - continuous and categorical covariates - whose joint distribution is often too complex to be modeled by simple parametric models. The existence of missing values in covariates and outcomes makes

Systemic mast cell disease. Analysis of 58 cases and literature review.

Based on study of 58 histologically proved cases of SMCD, we believe that the prognosis of most SMCD patients can be anticipated at the time of initial diagnosis by using 5 independent significant predictors developed in a multivariate model. Our study confirms the significance of several previously reported poor prognostic factors: absence of skin involvement and the presence of hepatosplenomegaly, cytologic atypia, and a hypercellular bone marrow. However, in contrast to previous reports we did not find a uniform correlation between the presence or absence of skin involvement and prognosis.

Fixed or Random Effects: Analysis of Clustered Data.

In analyzing clustered data, random effects (RE) and fixed effects (FE) models are two primary approaches. The RE model assumes that the cluster-specific effects are random and uncorrelated with individual characteristics. If this assumption is violated, the RE approach can lead to biased estimates of the coefficients of individual covariates and cluster effects. In contrast, the FE approach, which models cluster effects as fixed effects, yields unbiased estimates even if the cluster effects are correlated with individual covariates. Numerous studies have compared the FE and RE approaches. How

Examining within-person variability of each individual: How should we deal with non-varying individuals?

Researchers have witnessed a rapid increase in attention to within-person dynamic processes. However, individuals with observed zero within-person variability (i.e., non-varying individuals) remain understudied. This study investigates how non-varying individuals affect the estimation of within-person dynamic processes and offers practical recommendations. A motivating example of daily stressors demonstrates that including non-varying individuals can change substantive conclusions for univariate autoregressive models. Two simulation studies further explored how different proportions of non-var

A framework for causal estimand selection under positivity violations.

Estimating the causal effect of a treatment or health policy with observational data can be challenging due to an imbalance of and a lack of overlap between treated and control covariate distributions. In the presence of limited overlap, researchers choose between (1) methods (e.g., inverse probability weighting) that imply traditional estimands but whose estimators are at risk of considerable bias and variance; and (2) methods (e.g., overlap weighting) which imply a different estimand by modifying the target population to reduce variance. We propose a framework for navigating the tradeoffs be
