Recurrent Molar in Five Consecutive Pregnancies - A Case Report.

Recurrent molar pregnancy is very rare. In this case report, we highlight a case of a patient who experienced five recurrent molar pregnancies without an intervening normal pregnancy. A 22-year-old patient was admitted to our labour room with a fifth consecutive molar pregnancy. The patient underwent suction and evacuation and was followed up with serial serum human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) estimation. The patient did not require chemotherapy. Karyotype of the patient and her husband was normal. Nonetheless, the couple was counselled for adoption.

Ankylosed Primary Molar in a Japanese Child with Hypophosphatasia.

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare genetic disorder; affected patients may experience early exfoliation of primary teeth, especially anterior … eplacement with permanent teeth in the anterior region. However, the primary mandibular right first molar appeared to be submerged when the patient was 8 years and 3 months of age; the severity of submergence was greater when the patient was 9 years of age. The affected primary molar was considered to be ankylosed; it was extracted when the patient was …

Neonatal molar in a child with Langerhan cell histiocytosis.

Teeth which erupt in the 1st month of postnatal life are known as "neonatal tooth." The incidence of these teeth ranges from 1:2000 to 1:3500 live births. Natal teeth are more common in mandibular central incisor region, followed by maxillary incisor region and mandibular canine region. The neonatal or natal teeth in the maxillary molar region are a rare occurrence. This article represents a rare case of the neonatal tooth with Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

Endodontic Retreatment of Maxillary Second Molar with Four Roots.

The present communication describes the endodontic retreatment of a rare four-rooted maxillary second molar. A 25-year-old patient was referred to our dental practice requesting an apicoectomy because of continuous and permanent pain reaction six months after the first endodontic treatment. The sent radiograph demonstrated three filled root canals (one mesial, two distal) and four radiographically superimposing roots (two mesial, two distal). Due to the diagnosed chronic apical periodontitis and based on the visible untreated root canal, we decided to endodontically re-treat the quadrangular t…

Reinforcing Mucus Barrier Properties with Low Molar Mass Chitosans.

The mucus gel covers the wet epithelia that forms the inner lining of the body. It constitutes our first line of defense protecting the body from infections and other deleterious molecules. Failure of the mucus barrier can lead to the inflammation of the mucosa such as in inflammatory bowel diseases. Unfortunately, there are no effective strategies that reinforce the mucus barrier properties to recover or enhance its ability to protect the epithelium. Herein, we describe a mucus engineering approach that addresses this issue where we physically cross-link the mucus gel with low molar mass chit…

Molar distalization with 2K appliance: one-year follow-up.

Correction of class II molars in growing patients with acceptable facial profile can be performed by distalization of maxillary first molars. However, in patients where compliance is difficult intraoral means of molar distalization is required. This case report describes the use and effectiveness of a novel 2K appliance in an 11-year-old female having an orthognathic profile, skeletal Class I relation, and Angle's Class II division 1 malocclusion with crowding of 8 mm and 3 mm in the maxillary and mandibular arches, respectively. Nonextraction treatment was planned with bilateral distalization…

Maxillary canine‒second molar transposition: A rare case report.

Tooth transposition, which is a rare condition, is ascribed to the disturbance of tooth eruption and the subsequent abnormal occlusal relationships. Transpositions mostly involve the upper jaw and more frequently occur between the maxillary canine and first premolar. Herein, we present a case of a maxillary canine‒second molar transposition in a thalassemic patient.

[Orthodontic Management of the Impacted Mandibular Second Molar Tooth].

INTRODUCTION: When the mandibular permanent second molar becomes impacted, it is identified as a malocclusion that needs treatment as it often leads to unwanted complications such as caries and periodontitis of the adjacent permanent first molar. Other less common complications include root resorption of the adjacent first molar root or continued root development to be in close proximity to the inferior dental alveolar nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This paper seeks to differentiate various levels of severity of impaction and review treatment options that are considered clinically available fo…

Prevalence and Characteristics of the Maxillary C-shaped Molar.

INTRODUCTION: The anatomy of the maxillary C-shaped molar has been the subject of several case reports although no true prevalence research has ever been conducted. The aim of this observational study was to evaluate and characterize the incidence of these morphologies using cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) technology. METHODS: Patients having presurgical CBCT examination were selected. CBCT analysis was performed at 5 different axial levels, and the teeth were classified as maxillary molar C shapes according to the inclusion criteria for the present investigation. The prevalence of C-sh…

Plasma mepivacaine concentrations in patients undergoing third molar surgery.

BACKGROUND: Local anaesthetic-related systemic toxicity mainly results from elevated plasma concentrations of these drugs. We hypothesized that intraoral injection of submaximal doses of mepivacaine does not lead to toxic levels of this drug in blood. This study evaluated the plasma levels of mepivacaine in third molars surgeries. METHODS: Twenty-one patients were randomly assigned into two groups: group I (two unilateral third molars; submaximal dose of mepivacaine 108 mg with epinephrine 54 μg) and group II (four third molars; submaximal dose of mepivacaine 216 mg with epinephrine 108 μg). …

Third molar impaction and agenesis: influence on anterior crowding.

Background Third molar influence on anterior crowding is controversial, but they are assumed to play a major role in compromising dental arch space. Aim To evaluate the relationship among impaction, agenesis and crowding in black South African males. Subjects and method Mandibles and maxillae of 535 black South African males in the Raymond A. Dart Collection of Human Skeletons, University of the Witwatersrand were examined for anterior crowding and third molar agenesis and impaction. Dental crowding was determined using Little's irregularity index. Results Individuals with impaction showed mor…

Technical and biological complications of single-molar implant restorations.

OBJECTIVES: Retrospective evaluation of the biological and technical complications in implant-supported single-tooth molar restorations performed in a private practice after functional periods of ≥4 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-five patients (34 females, age 51.7 ± 10.6 years) with 112 implants received annual follow-up examinations and participated in a maintenance program. The survival (in situ) and success (complication-free) rates of implants and superstructures were evaluated. Time-dependent peri-implantitis rates were calculated, and the influencing factors were identified using a…

The interplay of Graves' disease and twin molar pregnancy.

Twin molar pregnancy with coexistent viable fetus in a patient with Graves' disease is a rare entity. The patient is a 37-year-old woman who was hospitalised owing to persistent vomiting and vaginal bleeding. The pregnancy test was positive and the pelvic ultrasound disclosed twin gestation of complete mole and a coexistent viable 12-week fetus. β-Human chorionic gonadotropin (β-HCG) and free thyroid hormones were both elevated. The patient was also a diagnosed case of Graves' disease prior to this pregnancy. Given the risks for perinatal complications, the patient was offered early terminatio…
