The Culicidae mosquito family breeds in various natural and artificial water bodies. Phytotelmata are plant structures that hold water and are used by many mosquito species during their life cycle. Mosquitoes are disease vectors, and phytotelmata play an important role in harbouring them. Investigating these phytotelmata will facilitate to develop appropriate site specific vector control strategy. Approximately 750 phytotelmata in 16 locations on Car Nicobar Island was examined. Mosquito larvae were collected from different habitats such as tree holes, root holes, leaf axils, and bamboo stumps

BACKGROUND: Vector control measures are critical for the prevention and reduction of dengue virus (DENV) transmission. Effective vector control is reliant not only on knowledge of mosquito abundance, but also on the timely and accurate detection of mosquito-borne infection. Mosquito-based virus surveillance programs typically rely on pool-based mosquito testing, although whether individual-based mosquito testing is a feasible alternative to this has not been widely studied. Applying an individual-based mosquito testing approach, we conducted a 1-month surveillance study of DENV in adult Aedes

To date, there are no ideal animal models for study of natural sensitization leading to IgE- and lymphocyte-mediated hypersensitivities. We established such a model in which four BALB/c mice were each sensitized by exposure to at least 16 mosquito Aedes aegypti bites, twice a week for 4 weeks. Four non-exposed control mice were also studied. Mosquito A. aegypti head and thorax extract, saliva, and two recombinant salivary allergens (rAed a 1 and rAed a 2) were used in vitro as antigens. Intradermal tests were performed. Serum mosquito antigen-specific IgG, IgG1, IgG2a, and total IgE were measu

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus are the most important vector mosquito species globally and are capable of transmitting various viral diseases, such as dengue fever, zika virus disease, and chikungunya fever. Although they overlap in terms of ecological niches and geographical distribution, their virus carriage and transmission capacities differ significantly. Metavirome studies can provide new perspectives for understanding these differences.
METHODS: In this study, next-generation sequencing (NGS) was used to analyze the epidemiologically significant metaviromes of Ae. aegypti

Roadside stormwater catch basins are frequently treated with larvicides in metropolitan areas because they are ideal larval growth sites for West Nile virus (WNV) vector species Culex pipiens Linnaeus and Cx. restuans (Theobald). Despite the wide-spread implementation of catch basin treatments in integrated vector management programs, there is little entomological evidence to suggest catch basin larvicide treatments reduce adult mosquito abundance and thereby impact WNV risk. We evaluated the impact of treating catch basins at three of four sites (700-1000 basins each) with a formulation of Ly

BACKGROUND: Increased global trade, while beneficial economically, can also increase the spread of vector-borne diseases, particularly those transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes spreading via trade routes. Given the heightened trade-induced activity at ports of entry, it is particularly crucial to assess the risk of mosquito-borne diseases in these settings. This study compared the risks of Aedes-borne disease in and around the eastern Tanzanian seaport of Tanga.
METHODS: A 200 m × 200 m grid-based system was used to sample mosquitoes within the port area, and in surrounding areas at 2 km, 2.5 km,

BACKGROUND: Dirofilaria immitis is a life-threatening mosquito-borne parasite affecting dogs. Prevention mainly relies on macrocyclic lactones (MLs), but D. immitis resistance to MLs and lack of compliance may occur. Multimodal strategies combining chemoprophylaxis and vector control with insecticide and repellent products are often recommended. This study evaluated the efficacy of Frontline Tri-Act® (IVP), a topical combination of fipronil and permethrin, in preventing the transmission of D. immitis by repelling mosquitoes in naturally exposed dogs.
METHODS: This study was conducted in north

In China, the prevention and control of Zika virus disease has been a public health threat since the first imported case was reported in February 2016. To determine the vector competence of potential vector mosquito species, we experimentally infected Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes and determined infection rates, dissemination rates, and transmission rates. We found the highest vector competence for the imported Zika virus in Ae. aegypti mosquitoes, some susceptibility of Ae. albopictus mosquitoes, but no transmission ability for Cx. quinquefasciatus mosqu

Mosquitoes act as a vector for most of the life threatening diseases like malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya ferver, filariasis, encephalitis, West Nile Virus infection, etc. Under the Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM), emphasis was given on the application of alternative strategies in mosquito control. The continuous application of synthetic insecticides causes development of resistance in vector species, biological magnification of toxic substances through the food chain and adverse effects on environmental quality and non target organisms including human health. Application…

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Determining the host seeking and resting behaviours of malaria vectors in a locality is vital for the design and implementation of locally adapted vector control strategies. This study investigated the seasonal abundance, host seeking, and resting behaviours of malaria vectors in localities where insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) are persistently used in Mazowe and Shamva districts, Zimbabwe.
METHODS: Anopheles mosquitoes were sampled from both living and non-living structures using CDC light traps, Prokopack aspirator, and artificial pi

Zoonotic malaria, particularly Plasmodium knowlesi, has emerged as a growing public health concern across Southeast Asia, with increasing incidence reported in multiple countries. The recent detection of additional zoonotic Plasmodium species further complicates the epidemiological landscape, underscoring the expanding interface among humans, wildlife reservoirs, and mosquito vectors. Despite this trend, progress towards effective control and elimination remains limited, largely due to substantial gaps in entomological knowledge across many endemic regions. Currently, only a narrow range of ve

In this article, we integrate the release of Wolbachia-carrying male mosquitoes with chemical insecticide spraying to formulate a coupled model that incorporates mosquito stage structure and malaria transmission dynamics. The model accounts for mating competition influenced by cytoplasmic incompatibility and employs a Holling-II type saturated release mechanism to dynamically match the release intensity of infected male mosquitoes with the density of wild mosquitoes. The study first verifies the positive invariance and boundedness of solutions of the model. It then derives the basic reproducti

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a re-emerging mosquito-borne virus that has spread from Africa to Asia and the Americas, posing a growing global threat to public health. In China, following the first imported case in 2008 and subsequent local outbreaks, the largest nationwide epidemic occurred in 2025 with nearly 9,000 confirmed cases. Clinically, CHIKV infection is characterized by high fever, rash, and severe arthralgia, often leading to long-term joint pain and reduced quality of life. The virus is primarily transmitted by Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti, with transmission dynamics influenc

Long-lasting insecticidal nets and indoor residual sprays have played a major role in significantly reducing the burden of malaria. However, the management of mosquitoes resistant to current insecticides continues to be challenging. A promising new strategy is drug-based vector control where drugs are administered to vector hosts (human/animal), which renders the host blood toxic to mosquitoes-thereby reducing mosquito lifespan, fecundity and onward transmission of pathogens. Afoxolaner, fluralaner, and lotilaner are isoxazoline derivatives widely used as systemic insecticides for ectoparasite

Since a resurgence occurred in 1993, malaria has remained an endemic disease in the Republic of Korea (ROK). A major challenge is the inaccessibility of current vector mosquito abundance data due to a 2-week reporting delay, which limits timely implementation of control measures. We aimed to nowcast mosquito abundance and assess its utility by evaluating the predictive value of mosquito abundance for malaria epidemic peaks. We used machine learning models to nowcast mosquito abundance, employing gradient boosting models (GBMs), extreme gradient boosting (XGB), and an ensemble model combining b

BACKGROUND: Laos aims to eliminate malaria by 2030, with residual transmission present in the south. Understanding how LLINs function in relation to vector and human behaviours, and linking this to epidemiological outcomes, is critical for improving vector control strategies. Integrating human behaviour observations (HBOs) with entomological and epidemiological data helps identify gaps in protection and inform national malaria programs.
METHODS: Entomological surveillance of Anopheles mosquitoes was conducted alongside HBOs in both rainy (July-September 2022) and dry (February-April 2023) sea

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a leading cause of mortality in Kenya, despite concerted efforts in malaria vector control. Reducing outdoor transmission is a key factor in addressing residual malaria. Outdoor latrines are characterized as semi-sheltered structures with humid environments, which may provide an ideal resting site for Anopheles species to feed on human blood and subsequently rest. This study aimed to quantify the abundance of adult mosquitoes in houses and outdoor latrines, as well as explore the environmental factors associated with mosquito abundance.
METHODS: Monthly mosquito sa

The study investigated the knockdown and repellent efficacy of smoke from native plants, Vitex payos (Lour.) Merr., Peltophorum africanum Sond., and Adansonia digitata L., against malaria vectors in Bare ward, Mazowe district, Zimbabwe. Three to five-day-old An. gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) were exposed to smoke from the three plants over 150 minutes during knockdown tests. Mortality was scored after 24 hours. A randomized 4 x 4 Latin square design was used to assign plant smoke and control treatments to huts and nights during repellency tests. Repellency was estimated as percentage reduction in

BACKGROUND: Vector control is an essential component of malaria prevention that has contributed to the reduction in malaria burden since 2000. Although steady progress in malaria vector control has been achieved over the years, the malaria burden remains substantial, underscoring the need for complementary mosquito control tools to further reduce transmission. Attractive targeted sugar baits (ATSBs) are a novel vector control tool under evaluation. The ATSB paradigm leverages the sugar feeding and resting behavior of mosquitoes exposing them to the lethal effect of an added insecticide. Prior …
