[Ventricular activation process and interventricular septal motion].

The mechanism of abnormal motion of the interventricular septum (IVS) in the altered ventricular activation process was investigated using M-mode echocardiograms (ECHO). Subjects consisted of 37 patients in whom artificial pacemakers was implanted because of sick sinus syndrome in 14 and atrioventricular block in 23. Standard 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs) were classified in three groups based on the polarity of the main deflections of the QRS complexes in leads V1 and V6; the pattern was designated as the LBBB type if the main QRS deflections were negative in V1 and positive in V6; as the …

Space motion sickness: phenomenology, countermeasures, and mechanisms.

A summary of the incidence of Space Motion Sickness (SMS) in 27 Soviet cosmonauts who flew on missions varying from 2-185 d in the Salyut-6/Soyuz vehicle complex is presented. A questionnaire indicated that 88% (24) of the cosmonauts developed some type of "illusionary sensations" while 44% (12) presented some degree of SMS. The SMS countermeasures used in flight included an antihistaminic drug, pneumatic cuffs applied to the thigh region, application of lower body negative pressure, a head cap that restricted head movement while simultaneously providing force stimulus to the cervical antigrav…

Mechanisms of mitral valve motion during diastole.

To examine the mechanisms of mitral valve motion in mid diastole and at closure, we simultaneously measured mitral flow (electromagnetic), valve motion (echo), and atrioventricular pressures (micromanometer). Peak valve excursion (E point) occurs early 46 +/- 7 ms) after opening and always precedes peak flow; therefore, mid-diastolic closing motion (EF slope) is not due to flow deceleration or vortex formation. Large variations in peak flow are accompanied by small variations in valve excursion (coefficient of variation 41 vs. 12%, respectively). We conclude that the valve overshoots its equil…

Free fall: a partial unique motion environment.

Conditions leading to the elicitation of motion sickness have been divided into two main categories: partial motion environments, in which head movements are required to elicit motion sickness, and complete motion environments, in which independent movements of the head are not required for the production of symptoms. It is postulated that, according to this categorization, free fall constitutes a partial motion environment. In support of this hypothesis evidence is reviewed from Skylab missions, experiments in parabolic flight, and ground-based studies.

Pulmonary valve echo motion in clinical practice.

Examination of the pattern of pulmonary valve echo motion provides useful diagnostic information in a variety of clinical situations. This report describes the normal patterns and variations in pulmonary valve echo motion. It further discusses the applications and limitations of M-mode and cross-sectional echocardiography in detecting obstruction to right ventricular outflow at both the valvular and infundibular level; the wide ranging effects of increases in pulmonary artery pressure on the pulmonary valve echogram; and alterations in right ventricular compliance and volume which may combine …

Some psychological correlates of motion sickness susceptibility.

Four groups of 37 subjects each (highly susceptible men, highly susceptible women, nonsusceptible men, and nonsusceptible women) were obtained from a population of 2,432 college students ranging in age from 18 to 39 years. Susceptibility to motion sickness was determined by scores on a motion sickness questionnaire (MSQ); only individuals with extreme scores were considered for inclusion in the experimental groups. The following tests were administered: Floor Ataxia Test Battery, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Menstrual Distress Questionnaire, Cornell Medical Index, Cornell Work Form, Eysenck …

Posterior mitral leaflet motion in mitral stenosis.

A reduced rate of diastolic closure of the anterior mitral leaflet has been shown to occur in mitral stenosis, primary pulmonary hypertension, and in cases with reduced left ventricular compliance. Posterior notion of the posterior mitral leaflet in diastole has been the distinguishing feature to rule out the diagnosis of mitral stenosis. We have analyzed echocardiograms of 167 patients with mitral stenosis and have found 16 cases where the posterior mitral leaflet moved posteriorly, that is, in an opposite direction from the anterior mitral leaflet. Two other features were found that were hel

Pulmonary valve echo motion in pulmonary regurgitation.

Four cases are presented to illustrate the echo patterns of pulmonary valve motion in patients with pulmonary regurgitation caused by pulmonary hypertension, idiopathic dilatation of the pulmonary artery, or congenital absence of the pulmonary valve or in association with pulmonary stenosis. Absence of the pulmonary 'a' wave, fluttering of the e-f slope, and midsystolic closure or 'notching' of the valve were noted with pulmonary hypertension. In the case with idiopathic dilatation of the pulmonary artery a normal echo pattern of pulmonary valve motion along with distinct dilatation of the pul…

Individual differences in the temporal progression of motion sickness and anxiety: the role of passengers' trait anxiety and motion sickness history.

The objective of the study is to show that trait anxiety and motion sickness history are responsible for different temporal progressions of sickness in passengers. The level of inflight anxiety and inflight sickness severity was monitored for 124 passengers in a full-motion cabin simulator during a short-haul flight with four different flight segments. Four groups with different characteristics in trait anxiety and motion sickness susceptibility showed different profiles of inflight sickness development. High trait anxiety was responsible for high inflight anxiety and a constantly high level o…

Illusory Motion Perception Is Associated with Contrast Discrimination but Not Motion Sensitivity, Self-Reported Visual Discomfort, or Migraine Status.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonic flow meters and quantitative magnetic resonance angiography quantitatively assess flow during hemodynamic evaluation of cerebral ischemia. Although their reliability and reproducibility have been verified, their clinical impact in moyamoya disease has rarely been reported. OBJECTIVE: To investigate flow measurement outcomes in moyamoya disease patients pre- and postoperatively through a retrospective observational study. METHODS: We evaluated 41 patients undergoing their first revascularization surgery who were followed ≥6 mo. Hemodynamic parameters were recorded preop

Evaluation of motion sickness susceptibility by motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis: a case-control study.

PURPOSE: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine, with unknown origin. Some studies have noted impaired postural balance in AIS, in particular, difficulty to manage situations with sensory conflict. The motion sickness susceptibility can be secondary to a sensory conflict, for example, between visual and vestibular information. Our hypothesis is: patients with AIS have difficulty in managing situations with sensory conflict and therefore have increased motion sickness susceptibility. The purpose of this study was to evaluate in AIS subjects by evalua…

Quantitative assessment of the motion of the lumbar spine in the low back pain population and the effect of different spinal pathologies of this motion.

There are few objective means by which disability caused by low back pain (LBP) can be quantified. The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of motion measurements in the assessment of LBP. The motion characteristics of 138 LBP subjects were investigated, and the data compared with a previously published database of normal subjects. Values of range of motion and angular velocity were obtained for all subjects in each plane of motion. Analysis of these motion characteristics demonstrated significant differences (P < 0.0001) between the two populations; however both populations…

Exploratory analysis of relationship between trunk and pelvic motion and shoulder motion during throwing in quarterbacks in American football.

BACKGROUND: American football quarterbacks (QBs) often sustain shoulder and elbow injuries from throwing. During the late cocking phase of p … otball QBs participated, each throwing 5 balls over 27.4 m (30 yards) with maximum effort. Throwing motions were recorded at 240 Hz using an iPad positioned at the participant's side. Kinematic data were analyzed using PitchAI to calculate the trunk (flexion/extension and nonthrowing/throwing side rotation), pelvic (nonthrowing/throwing side rotation), a …
