Conditioned taste aversion and motion sickness in cats and squirrel monkeys.

The relationship between vomiting and conditioned taste aversion was studied in intact cats and squirrel monkeys and in cats and squirrel mo … ablation of the area postrema. The utility of conditioned taste aversion as a measure of subemetic motion sickness is discussed by examining agreement and disagreement between identifications of motion sickness by conditioned taste aversion and vomiting. It is suggested that a convincing demonstration of the utility of conditioned taste aversion as a measure of …

Histaminergic mechanism of motion sickness. Neurochemical and neuropharmacological studies in rats.

Rats were rotated about two parallel axes to produce motion sickness, and the histamine levels in their hypothalamus and pons-medulla oblongata were measured. Rotation for 60 min induced kaolin intake, which is a behavioral index of motion sickness in rats, and increased the histamine levels in the hypothalamus and pons-medulla oblongata, the highest levels occurring after 15 min of rotation. In bilaterally labyrinthectomized rats, no rise in histamine level was observed. alpha-Fluoromethylhistidine (alpha-FMH), which depletes the neural component of histamine in the brain, suppressed kaolin i…

A statistical examination of three approaches for predicting motion sickness incidence.

This paper examines three approaches which have been suggested for predicting motion sickness incidence (MSI) for actual or simulated broadband ship motion. Although only a small amount of empirical MSI data exists for motion other than that produced by a single sinusoid, this data provides strong statistical evidence that two approaches based on single sinusoid models fail to produce accurate predictions. Statistical judgments about a least-squares weighting approach must be reserved until enough data exists to provide an adequate test. In view of these results, it must be concluded that much…

A clinically useful polling technique for assessing susceptibility to motion sickness.

Susceptibility to motion sickness is a powerful index of individual differences and can be assessed in large populations without a test of performance. Although all questionnaire techniques introduce some error, we have demonstrated that a simple set of questions can lead to a five-point rating system with adequate validity and reliability. Our observations may be useful to any investigator interested in individual differences and have been extremely effective in sorting out behavioral trends in large samples of patients.

Individual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness among six Skylab astronauts.

One of the Skylab experiments dealt with motion sickness, comparing susceptibility in the workshop aloft with susceptibility preflight and postflight. Tests were conducted on and after mission-day 8 (MD 8) by which time the astronauts were adapted to working conditions. Stressful accelerations were generated by requiring the astronauts, with eyes covered, to execute standardized head movements (front, back, left, and right) while in a chair that could be rotated at angular velocities up to 30 rpm. The selected endpoint was either 150 discrete head movements or a very mild level of motion sickn…

Sensitized rotatory motion perception and increased susceptibility to motion sickness in vestibular migraine: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vestibular migraine (VM) patients are ictally and interictally hypersensitive for self-motion and visual perception. … pants by pushing a button. During and after rotation, participants rated the presence and extent of motion sickness using a sickness rating scale. RESULTS: We detected lower motion perception thresholds (7.54°/s vs. 23.49°/s; p < 0.001) in VM patients compared to HC but no difference at the basic VOR thresholds. Furthermore, the patients showed enhanced suscepti …

"Conflicting" motion cues to the visual and vestibular self-motion systems around 0.06 Hz evoke simulator sickness.

The basic question this research addressed was, how does simulator sickness vary with simulated motion frequency? Participants were 11 women and 19 men, 20 to 63 years of age. A visual self-motion frequency response curve was determined using a Chattecx posture platform with a VR4 head-mounted display (HMD) or a back-projected dome. That curve and one for vestibular self-motion specify a frequency range in which vestibular and visual motion stimuli could produce conflicting self-motion cues. Using a rotating chair and the HMD, a third experiment supported (p < .01) the hypothesis that conflict

Theoretical considerations on models of vestibular self-motion perception as inherent in computational frameworks of motion sickness.

This study examines self-motion perception incorporated into motion sickness models. Research on modeling self-motion perception and motion sickness has advanced independently, though both are thought to share neural mechanisms, making the construction of a unified model opportune. Models based on the Subjective Vertical Conflict (SVC) theory, a refinement of the neural mismatch theory, have primarily focused on motion sickness, with limited validation for self-motion perception. Emerging studies have begun evaluating the perceptual validity of these models, suggesting that some models can rep…

Impact of Visually Induced Motion Sickness from VR Depending on Viewing Patterns, View Movement, and Background Motion.

The impact of visually induced motion sickness from virtual reality (VR) because of viewing patterns, view movements, and background global motion was investigated experimentally through classification into four categories. Each of the ten subjects underwent watching four patterns with bio-signal measurements, such as electrocardiogram and respiration, answering a subjective questionnaire. The results of the subjective evaluation of biological effects indicate that the VR viewing pattern has a significantly lower influence on visually induced motion sickness than other patterns, such as viewing …

VR.net: A Real-world Dataset for Virtual Reality Motion Sickness Research.

Researchers have used machine learning approaches to identify motion sickness in VR experience. These approaches would certainly benefit from an accurately labeled, real-world, diverse dataset that enables the development of generalizable ML models. We introduce 'VR.net', a dataset comprising 165-hour gameplay videos from 100 real-world games spanning ten diverse genres, evaluated by 500 participants. VR.net accurately assigns 24 motion sickness-related labels for each video frame, such as camera/object movement, depth of field, and motion flow. Building such a dataset is challenging since man…

Exploring neurophysiological correlates of visually induced motion sickness using electroencephalography (EEG).

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a common phenomenon when using visual devices such as smartphones and virtual reality applications, with symptoms including nausea, fatigue, and headache. To date, the neuro-cognitive processes underlying VIMS are not fully understood. Previous studies using electroencephalography (EEG) delivered mixed findings, with some reporting an increase in delta and theta power, and others reporting increases in alpha and beta frequencies. The goal of the study was to gain further insight into EEG correlates for VIMS. Participants viewed a VIMS-inducing visual …

Preliminary Evaluation of an Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment to Prevent Motion Sickness.

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness affecting military pilots and aircrew can impact flight safety and, if severe, can lead to disqualification from flight status. However, due to the common adverse effects of motion sickness pharmaceuticals (e.g., drowsiness), medication options are severely limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential utility of a nonpharmaceutical method for motion sickness prevention, specifically an osteopathic manipulative technique (OMT).METHODS:A novel OMT protocol for the reduction of motion sickness symptoms and severity was evaluated using a sham-contro…

Validation of a moving base driving simulator for motion sickness research.

Increasing levels of vehicle automation are envisioned to allow drivers to engage in other activities but are also likely to increase the incidence of Carsickness or Motion Sickness (MS). Ideally, MS is studied in a safe and controlled environment, such as a driving simulator. However, only few studies address the suitability of driving simulators to assess MS. In this study, we validate a moving base driving simulator for MS research by comparing the symptoms and time course of MS between a real-road driving scenario and a rendition of this scenario in a driving simulator, using a within-subj…
