[Progressive muscular atrophy: clinical and laboratory study in eleven patients].

Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA), an infrequent type of motor neuron disease (MND), is a predominantly lower motor neuron degeneration, causing muscle wasting and weakness with loss of weight and fasciculations. The diagnosis is based on rigid criteria, considering clinical aspects and eletroneuromyography findings. Blood tests and radiological investigation are necessary to look for other diagnosis mimicking PMA. We herein present 11 patients with PMA (5.9% of all our MND patients), 9 men and 2 women, which onset of symptoms occurred mainly under de age of 50, with a mean of 45.5 years. Cra

Stiff-Person Syndrome with Anti-Amphiphysin Antibodies: A Paraneoplastic Phenomenon Revealing Breast Cancer in a 77-Year-Old Male.

INTRODUCTION: Stiff-person syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by painful muscle cramps and progressive muscle spasticity. In patients with positive anti-amphiphysin antibodies, there is an association with malignancies such as breast carcinomas and small cell lung cancers. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 77-year-old male patient who developed symptoms of anti-amphiphysin positive stiff-person syndrome and was diagnosed with breast cancer. After immunomodulatory and curative-intent oncological treatment, the patient experienced marked improvement in his neurological s…

Clinical Presentation of Hypoparathyroidism.

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is one of the major hormones that regulates serum calcium. Hypoparathyroidism occurs when PTH secretion is insufficient. The main symptoms of hypoparathyroidism are the result of low blood calcium levels, hypocalcemia, which interferes with normal muscle contraction and nerve conduction. As a result, people with hypoparathyroidism can experience paresthesia, an unpleasant tingling sensation around the mouth and in the hands and feet, as well as muscle cramps and severe spasms known as "tetany" that affect the hands and feet. Many also report a number of other subjecti…

Epidemiology of adverse reactions in anaesthesia in the United Kingdom.

Adverse reactions to intravenous anaesthetics and muscle relaxants are characterised by peripheral vasodilatation with oedema, hypotension, tachycardia, bronchospasm and (more rarely) vomiting and abdominal cramps. The number of published cases in the U.K. is rising yearly. The frequency with all cremophor-containing drugs is about 1 in 1,000 cases but the number recorded following other induction agents is increasing. Most reactions following muscle relaxants have been documented in other countries but this probably reflects local interpretation rather than true geographical differences. The

Muscle phosphoglycerate mutase deficiency.

A 52-year-old man complained since adolescence of cramps and pigmenturia after 15 to 30 minutes of intense exercise. There was no family history of neuromuscular diseases, and strength was normal. The rise of venous lactate after forearm ischemic exercise was abnormally low. Histochemical and ultrastructural studies of a muscle biopsy showed mild increase of glycogen, which was confirmed by biochemical analysis. Studies of anaerobic glycolysis in vitro showed decrease lactate formation with glycogen and with all hexosephosphate glycolytic intermediates, suggesting a defect below the phosphofru

Cine MRI during spontaneous cramps in women with menstrual pain.

BACKGROUND: The lack of noninvasive methods to study dysmenorrhea has resulted in poor understanding of the mechanisms underlying pain, insufficient diagnostic tests, and limited treatment options. To address this knowledge gap, we have developed a magnetic resonance imaging-based strategy for continuously monitoring the uterus in relationship to participants' spontaneous pain perception. OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to evaluate whether magnetic resonance imaging can detect real-time changes in myometrial activity during cramping episodes in women with dysmenorrhea, with a handheld sque

[Psychosomatic determinants of graphospasm].

As there is a variety of psychic and somatic variables in its genesis, the writer's cramp could be a syndrome of different subtypes. Therefore 62 former psychotherapy-patients with writer's cramp were examined according to a design of several dimensions in order to find out if there were any subtypes. The parts of the examination were exploration, structural interview, neurological examination, psychological examination of the personality, examination of some electrolytes in serum and radiograph of neck spinal column. Different multivariate statistical methods isolated two subtypes of patients

Combined oral contraceptive pill for primary dysmenorrhoea.

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhoea (painful menstrual cramps) is common and a major cause of pain in women. Combined oral contraceptives (OCPs) are often used in the management of primary dysmenorrhoea, but there is a need for reporting the benefits and harms. Primary dysmenorrhoea is defined as painful menstrual cramps without pelvic pathology. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of combined oral contraceptive pills for the management of primary dysmenorrhoea. SEARCH METHODS: We used standard, extensive Cochrane search methods. The latest search date 28 March 2023. SELECTION CRITERIA: We
