Accidental intestinal myiasis caused by genus Sarcophaga.

Myiasis of different organs has been reported off and on from various regions in the world. We report a human case of intestinal myiasis caused by larvae of Sarcophaga. A 25 - year - old male presented with symptom of passage of live worms in stool. Following diagnosis and treatment the patient improved completely with cessation of maggots in stool.

Myiasis after study trip to French Guiana.

Cutaneous myiasis is usually a harmless tropical disease caused by infestation with larvae from a variety of flies. Because of its rare occurrence in Europe, it is often misdiagnosed. Increased travel to tropical regions has correspondingly increased the number of cases observed in Europe. The furuncular type of cutaneous myiasis in a 31-year-old biology student was diagnosed upon his return from French Guiana. The student cultured one of the larvae to obtain a botfly. This case is discussed in the light of the current literature on pathogenesis, incidence and therapy of cutaneous myiasis.

Botfly myiasis: case report and brief review.

The painful, boil-like lesion of furuncular myiasis is a result of the invasion of subcutaneous tissues by larvae of Dermatobia hominis, the human botfly. This arthropod is indigenous to Mexico, and Central and South America, and imported cases to the United States are increasing as travel to these regions continues to rise. There are several dozen reports of furuncular myiasis in the United States and Canadian literature since the initial description of this disease in 1920. None of the reports are in the surgical literature, which is surprising because the treatment of choice is surgical exc…

[Human nasal myiasis due to Oestrus ovis].

One case of human nasal myiasis caused by second and third instar larvae of Oestrus ovis was observed in Lille (North France). Oestrosis is a common myiasis of sheep and goats in Mediterranean and Tropical countries. The authors examine the oestrosis pathogenesis in the usual host (sheep) or in humans, and analyse the epidemiology, the symptomatology and the treatment of human oestrosis.

Oestrid myiasis in European mouflon from Spain.

From February 1992 to March 1997, 245 European mouflon (Ovis orientalis musimon) from Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park (southern Spain) were surveyed for oestrid larvae in order to estimate prevalence and mean intensity of parasitism by Oestrus ovis. Over 46 percent of the animals surveyed were infected, with a mean intensity of 9.6 larvae/host parasitized. No significant differences in prevalence rates between host sexes were observed, but older mouflons were infected with more larvae than younger ones.

Exotic myiasis with Lund's fly (Cordylobia rodhaini).

After a four-week holiday in East Africa, a woman was diagnosed with furuncular myiasis: a third-instar larva of the fly Cordylobia rodhaini (Lund's fly) was found in a skin lesion. This is the first report of exotic myiasis and importation of this species of fly into Australia, and reflects the increasing risk of introducing exotic flies of public health and veterinary importance to Australia.

Canine myiasis by sheep bot fly (Diptera:Oestridae).

We present a case of canine infestation by 3rd instars of Oestrus ovis (L.) in a 10-yr-old cross-bred dog (Collie x German Shepherd) from Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain. This report confirms that this fly can develop in dogs.

Troublesome myiasis complicated by peri-nephric abscess.

A normally fit European resident of East Africa developed a staphylococcal peri-nephric abscess following repeated episodes of furuncular myiasis caused by the tumbu fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga. A few lesions had required surgical intervention and one, presumably the source of sepsis, had become infected. There are very few descriptions in the literature of serious complications of myiasis and this is the first report of peri-nephric abscess from this source. This paper discusses the management of the myiasis and what factors determine the variation in host susceptibility and immune response…

Nasal myiasis due to Oestrus ovis larvae.

Herein we report our experiences in managing nasal infestation due to fly larvae in an urban population. The nasosinus location is infrequently seen in cases with human infection. The life cycle of the fly (Oestrus ovis) is discussed in view of the clinical features of our case.

Nasal myiasis: review of 10 years experience.

Nasal myiasis is a manifestation of the nasal cavities by larvae of the fly of genus Chrysomia. It is prevalent in tropical countries. Atrophic rhinitis is the most commonest predisposing factor for this condition. The maggots can cause extensive erosion of the nose, face and intra-cranial structures occasionally causing meningitis and death. Conservative management by packing the nose with a chloroform and turpentine (1:4) mixture followed by manual removal of the dead maggots is an effective method. Recurrence is known but partial closure of both nostrils to improve the condition of nasal mu…
