BACKGROUND: Symptoms of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) are atypical, and histopathological misdiagnosis of IMT is still inevitable. Here we present a pediatric case that an eight-year-old boy with recurrent fever for fifteen months, received anti-tuberculosis therapy for five months and was ultimately confirmed to be IMT.
CASE PRESENTATION: An eight-year-old boy experienced a recurrent fever for fifteen months, accompanied by cough, vomiting, meteorism, night sweating, and emaciation. Thoracoabdominal computer tomography revealed multiple enlarged lymph nodes in the thorax, abdomen,

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare tumor composed of myofibroblasts with inflammatory blood cell infiltration. It commonly occurs in the lungs and rarely in the esophagus. We herein report a valuable case of IMT originating in the esophagus. A 60-year-old Japanese woman with dysphagia had a large subepithelial lesion in the cervical esophagus, which was 15 cm in length. Surgical resection was performed to confirm the pathological diagnosis and improve the symptoms. The postoperative diagnosis was IMT composed of multiple nodules. There was no recurrence or metastasis within one…

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an ultra-rare soft tissue neoplasm associated with fusion proteins encompassing the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) protein fused to a variety of partner proteins. Data regarding response to ALK-targeting agents based on fusion partner is limited.
CASE: A 30-year-old female sought emergency care after onset of abdominal and lower back pain in 2019. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a cystic, mesenteric mass within the pelvis measuring up to 8.9 cm. Complete laparoscopic excision of the mass from the mesentery of the right colon and

OBJECTIVES: The paediatric tracheobronchial inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT) is a rare disease. Whether limited surgical resection is a feasible surgical approach for these patients remains controversial. The objectives of this study were to report the long-term prognosis after limited surgical resections on paediatric tracheobronchial IMT and provide a surgical management strategy for this rare disease.
METHODS: Paediatric tracheobronchial IMT patients who underwent limited surgical resection from 2012 to 2020 were enrolled in this study. The clinical characteristics, course of trea

We previously reported that Smad anchor for receptor activation (SARA) plays a critical role in maintaining epithelial cell phenotype. Here, we show that SARA suppressed myofibroblast precursor transdifferentiation in a mouse model of scleroderma. Mice overexpressing SARA specifically in PDGFR-β+ pericytes and pan-leukocytes (SARATg) developed significantly less skin fibrosis in response to bleomycin injection compared with wild-type littermates (SARAWT). Single-cell RNA-Seq analysis of skin PDGFR-β+ cells implicated pericyte subsets assuming myofibroblast characteristics under fibrotic stimul

Background: Dupuytren disease (DD) is characterised by increased myofibroblast/fibroblast activity and type3/type1 collagen ratios. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is major component of the extracellular matrix and some studies have showed that HA limits myofibroblast activity and decreases type3/type1 collagen ratio. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the ex-vivo application of HA on cultured fibroblasts obtained from normal and diseased tissue from patients with DD. This is the initial step towards defining the use of HA as a new approach for medical treatment of DD. Methods: Tissue sa

BACKGROUND: Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma (LGMS) is a rare malignant tumor. It has no specific clinical manifestations and commonly occurs in the head and neck, extremities and other body parts, with the liver not as its predisposing site.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a case report of a 58-year-old man with right upper abdominal pain for 11 d. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT), CE magnetic resonance imaging and CE ultrasound (US) all showed a cystic-solid mass in the right liver. As the initial clinical diagnosis was hepatic cystadenoma, surgical resection was performed, and the pos

Renal fibrosis is the final manifestation of various chronic kidney diseases. Interstitial myofibroblasts, which are reported to highly express integrin αvβ3, are the effector cells in renal fibrogenesis. Since current therapies do not efficiently target these cells, there is no effective therapeutic method for preventing or mitigating the disease. Here, we modified sterically stable PEGylated liposomes with the pentapeptide cRGDfC (RGD-Lip), which has a high affinity for αvβ3, to specifically deliver drug to renal interstitial myofibroblasts. Our results showed that attaching cRGDfC to liposo…

Skin and lung fibrosis in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is driven by myofibroblasts, alpha-smooth muscle actin expressing cells. The number of myofibroblasts in SSc skin correlates with the modified Rodnan skin score, the most widely used clinical measure of skin disease severity. Murine fibrosis models indicate that myofibroblasts can arise from a variety of different cell types, but their origin in SSc skin has remained uncertain. Utilizing single cell RNA-sequencing, we define different dermal fibroblast populations and transcriptome changes, comparing SSc to healthy dermal fibroblasts. Here, we…

Cardiac fibrosis remains an unresolved problem in heart diseases. After initial injury, cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) are activated and subsequently differentiate into myofibroblasts (myoFbs) that are major mediator cells in the pathological remodeling. MyoFbs exhibit proliferative and secretive characteristics, and contribute to extracellular matrix (ECM) turnover, collagen deposition. The persistent functions of myoFbs lead to fibrotic scars and cardiac dysfunction. The anti-fibrotic treatment is hindered by the elusive mechanism of fibrosis and lack of specific targets on myoFbs. In this review…

Fibroblast to myofibroblast differentiation is a key feature of wound-healing in soft tissues, including the vagina. Vaginal fibroblasts maintain the integrity of the vaginal wall tissues, essential to keep pelvic organs in place and avoid pelvic organ prolapse (POP). The micro-environment of vaginal tissues in POP patients is stiffer and has different extracellular matrix (ECM) composition than healthy vaginal tissues. In this study, we employed a series of matrices with known stiffnesses, as well as vaginal ECMs, in combination with vaginal fibroblasts from POP and healthy tissues to investi

A 63-year-male had painless, progressive, yellowish-pink, immobile conjunctival mass with prominent feeder vessels in the right eye of 1-year duration. The rest of the ophthalmic examination was unremarkable. MRI showed no extension into orbit or extraocular muscles. An excision biopsy with the amniotic membrane patch was performed. Histopathology confirmed inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT) with SMA and calponin positivity on immunohistochemistry. Complete surgical excision, amniotic membrane, and oral steroids provided long-term relief from recurrence. The conjunctiva is a rare site f

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a neoplasm of intermediate biological potential. Few cases of spermatic cord IMT have been reported in the literature. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a consequence of the proliferation of fibroblasts and inflammatory cells. Despite its benign nature, the tumor often clinically mimics intrascrotal malignancy and usually remains undiagnosed preoperatively. The diagnosis of spermatic IMT is difficult preoperatively due to the non-specific findings. Therefore, if testicular tumors cannot be precisely excluded, radical orchiectomy should be perform

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an uncommon, usually benign, mesenchymal tumor. IMT affects people of all ages, but it more commonly occurs in children and adolescents. Also, it has the potential to arise in any part of the body, though, it frequently develops in the lungs and mesentery. In this report, we discuss a rare clinical manifestation of mesenteric IMT presented as intussusception of the small intestine in a 7-year-old child.

Inflammatory myofibroblast tumour (IMT) is an uncommon soft tissue tumour with an unpredictable clinical course: mostly benign, occasionally locally aggressive and rarely capable of metastasis. Diagnosed mainly in the mesentery, omentum, retroperitoneum, pelvis and lungs, IMT is extremely rare as a primary gallbladder tumour. Despite improved radiographical capabilities, differentiating the tumour from other more common causes of gallbladder neoplasms necessitates histopathological and immunohistochemistry tests. Once diagnosed, malignant potential should be taken into consideration, striving

An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor originating from the aorta is extremely rare. Here, we report a case involving a 41-year-old female patient with an aortic inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. Although preoperative imaging showed a mediastinal mass indicative of invasive thymoma, surgical findings revealed that this mass originated from the aorta. The patient underwent partial resection of the aorta, including the mass with patch angioplasty. Based on the postoperative histological findings, the patient was diagnosed with an aortic inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor and is currently under
