Patterns of Care of Cancers and Radiotherapy in Ethiopia.

PURPOSE: Radiotherapy (RT) is an essential component of cancer treatment. There is a lack of RT services in sub-Saharan Africa as well as limited knowledge regarding clinical practices. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the patterns for RT treatment in Ethiopia. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 1,823 patients treated with cobalt RT at a large referral hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from May 2015 through January 2018. Paper charts were reviewed for patient and treatment characteristics. Descriptive statistics were computed using SPSS (IBM

The influence of high-efficiency particulate air filtration on mortality among multiple myeloma patients receiving autologous stem cell transplantation.

Autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) continues to be the standard treatment for transplant-eligible multiple myeloma (MM) patients. A portion of MM patients received ASCT in an isolation room with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration. The effectiveness of the HEPA filtration on reducing treatment-related mortality (TRM) is controversial. We enrolled patients with newly diagnosed MM in Taiwan between 2000 and 2017. The primary endpoint of the study was TRM, which was defined as death within 100 days after ASCT. A total of 961 MM patients received ASCT. Of them, 480 patients

Validation of the Medicare-Enhanced Laboratory and Demographics (MELD™) Dataset: A Comprehensive Psychometric, Epidemiologic, and Predictive-Utility Assessment of a 60-Million-Patient Real-World Evidence Resource.

BackgroundReal-world evidence studies increasingly rely on integrated data resources that combine Medicare fee-for-service claims with electronic medical records (EMRs), laboratory results, and patient-reported outcomes. The Medicare-Enhanced Laboratory and Demographics (MELD™) dataset, developed by Columbia Data Analytics, spans 2020 through 2024 and contains 60 million unique patients, roughly 1 billion visits, and more than 241 000 clinicians. Its data-quality properties must be characterized before regulatory-grade use.ObjectiveTo provide a preregistered, multidomain validation of MELD, qu

Decoding the historical tale: COVID-19 impact on haematological malignancy patients-EPICOVIDEHA insights from 2020 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic heightened risks for individuals with hematological malignancies due to compromised immune systems, leading to more severe outcomes and increased mortality. While interventions like vaccines, targeted antivirals, and monoclonal antibodies have been effective for the general population, their benefits for these patients may not be as pronounced. METHODS: The EPICOVIDEHA registry (National Clinical Trials Identifier, NCT04733729) gathers COVID-19 data from hematological malignancy patients since the pandemic's start worldwide. It spans various global locations,

Correlates of exercise motivation and behavior in a population-based sample of endometrial cancer survivors: an application of the Theory of Planned Behavior.

BackgroundDespite evidence of the benefits of exercise in cancer survivors, exercise participation rates tend to decline after treatments. Few studies have examined the determinants of exercise in less common cancer sites. In this study, we examined medical, demographic, and social cognitive correlates of exercise in endometrial cancer survivors using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB).MethodsA mailed survey was completed by 354 endometrial cancer survivors (1 to 10 years postdiagnosis) residing in Alberta, Canada. The study was cross-sectional. Exercise behavior was assessed using the Godin

Sex Differences in Cancer-Associated Thrombosis.

Cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in oncology, arising from complex interactions between tumor biology, host factors, and anticancer therapies. Growing evidence indicates that biological sex and gender-related factors modulate both thrombotic risk and clinical expression of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with cancer. In this narrative review, we summarize current epidemiological, biological, and clinical data on sex- and gender-related differences in CAT across solid and hematologic malignancies. Men generally exhibit a higher overall inci

Indications for haematopoietic cell transplantation and CAR-T for haematological diseases, solid tumours and immune disorders: 2025 EBMT practice recommendations.

For over two decades, the EBMT has updated recommendations on indications for haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) practice based on clinical and scientific developments in the field. This is the ninth special EBMT report on indications for HCT for haematological diseases, solid tumours and immune disorders. Our aim is to provide guidance on HCT indications according to prevailing clinical practice in EBMT countries and centres. In order to inform patient decisions, these recommendations must be considered with the risk of the disease, risk of HCT procedure and non-HCT strategies, includi

Designing optimal allocations for cancer screening using queuing network models.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death, but mortality can be reduced by detecting tumors earlier so that treatment is initiated at a less aggressive stage. The tradeoff between costs associated with screening and its benefit makes the decision of whom to screen and when a challenge. To enable comparisons across screening strategies for any cancer type, we demonstrate a mathematical modeling platform based on the theory of queuing networks designed for quantifying the benefits of screening strategies. Our methodology can be used to design optimal screening protocols and to estimate their

Risk of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with Different Cancer Types in Taiwan.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) commonly occurs in approximately 2% of cancer patients, and the incidence of AF among cancer patients is greater than in the general population. This observational study presented the incidence risk of AF among cancer patients, including specific cancer types, using a population database. The Taiwan Cancer Registry was used to identify cancer patients between 2008 and 2017. The diagnosis of AF was based on the International Classification of Diseases codes (ICD-9-CM: 427.31 or ICD-10-CM: I48.0, I48.1, I48.2, and I48.91) in Taiwan national health insurance research data

The role of ixazomib as an augmented conditioning therapy in salvage autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) and as a post-ASCT consolidation and maintenance strategy in patients with relapsed multiple myeloma (ACCoRd [UK-MRA Myeloma XII] trial): study protocol for a Phase III randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell tumour with an approximate annual incidence of 4500 in the UK. Therapeutic options for patients with MM have changed in the last decade with the arrival of proteasome inhibitors and immunomodulatory drugs. Despite these options, almost all patients will relapse post first-line autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). First relapse management (second-line treatment) has evolved in recent years with an expanding portfolio of novel agents, driving response rates influencing the durability of response. A second ASCT, as part of relapsed diseas

Development of a clinical trial knowledge management application for community oncology.

IntroductionParticipation in cancer clinical trials is low in community oncology settings, partly because institution-specific trial information is fragmented. We evaluated feasibility of embedding curated trial content in an AI-enabled knowledge management application.Materials and methodsAt a regional community oncology network, coordinators and disease teams compiled actively recruiting trials. Core elements (title, conditions, biomarkers, stage/line, and recruiting status) were structured for point-of-care display and uploaded. AI-assisted extraction generated protocol summaries and eligib

Management of Multiple Myeloma and Usage of Bortezomib: Perspective from India and Ukraine.

Novel treatment strategies have remarkably improved the multiple myeloma (MM) patients' survival, with associated increased costs. A joint panel meet of international experts from India and Ukraine was held in New Delhi on May 19, 2016 focusing on MM management, bortezomib role, unmet medical needs, and current challenges. The health-care system for oncology in India is majorly private vs. government-based in Ukraine. In India, electrophoresis, serum-free light chain assays, bone marrow tests, and X-rays are available modes of diagnosis. Despite of the numerous cancer centers and stem cell tra

The Multidisciplinary Heart Team in Cardiovascular Medicine: Current Role and Future Challenges.

Cardiovascular multidisciplinary heart teams (MDHTs) have evolved significantly over the past decade. These teams play a central role in the treatment of a wide array of cardiovascular diseases affecting interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery, interventional imaging, advanced heart failure, adult congenital heart disease, cardio-oncology, and cardio-obstetrics. To meet the specific needs of both patients and heart programs, the composition and function of cardiovascular MDHTs have had to adapt and evolve. Although lessons have been learned from multidisciplinary cancer care, best practices

ACCELERATE: A Patient-Powered Natural History Study Design Enabling Clinical and Therapeutic Discoveries in a Rare Disorder.

Geographically dispersed patients, inconsistent treatment tracking, and limited infrastructure slow research for many orphan diseases. We assess the feasibility of a patient-powered study design to overcome these challenges for Castleman disease, a rare hematologic disorder. Here, we report initial results from the ACCELERATE natural history registry. ACCELERATE includes a traditional physician-reported arm and a patient-powered arm, which enables patients to directly contribute medical data and biospecimens. This study design enables successful enrollment, with the 5-year minimum enrollment g
