Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the eyelid: a case report and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: To report the clinical features, therapeutic method, and histopathological findings of a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the lower eyelid and review the literature about the mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from the eye. METHODS: Case report and review of the literature. RESULTS: An 88-year-old man developed a painless, indurated nodule in the left lower eyelid for two years and ulceration of the skin existed for a year. He underwent tumor resection and reconstruction of the eyelid. By histopathology, tumor cells showed an admixture of epidermoid and mucus-secreting cells, which

Role of High-Risk HPV Testing in Papanicolaou Tests With Atypical Glandular Cells With and Without Concurrent Squamous Cell Abnormalities.

OBJECTIVES: Data on Papanicolaou (Pap) tests with atypical glandular cells (AGCs) with concurrent squamous cell abnormalities (AGC + Sq) are limited. We evaluated histologic outcomes and the role of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) testing in this setting compared with AGCs without concurrent squamous cell abnormalities (AGC-alone). METHODS: This study used a retrospective cohort of patients with Pap test diagnoses of AGC + Sq and AGC-alone between October 2013 and August 2021. RESULTS: We included 287 Pap tests from 278 patients. The HR-HPV test was positive in 55% of AGC + Sq cases

DOG1 expression is common in human tumors: A tissue microarray study on more than 15,000 tissue samples.

DOG1 (Discovered on GIST1) is a voltage-gated calcium-activated chloride and bicarbonate channel that is highly expressed in interstitial cells of Cajal and in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) derived from Cajal cells. To systematically determine in what tumor entities and normal tissue types DOG1 may be further expressed, a tissue microarray (TMA) containing 15,965 samples from 121 different tumor types and subtypes as well as 608 samples of 76 different normal tissue types was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. DOG1 immunostaining was found in 67 tumor types including GIST (95.7%), esop

Microanatomy of the cervical and anorectal squamocolumnar junctions: a proposed model for anatomical differences in HPV-related cancer risk.

Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection causes cancers and their precursors (high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions) near cervical and anal squamocolumnar junctions. Recently described cervical squamocolumnar junction cells are putative residual embryonic cells near the cervical transformation zone. These cells appear multipotential and share an identical immunophenotype (strongly CK7-positive) with over 90% of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and cervical carcinomas. However, because the number of new cervical cancers discovered yearly world wide is 17-fold that of anal cancer,

Thymic Lymphoepithelial Carcinoma: A Rare Aggressive Mediastinal Mass.

Primary thymic lymphoepithelial carcinoma is a rare neoplasm of the mediastinum. The recognition of clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features can help in making an accurate diagnosis of this aggressive tumor at the earliest. Here, we present the radiologic and pathologic findings of an anterior mediastinal mass in a 44-year-old man, which turned out to be a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of thymic origin, also known as lymphoepithelioma-like thymic carcinoma.

Poorly differentiated laryngeal neuroendocrine neoplasm with high serum calcitonin level, a case report, with literature review.

Neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) of the larynx consists of 0.6% of laryngeal cancer and is the second most common type after squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Laryngeal NEN rarely secret calcitonin and should be differentiated from medullary thyroid carcinoma. It makes a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. We describe a case of a laryngeal NEN with calcitonin hypersecretion. A 59-year-old man presented to our clinic with recurrent cough, dysphonia, hoarseness, cervical mass, and significant weight loss. Diagnostic workup showed a supraglottic mass. Biopsy of the lesion revealed large-cell neuroend

Clinical, anatomopathological, and immunohistochemical findings of a transitional cell carcinoma from nasal cavity, frontal and ethmoidal sinus with meningoencephalic invasion in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Primary neoplasms of the nasal cavity and sinuses are uncommon in domestic animals, most of which are of epithelial origin, being adenocarcinoma the most common tumor diagnosed in this region. Some malignant nasal cavity neoplasms may invade the brain causing clinical neurological signs, as well as purulent nasal secretion and epistaxis. CASE DESCRIPTION: A case of neoplasm is reported in a 14-year-old pincher presenting dyspnea, epistaxis, and neurological alterations. Necropsy revealed the presence of a mass in the oral cavity vestibule, and another in the whole nasal cavity wit

The men behind the eponym--Abraham Buschke and Ludwig Lowenstein: giant condyloma (Buschke-Loewenstein).

In 1925 Abraham Buschke and Ludwig Loewenstein described a neoplasm of the penis (carcinomähnliche condylomata acuminata des penis), which, to them, bore resemblances to common condyloma acuminatum and squamous cell carcinoma, but it had histopathologic and clinical characteristics that differed from these 2 proliferations. Later Lauren V. Ackerman described a similar neoplasm of the oral mucosa that he termed "verrucous carcinoma." I have previously reviewed that neoplasm, now referred to as "oral verrucous carcinoma of Ackerman." Still later Aird and his colleagues described a unique neoplas

MRI of the penis.

This article reviews the anatomy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearance of the penis. The recommended technique for MRI of the penis is outlined, with discussion of the benefits and drawbacks to imaging the penis after artificial erection. Common penile pathologies are reviewed, with a summary of their clinical features, MRI appearance, and treatment. The ability to demonstrate the erectile bodies and vasculature helps to evaluate vascular pathologies such as priapism, Mondor disease, and cavernosal thrombosis. MRI is also a useful tool to assess for traumatic abnormalities of the pen

Human papillomavirus types 16 E1 mRNA is transcribed from P14 early promoter in cervical neoplasms.

High-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) persistent infection is responsible for the development of the majority of cervical cancers. The therapy against HPV-associated cancer requires knowledge of the viral gene expression mechanisms. In this study, the polyadenylated polycistronic transcripts containing full-size E1ORF and produced from the early P14 promoter were detected for the first time in cervical tumors with episomal forms of the HPV16 genome. P14-initiated mRNAs were revealed also in precancerous lesions. The amount of P14-initiated transcripts was significantly less compared to trans

Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of Salivary Gland: Limitations and Pitfalls on FNA.

Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of salivary gland origin. However, its morphologic heterogeneity poses difficulty in interpretation. In the present series we discuss the morphologic features of MEC, limitations and pitfalls in its diagnosis on Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC). Fourteen cases of suspected MEC were evaluated cytologically followed by histopathological examination for confirmation. A definite cytological diagnosis was rendered in nine cases; three of the remaining five were underdiagnosed as abscess, pleomorphic adenoma and mucus cyst. O

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the vulva - a  rare occurrence.

Vulval tumours are rare, representing merely 4% of all gynaecological neoplasms. 98% of vulvar lesions are benign, and only 2% are malignant. Of all vulvar malignancies, while squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignancy, leiomyosarcomas of the vulva are extremely rare. Usually these tumours have nonspecific clinical manifestations, often leading to misdiagnoses of Bartholin cysts or abscesses. We describe a case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with a nonspecific painless swelling in the left vulva for 2 months which was diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma of the vulva on biopsy as well

Apocrine adenocarcinoma of the vulva.

Cutaneous vulvar carcinomas are predominantly of squamous cell carcinoma type. Primary vulvar adenocarcinomas are rare with a poorly understood histogenesis. They are classified into extramammary Paget's disease, sweat gland carcinomas, and breast-like adenocarcinomas of the vulva. Adenocarcinomas, originating from Bartholin glands, can also present as vulvar adenocarcinoma. Rare adenocarcinomas with apocrine features have been described in the literature. The origin of these neoplasms from the native apocrine sweat glands or from anogenital mammary-like glands is still debatable. We report he

Management of a xeroderma pigmentosum case with oral findings in a dental setup.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is heterogeneous group of disorder transmitted as autosomal recessive trait. It is characterised by photosensitivity, freckled pigmentation and premature skin ageing and malignant tumour development. The manifestations are due to a cellular hypersensitivity to ultraviolet light resulting from a defect in DNA repair. Multiple cutaneous neoplasms develop at a young age in persons with XP. Two important causes of mortality are metastatic malignant melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We report a case of XP in a 22 year-old male patient who developed SCC of lower

Mismatch repair system proteins in oral benign and malignant lesions.

Different environmental agents may cause DNA mutations by disrupting its double-strand structure; however, even normal DNA polymerase function may synthesize mismatch nucleotide bases, occasionally demonstrating failure in its proofreading activity. To overcome this issue, mismatch repair (MMR) system, a group of proteins specialized in finding mispairing bases and small loops of insertion or deletion, works to avoid the occurrence of mutations that could ultimately lead to innumerous human diseases. In the last decades, the role of MMR proteins in oral carcinogenesis and in the development of

Salivary gland tumours as second neoplasms: two cases and literature review.

OBJECTIVES: Patients who survive malignant tumours have an increased risk of second neoplasms, including those of the salivary glands. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland is by far the most common type of second salivary gland tumour; other types have rarely been reported. We describe here two patients with a second tumour of the salivary glands. CASE REPORTS: The first patient was a 22-year-old woman with a low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland, which developed 21 years after completion of chemoradiotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The second patient was

Report of two cases of quintuple primary malignancies and review of the literature.

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPMN) are not uncommon, however, finding more than three primary malignancies in one individual is unusual. Surviving five malignancies is considered exceptional. Two patients surviving five primary malignant neoplasms for 12 and 18 years are reported: a 55-year-old woman with a squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx, two carcinomas of the breast, a carcinoma of the kidney and an adenocarcinoma of the colon, and a 75-year-old woman with a sarcoma of the myometrium, a carcinoma of the thyroid, an adenocarcinoma of the rectum, a leiomyosarcoma of the colon an

Lack of Epstein-Barr virus infection in cervical carcinomas.

CONTEXT: The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous microorganism strongly associated with lymphoproliferative disorders and a large number of human neoplasms, mainly undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma and Burkitt lymphoma. The viral DNA has been detected in other tumors, such as carcinomas from tonsil, salivary glands, and thymus, and malignancies of the female genital tract. Some authors have proposed that EBV could play a role in the carcinogenesis of cervical tumors; however, other studies do not support this hypothesis. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether EBV is associated with female
