Event-related potential dynamics of unilateral lower limb movement with functional connectivity analysis.

BACKGROUND: Locomotor lateralization represents a general evolutionary trait in primates and is particularly well documented in human upper limb movements. Whether a corresponding lateralization pattern exists in lower limb movements, however, has remained largely unexplored. NEW METHOD: To address this question, electroencephalographic (EEG) signals were recorded from 15 healthy volunteers while they performed instructed foot‑lift tasks under both motor execution (ME) and motor imagery (MI) conditions. The study characterized the frequency‑domain network representation of lower limb movement

Relationship between spontaneous EEG oscillations at 7 and 45 days of acute plateau exposure and the plateau acclimatization index.

INTRODUCTION: This study tracked 47 high-altitude migrants to investigate the adaptive mechanisms of the brain to hypoxic environments. METHODS: EEG and physiological indicators (SpO2, HCT, AAI) were recorded during the acute (7 days) and chronic (45 days) phases of high-altitude exposure. EEG complexity was assessed using multiscale entropy (MSE), and inter-regional brain coupling was also analyzed. RESULTS: Compared with the chronic phase, EEG complexity in the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes was higher in the acute phase, whereas inter-regional brain coupling was stronger in the ch

Evidence from EEG of Abnormal Functional Connectivity and Microstates in GAD and PD.

Panic disorder (PD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are among the most prevalent anxiety disorders (ADs), yet their neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to characterize EEG microstate patterns and their functional connectivity (FC) in patients with GAD and PD to explore the neural mechanisms underlying anxiety symptoms. Resting-state EEG was collected from 35 patients with PD, 31 patients with GAD, and 39 healthy controls (HCs). Four microstate classes (A-D) were selected to calculate the parameters, including the mean duration, time coverage, occurrence, mean global field

Selective attenuation of neural responses to own infant's face in early motherhood: a longitudinal magnetoencephalography study.

The transition to parenthood is associated with heightened neural responsiveness to infant cues, particularly to one's own infant. Yet it remains unclear how this sensitivity changes with caregiving experience. Magnetoencephalography was recorded from 16 first-time mothers viewing images of their own infant, an unfamiliar infant, and an unfamiliar adult at two time points spanning infancy and early toddlerhood. We examined early orbitofrontal activity (∼140 ms), structural face encoding (M170, ∼170 ms), and later motivated attention indexed by the late positive potential (LPP, ∼300-600 ms). So

Robust and Efficient Neural Architecture Design via Implicit Euler Explicitization.

Modeling deep neural networks as continuous-time dynamical systems has emerged as a powerful approach for analyzing their evolution and robustness. By leveraging the superior numerical stability of implicit methods, several studies have proposed the implicit Euler-based architecture, which significantly enhances both robustness and generalization under adversarial attack. However, existing methods require solving implicit equations iteratively, which substantially increases the computational cost. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes an explicit reformulation of the implicit Eule

First-person spoken narratives elicit consistent event structures in the angular gyrus.

Event segmentation theory explains how we parse a stream of continuous information into meaningful event models. Narratives are useful stimuli for studying this phenomenon, as the flow of information and the way we make meaning of them mirrors how we comprehend and make sense of our daily lives. Many studies have investigated the segmentation of audiovisual stimuli, such as movies, but only a handful of studies focused on how the brain parses auditory-only narrative. Using two stories with rich narrative features, we asked participants to listen to the story-recordings while being scanned with

Prediction of acoustic tinnitus suppression using resting-state EEG via explainable AI approach.

Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound without an external source. Its perceptual suppression or on/off states remain poorly understood. This study investigates neural traits linked to brief acoustic tinnitus suppression (BATS) using naive resting-state EEG (closed eyes) from 102 individuals. A set of EEG features (band power, entropy, aperiodic slope and offset of the EEG spectrum, and connectivity) and standard classifiers were applied achieving consistent high accuracy across data splits: 98% for sensor and 86% for source models. The Random Forest model outperformed other classifier

Preoperative Evaluation of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: The Relevance of Routine Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Introduction The evidence for using preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the whole spine in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is not well established. However, it is routine to perform whole-spine MRI in patients with scoliosis who are scheduled to undergo surgical correction in our center to detect occult neural axis abnormalities that may not present with neurological symptoms but could influence surgical planning and safety. Method A retrospective single-center and descriptive evaluation of the medical records of AIS patients aged 10 to 18 who were admit

Monkeypox virus spreads from cell-to-cell and leads to neuronal death in human neural organoids.

In 2022-23, the world witnessed the largest recorded outbreak of monkeypox virus (MPXV). Neurological manifestations were reported alongside the detection of MPXV DNA and MPXV-specific antibodies in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients. Here, we analyze the susceptibility of neural tissue to MPXV using human neural organoids (hNOs) exposed to a clade IIb isolate. We report susceptibility of several cell types to the virus, including neural progenitor cells and neurons. The virus efficiently replicates in hNOs, as indicated by the exponential increase of infectious viral titers and establishment

Motor versus Psychomotor? Deciphering the Neural Source of Psychomotor Retardation in Depression.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by psychomotor retardation whose underlying neural source remains unclear. Psychomotor retardation may either be related to a motor source like the motor cortex or, alternatively, to a psychomotor source with neural changes outside motor regions, like input regions such as visual cortex. These two alternative hypotheses in main (n = 41) and replication (n = 18) MDD samples using 7 Tesla MRI are investigated. Analyzing both global and local connectivity in primary motor cortex (BA4), motor network and middle temporal visual cortex complex (MT+),

Effect of Photobiomodulation Therapy on Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Impacted Third Molar Tooth into Neuron-like Cells.

Peripheral nerve damages are among the most important consequences of dental and maxillofacial procedures. Tissue engineering using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is a promising method to manage such injuries. Moreover, photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) can enhance this treatment. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of PBMT on differentiation of MSCs derived from dental follicle (DF) into neurons. MSCs were isolated from an impacted tooth follicle by digestion method. The stem cells were cultured, and differentiated into neurons. The cells received two sessions of PBMT with 810 or

The Role of Ellis-Van Creveld 2(EVC2) in Mice During Cranial Bone Development.

EvC syndrome is a type of autosomal-recessive chondrodysplasia. Previous case studies in patients suggest abnormal craniofacial development, in addition to dwarfism and tooth abnormalities. To investigate how craniofacial development is affected in EvC patients, surface models were generated from micro-CT scans of control mice, Evc2 global mutant mice and Evc2 neural crest-specific mutant mice. The anatomic landmarks were placed on the surface model to assess the morphological abnormalities in the Evc2 mutants. Through analyzing the linear and angular measurements between landmarks, we identif

"Who is talking to me?" - Self-other attribution of auditory hallucinations and sulcation of the right temporoparietal junction.

Brain imaging research in schizophrenia has provided a better understanding of the neural basis of auditory hallucinations (AH). Recently, renewed interest in the phenomenology of AH raised questions related to their neural substrates. Hence, the neural basis of AH self/other attribution have yet to be investigated as beliefs regarding the origin of the voices is a cardinal feature of AH phenomenology. As the right temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) play a key role in disentangling the origin of sensory events and in self/other distinction, we tested the hypo
