[Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome: A case report].

Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome (BRBS) is a rare disease, characterized by multiple vascular malformations in the skin and gastrointestinal tract. Other organs can also be affected, presenting different clinical manifestations such as arthralgia, epistaxis, hemoptysis, hematuria, hemothorax, mild thrombocytopenia, consumptive coagulopathy, and bone deformities, among others. We present a case of BRBS in a nine-year-old boy with the characteristic clinical manifestations of punctated purplish-blue skin lesions that vary in size and gastrointestinal vascular malformations with upper digestive tr…

Speckled lentiginous nevus syndrome associated with musculoskeletal abnormalities.

Speckled lentiginous nevus syndrome is a recently described neurocutaneous disorder characterized by speckled lentiginous nevus in association with hyperhidrosis, skin dysesthesia, and muscular weakness in an ipsilateral manner. We report a 9-year-old boy with a large speckled lentiginous nevus on his trunk, bilateral upper extremities, and neck associated with hyperhidrosis and nonspecific pain in the distribution of the nevus in addition to prominent upper extremity asymmetry and scoliosis. Similar musculoskeletal abnormalities have been reported in patients with phacomatosis pigmentovascula…

Epidermal nevus syndrome with azygos anterior cerebral artery.

Epidermal nevus syndrome is a neurocutaneous disorder characterized by the association of epidermal nevi with central nervous system or skeletal abnormalities. Central nervous system abnormalities include hemimegalencephaly, hydrocephalus, various migration disorders, intraspinal lipomas, and enlarged spinal roots. Rarely, vascular anomalies cause neurologic signs. We report on a 30-month-old girl with epidermal nevus syndrome who also exhibited vascular malformations of the azygos anterior cerebral artery, a cortical aneurysm, and right internal carotid artery hypoplasia. This rare vascular a…

Blue rubber-bleb nevus syndrome: a case report.

Blue rubber-bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is an uncommon systemic disorder characterized by cutaneous and visceral cavernous hemangiomas. The characteristic rubbery textured and easily compressible lesions usually present in childhood and predominate cutaneously over the trunk and extremities. Gastrointestinal foci appear most commonly in the small bowel, a site that appears to dominate visceral involvement. We review the case of a 23-year-old white woman, whose numerous lesions on her trunk, extremities, and oral mucosa had been present since childhood.

Basal cell nevus syndrome: guidelines for early detection.

Basal cell nevus syndrome is an autosomal dominant condition with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. It is characterized by five major components, including multiple nevoid basal cell carcinomas, jaw cysts, congenital skeletal abnormalities, ectopic calcifications, and plantar or palmar pits. Other features include a host of benign tumors, ocular defects, and cleft lip and palate. Guidelines for diagnosis include a family history, careful oral and skin examinations, chest and skull radiographs, panoramic radiographs of the jaw, magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, and pelvic ul…

Complex limbal choristomas in linear nevus sebaceous syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the clinical and histopathologic findings in four patients with complex limbal choristomas associated with linear nevus sebaceous syndrome (LNSS), a rare disorder including nevus sebaceous, seizures, and mental retardation, and often accompanied by ocular anomalies. DESIGN: Small observational case series. METHODS: A retrospective review of the clinical and histopathologic records of four patients. RESULTS: Each of four patients had complex limbal choristomas in the setting of clinical and histopathologic LNSS. The limbal choristomas were multiple in …

Epidermal nevus syndrome: subgroup with neuronal migration defects.

Epidermal nevus syndrome is one of the sporadic congenital hamartoses in which neurologic abnormalities have been frequently reported. We report two cases with severe primary brain involvement, seizures, mental retardation, and facial hemihypertrophy. We emphasize the superiority of magnetic resonance imaging over other radiographic studies in outlining the primary central nervous system anomalies associated with this syndrome. Although attempts were made to distinguish between several variants of epidermal nevus syndrome, it is clear that these are one entity. Proteus syndrome, encephalocrani…

Pityrosporum ovale/orbiculare in papillomatous nevus cell nevi.

62% of 200 papillomatous nevus cell nevi compared to 45% of 40 seborrheic keratoses showed the presence of Pityrosporum ovale/orbiculare (Malassezia furfur) on their surface, supposedly representing a saprophytic state of the microorganisms in vivo. The papillomatous nevus cell nevi were of the compound or dermal type. Significant inflammation, dysplasia or major changes in color were absent. Electron microscopy revealed the characteristic, sometimes budding fungal cells. A relationship between the presence of Pityrosporum organisms and papillomatosis is discussed.

[Late Becker's nevus. One hundred cases (author's transl)].

The authors make a survey of a series of a hundred Becker's nevi diagnosed in a recruiting center of the French National Service. It is a statistic study bearing on the male population, aged 17 to 26, in a French region which is supposed to be representative of the French male population of the same age. First of all the authors focus on the various clinical descriptions since this nevus was first described by Becker in 1949, then discuss the problems raised by pathogenic interpretation and the results of microscopic studies. About this lesion, usually said to be pigmentary and hairy, and gene…

Facial hemihypertrophy associated with nevus unius lateris syndrome.

A review of the clinical characteristics and etiologic theories of nevus unius lateris and associated facial hemihypertrophy is presented. A case report with significant medical and dental findings is discussed in light of the significant social and physical impairment resulting from oral hemihypertrophy and other physical deformities.

Ichthyosis hystrix (epidermal nevus syndrome) and Coats' disease.

A 4-year-old girl had the ichthyosis hystrix variant of the epidermal nevus syndrome with ocular fundus manifestations of Coats' disease. Her hearing was impaired because of serous otitis media and her visual acuity decreased because of hard yellow exudate in the macula as a result of decompensation and plasma leakage from the peripheral retinal vascular anomalies. Treatment of the vascular malformations with cryotherapy resulted in a reabsorption of the retinal edema and hard yellow exudate.

Unilateral, linear, zosteriform epidermal nevus with acantholytic dyskeratosis.

An infant has a nevus unius lateris with the histopathologic condition of acantholytic dyskeratosis. Similar cases have, in the past, been classified as unilateral Darier's disease. Since it is now recognized that the pathologic changes of acantholytic dyskeratosis are not specific for a given disease entity, we believe the concept of unilateral keratosis follicularis deserves reevaluation.
