BACKGROUND: Health-care services are necessary for sustaining and improving human wellbeing, yet they have an environmental footprint that contributes to environment-related threats to human health. Previous studies have quantified the carbon emissions resulting from health care at a global level. We aimed to provide a global assessment of the wide-ranging environmental impacts of this sector.
METHODS: In this multiregional input-output analysis, we evaluated the contribution of health-care sectors in driving environmental damage that in turn puts human health at risk. Using a global supply-c

Nitrogen-doped microporous carbon spheres (NMCSs) are successfully prepared via carbonization and KOH activation of phenol-formaldehyde resin polymer spheres synthesized by a facile and time-saving one-step hydrothermal strategy using triblock copolymer Pluronic F108 as a soft template under the Stöber-like method condition. The influence of the ethanol/water volume ratios and carbonation temperatures on the morphologies, pore structures and electrochemical performances of the prepared NMCSs are investigated systematically. The optimal NMCSs have a large specific surface area of 1517 m2 g- 1 w

The transplantation, engraftment, and expansion of primary hepatocytes have the potential to be an effective therapy for metabolic disorders of the liver including those of nitrogen metabolism. To date, such methods for the treatment of urea cycle disorders in murine models has only been minimally explored. Arginase deficiency, an inherited disorder of nitrogen metabolism that presents in the first two years of life, has the potential to be treated by such methods. To explore the potential of this approach, we mated the conditional arginase deficient mouse with a mouse model deficient in fumar

Following recurrence, the cornerstone clinical therapy to treat prostate cancer (PCa) is to inhibit the androgen receptor (AR) signaling. While AR inhibition is initially successful, tumors will eventually develop treatment resistance and evolve into lethal castration-resistant PCa. To discover new anti-metabolic treatments for PCa, a high-throughput anti-metabolic drug screening was performed in PC3 cells, an AR-negative PCa cell line. This screening identified the dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) enzyme as a metabolic vulnerability, using both AR-positive and AR-negative models, includin

Carbamyl phosphate synthetase I (CPSI) determines the rate-limiting entry of free ammonia into the urea cycle. Disruption of CPSI affects the liver's ability to remove waste nitrogen and produce arginine, citrulline, and urea. Arginine is the necessary precursor for the critical biomolecule, nitric oxide (NO). We have studied the classic model of CPSI deficiency, which results in severe hyperammonemia, and identified a large number of molecular defects. A number of CPSI polymorphisms have been found that appear to result in functional consequences. We have examined the association of these pol

The electrochemical performance of the Zn anode in a water-based electrolyte is influenced by the Zn anode/electrolyte interface. In the present work, a distinctive interfacial chemistry is enabled by introducing synergistic "cling-cover-capture" effects of different components in aspartame (APM) molecule, which can be described in detail as clinging to the surface of Zn anode by incompletely coordinated nitrogen and oxygen atoms in the main chain, covering the surface by the benzene rings and capturing Zn2+ by the side chains. Benefiting from its triple effects, this steady anode/electrolyte

The development of sustainable catalysts to get methanol from CO2 under milder conditions and without any additives is still considered an arduous task. In many instances, transition-metal-catalyzed carbon dioxide to formic acid formation is more facile than methanol formation. This article provides comprehensive density functional theoretic investigations of six new Mn(I)PNN complexes, which are designed to perform CO2 to methanol conversion under milder reaction conditions. All these six catalysts have similar structural features except at terminal nitrogen, -N (1), where adenine-inspired ni

Microplastics (MPs), as emerging global pollutants, may disrupt agricultural ecosystems and affect crop growth and development. To clarify the impact of MPs on the soil-maize system, this study investigated the effects of traditional non-degradable MPs [polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)] and biodegradable MPs [polylactic acid (PLA)] on rhizosphere soil nutrient content, organic acids, enzyme activity, as well as maize height and biomass. The results showed that the addition of conventional MPs reduced rhizosphere soil total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), dissolved organic c

Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) comprise one of the few prokaryotic groups in which biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is common. Recent studies have highlighted SRB roles in N cycling, particularly in oligotrophic coastal and benthic environments where they could contribute significantly to N input. Most studies of SRB have focused on sulfur cycling and SRB growth models have primarily aimed at understanding the effects of electron sources, with N usually provided as fixed-N (nitrate, ammonium). Mechanistic links between SRB nitrogen-fixing metabolism and growth are not well understood, parti

Biogas utilized for energy production needs to be free from organic silicon compounds, as their burning has damaging effects on turbines and engines; organic silicon compounds in the form of siloxanes can be found in biogas produced from urban wastes, due to their massive industrial use in synthetic product, such as cosmetics, detergents and paints. Siloxanes removal from biogas can be carried out by various methods (Mona, 2009; Ajhar et al., 2010 May; Schweigkofler and Niessner, 2001); aim of the present work is to find a single practical and economic way to drastically and simultaneously red

We examined the effects of nutrient amendments on epilimnetic freshwater bacteria during three distinct periods in the eutrophic Lake Mendota's seasonal cycle (spring overturn, summer stratification and autumn overturn). Microcosm treatments enriched solely with phosphorus containing compounds did not result in a large bacterial community composition (BCC) change or community activity response (assessed via alkaline phosphatase activity, APA) relative to the controls during any season. Treatments enriched with carbon- and nitrogen-containing compounds resulted in a dramatic BCC change and a la

Epidemiological studies have established a correlation between prenatal nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposure and the incidence of respiratory diseases in offspring. However, the sex-specific outcomes of respiratory system development, critical risk windows, and underlying epigenetic mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we established a prenatal NO2 exposure model and found that prenatal NO2 exposure induced pulmonary dysfunction and structural abnormalities in neonatal offspring (particularly airflow limitation, airway obstruction, and alveolar development) and impaired airway secretory functi

Fleet electrification shifts emission sources from the tailpipe to electricity generation and automotive supply chains subsequently, with emission transfer among regions. Such a spatial and cross-sectoral transfer of air pollutant emissions might embody uncertain environmental benefits spatially, which has not been comprehensively quantified, mainly due to the complexity of manufacturing processes of electric vehicle (EV) components (e.g., battery). We developed a hybrid life cycle assessment by combining inventory data of major processes and cross-sectoral input-output information and identif

The rich content of nutrients in human waste provides an outlook for turning it from pollutants to potential resources. The pilot-scale resource-oriented toilet with forward osmosis technology was demonstrated to have advantages to recover clean water, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, biogas, and heat from urine and feces. For the possibility of further full-scale implementation in different scenarios, six resource-oriented toilet systems and one conventional toilet system were designed in this study. The methodology of cost-benefit analysis and life cycle assessment were applied to analyze th

The development of gene-replacement therapy for inborn errors of metabolism has been hindered by the limited number of suitable large-animal models of these diseases and by inadequate methods of assessing the efficacy of treatment. Such methods should provide sensitive detection of expression in vivo and should be unaffected by concurrent pharmacologic and dietary regimens. We present the results of studies in a neonatal bovine model of citrullinemia, an inborn error of urea-cycle metabolism characterized by deficiency of argininosuccinate synthetase and consequent life-threatening hyperammone

Chronic (continuous, non-interrupted) hypoxia and cycling (intermittent, transient) hypoxia are two types of hypoxia occurring in malignant tumors. They are both associated with the activation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) and nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), which induce changes in gene expression. This paper discusses in detail the mechanisms of activation of these two transcription factors in chronic and cycling hypoxia and the crosstalk between both signaling pathways. In particular, it focuses on the importance of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS) together w

In the nitrogen (N) cycle, nitrogenous compounds are chemically and biologically converted to various aqueous and gaseous N species. The 15N-labeling approach is a powerful culture-dependent technique to obtain insights into the complex nitrogen transformation reactions that occur in cultures. In the 15N-labeling approach, the fates of supplemented 15N- and/or unlabeled gaseous and aqueous compounds are tracked by mass spectrometry (MS) analysis, whereas MS analysis of aqueous N species requires laborious sample preparation steps and is performed using isotope-ratio mass spectrometry, which re

Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), essential for nitrogen retention in ecosystems, is traditionally considered a strictly anaerobic process. Challenging this, emerging evidence revealed robust DNRA activity under aerobic conditions, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, we elucidate the molecular basis of oxygen-tolerant DNRA driven by sulfide oxidation in a Mycobacterium-dominated system. Under fully aerobic conditions (dissolved oxygen >3 mg/L), this system converted 1.4-4.5 mmol of nitrate to ammonium per 100 mmol of sulfide oxidized, with efficiency
