Increased severity of multifocal renal arterial fibromuscular dysplasia in smokers.

Renal arterial fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a significant cause of renovascular hypertension, especially in younger females. Tobacco con … and angiograms were reviewed. Clinical and angiographic features were compared between smokers and non-smokers. Twenty-four subjects were smokers. At the time of diagnosis of FMD, smokers were of younger mean age than non-smokers (38.7 years vs 48.9 years, P < 0.01), had a shorter median history of hypertension (1.5 years vs 8.5 years, P < 0.05), and had a h …

Characteristics and prevalence of hardcore smokers attending UK general practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Smoking remains a public health problem and although unsolicited GPs' advice against smoking causes between one and three percent of smokers to stop, a significant proportion of smokers are particularly resistant to the notion of stopping smoking. These resistant smokers have been called "hardcore smokers" and although 16% of smokers in the community are hardcore, little is known about hardcore smokers presenting to primary care physicians. Consequently, this study reports the characteristics and prevalence of hardcore smokers attending UK GPs. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey us

Risk factors of duodenal ulcer bleeding: the role of smoking and nicotine.

Several studies have shown that cigarette smoking affects duodenal ulcer (DU) recurrence. To verify any correlation between smoking and complications of ulcer disease, we studied 33 DU smokers, 16 DU ex-smokers and 87 DU non-smokers for up to 48 months, recording age, sex, family history of ulcer, ulcer symptoms, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, length of DU history, alcohol consumption, smoking habit, relapses and bleeding episodes. Nicotine contents were also obtained for the type of cigarettes smoked. Statistics used were: Analysis of variance with Bonferroni's test. Pearson's chi-…

Prediction of the physiological dead space/tidal volume ratio during anaesthesia/IPPV from simple pre-operative tests.

It can be shown that the assumption of an arbitrary value for VDphys/VT during IPPV can lead to unacceptable degrees of hypo- or hyperventilation. We investigated 33 adult patients scheduled for major non-thoracic surgery, to see if any simple tests could be used to predict VDphys/VT during anaesthesia/IPPV. Fifteen were smokers and 18 non- or ex-smokers. The tests were spirometry, and the single breath tests for CO2 and for N2 (SBT-CO2: SBT-N2). Patients were ventilated during anaesthesia with a Servo Ventilator 900 B, and SBT-CO2 was recorded from a CO2 Analyzer 930. During anaesthesia/IPPV,

Smoking after heart transplantation: an underestimated hazard?

OBJECTIVE: Risk factors for the development of vasculopathy and malignancies as the most important causes of morbidity and mortality after h … ter transplantation (22/84 = 26%). Four patients confessed smoking after undergoing the blood test. Non-smokers were defined as denying it in the questionnaire and having CO-Mb levels < 2.5% in repeated measurements. All but one were smokers before heart transplantation. Mean consumption was 11 cigarettes per day. Five and 10 years survival was significantly …

The relationship between smoking and clinical outcome in ischemic stroke patients undergoing reperfusion therapy.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that smokers have higher recanalization rate, lower risk of cerebral hemorrhage and better prognosis than non-smokers (smoking paradox) after reperfusion therapy in patients with acute ischemic stroke (IS). This study aimed to assess the effects of smoking on recanalization, intracranial hemorrhage, and clinical outcomes in patients with acute IS following reperfusion therapy. METHODS: Patients were categorized into smokers and non-smokers, with data collected on types of reperfusion therapy, demographics, medication use, comorbidities, stroke etiology, mRS a…

Effect of smoking over one pack daily on implant healing and health: A cohort study.

BACKGROUND: This prospective cohort trial examines the effects of heavy smoking on peri-implant marginal bone loss (MBL) and implant survival rates over 15 months. METHODS: Thirty subjects, categorized as either smokers (more than 20 cigarettes daily for over 5 years) or non-smokers, were initially recruited with pocket depths ≤ 5 mm and at least one missing tooth. Urine cotinine assay was used to confirm smoking status. Implants were placed and restored after 4 months. Clinical, radiographic and stability variables were assessed at placement, 15, 24, and 67 weeks. Measurements included margi…

The changes of intrinsic connectivity contrast in young smokers.

Previous studies demonstrated that reward circuit plays an important role in smoking. The differences of functional and structural connectivity were found among several brain regions such as thalamus and frontal lobe. However, few studies focused on functional connectivity (FC) in whole-brain voxel level of young smokers. In this study, intrinsic connectivity contrast (ICC) was used to perform voxel-based whole-brain analyses in 55 young smokers and 55 matched non-smokers to identify brain regions with significant group differences. ICC results showed that the connectivity of young smokers in …

Tobacco withdrawal among opioid-dependent smokers.

Prevalence of cigarette smoking among opioid-dependent individuals is 6-fold that of the general U.S. adult population and their quit rates are notoriously poor. One possible reason for the modest cessation outcomes in opioid-dependent smokers may be that they experience more severe tobacco withdrawal upon quitting. In this secondary analysis, we evaluated tobacco withdrawal in opioid-dependent (OD) smokers versus smokers without co-occurring substance use disorders (SUDs). Participants were 47 methadone- or buprenorphine-maintained smokers and 25 non-SUD smokers who completed 1 of several 2-w

Elevated risk of lung cancer among Asian American women who have never smoked: an emerging cancer disparity.

Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality for most ethnic groups of Asian American women, including Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese Americans, a striking pattern given the exceedingly low prevalence of smoking among Asian American women in the general population. Recent research demonstrates that among Asian American women with a lung cancer diagnosis, the vast majority of patients have never smoked, a rate as high as 80% among Chinese and Asian Indian American women. Despite declining rates in lung cancer overall in the United States, rates among Asian American women who ha

Tobacco and Nicotine Use Among US Adult "Never Smokers" in Wave 4 (2016-2018) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study.

INTRODUCTION: A common criterion for being labeled a "never smoker" is having smoked <100 lifetime cigarettes. This category is often used as an unexposed reference group to estimate the relative harm from cigarettes. We examined the amount of current and past cigarette and non-cigarette tobacco/nicotine use among adults who met this "never smoker" criterion. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 17 179 adult "never smokers" (ie, reported <100 lifetime cigarettes) in Wave 4 (2016-2018) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, a United States nationally represe

Cigarette smoking may affect meiotic maturation of human oocytes.

There is a strong association between cigarette smoking and reduced fecundity, reduced fertility, and early mean age of menopause, suggesting that smoking may impair oocyte function and viability. We analysed the effect of smoking on meiotic maturation of oocytes. A total of 156 women undergoing in-vitro fertilization therapy, classified as non-smokers (n = 102), passive smokers (n = 21), light smokers (< 15 cigarettes/day; n = 19), and heavy smokers (> or = 15 cigarettes/day, n = 14), participated in this study. Tubal factor infertility was more frequent in smokers, in agreement with the lite…

The Impact of Smoking History on Outcomes and Morbidity After Robotic Hepatectomy.

INTRODUCTION: The detrimental effects that smoking has on patient health and postoperative morbidity are well documented. However, literature on the impact that smoking history has on robotic surgery, specifically robotic hepatectomy, is scarce. This study was undertaken to determine whether smoking history impacts the postoperative course of patients undergoing robotic hepatectomy. METHODS: We prospectively followed 353 patients that underwent robotic hepatectomy. 125 patients had an apposite history of smoking (ie, smokers) and 228 patients were classified as non-smokers. Data were presente…
