In those who are infected with human immunodeficiency virus, poor nutritional status can result from numerous causes, including anorexia, catabolism, chronic infection, fever, poor nutrient intake, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, malabsorption, metabolic disturbances, lack of access to food, depression, and side effects of drug, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments. A compromised immune system may not be reversed by any medical treatments at this time, but malnutrition may be prevented and reversed by using current therapies, including medical nutrition therapy that includes nutrition assessment

Malnutrition is reported in a significant percentage of COPD patients, and it may contribute to the onset of acute respiratory failure. Weight loss is due to the decrease of caloric support caused by breathlessness, digestive alterations due to hypoxemia and to the increase of energy expenditures caused by increased baseline requirements and diet induced thermogenesis (DIT). Malnutrition limits the ability to produce surfactant, leads to reduced protein synthesis, reduces cell mediated immune responses raising the patient's susceptibility to lung infection and affects the functioning of periph

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psychological illnesses, mood disorders, anger and violent behaviors, which are increasing at an alarming rate today, not only negatively affect human health but also pose a threat to social life and security. The extant literature indicates that mental illnesses (e.g., depression and anxiety), negative affect (e.g., unhappiness and anger), and antisocial behaviors are associated with an increased likelihood of criminal behavior. Therefore, treating psychological disorders, improving mood and transforming negative behaviors into positive behaviors seems to be a potential str

The term 'intestinal failure' is now often used to describe gastrointestinal function insufficient to satisfy body nutrient and fluid requirements. The first recognized condition of intestinal failure was short bowel syndrome. Severe motility disorders such as chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction syndrome in children as well as congenital intractable intestinal mucosa disorders are also forms of intestinal failure, because no curative treatment for these diseases is yet available. Parenteral nutrition and home parenteral nutrition remain the mainstay of therapy for intestinal failure, whether

Growth failure is a common problem in many children with chronic diseases. This article is an overview of the most common causes of growth failure/growth retardation that affect children with a number of chronic diseases. We also briefly review the nutrition considerations and treatment goals. Growth failure is multifactorial in children with chronic conditions, including patients with cystic fibrosis, chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease, congenital heart disease, human immunodeficiency virus, inflammatory bowel disease, short bowel syndrome, and muscular dystrophies. Important contr

Nutritional depletion is a common feature of inflammatory bowel disease. The advent of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) has allowed nutritional repletion or maintenance while total bowel rest is achieved. The experience with total parenteral nutrition in inflammatory bowel disease is varied; our recommendations for use of total parenteral nutrition in specific situations are presented with a description of the techniques for administration in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

The goals of manual-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and nutritional counseling for eating disorders are similar, namely, eliminating dysfunctional patterns of eating. Modifying these behaviors requires specific therapeutic expertise in the principles and procedures of behavior change that is not typically part of the training of nutritionists and dieticians or mental health professionals without specific expertise. We discuss ways in which principles of behavior change can be applied to eating disorders by non-CBT experts. Specific nutritional rehabilitation programs have the potentia

Malnutrition and growth failure are frequent complications of inflammatory bowel disease in childhood owing to inadequate dietary nutrient intakes, excessive intestinal losses, malabsorption, and increased nutrient requirements. Aggressive nutritional therapy is indicated for primary and supportive management of disease activity, drug nutrient interactives, individual nutrient abnormalities, and the overall complications of inflammatory bowel disease, malnutrition, and growth failure. The prevention of nutritional disorders in inflammatory bowel disease is accomplished by monitoring anthropome

Hurricanes and other natural disasters can produce crop destruction, population displacement, infrastructure damage, and long-term public health consequences that include increased malnutrition among the affected populations. This paper presents the results of anthropometric measurements taken of 295 children under 5 years of age from three regions of Honduras that were affected by Hurricane Mitch, a major storm that struck Central America in the fall of 1998. The children in our study were sampled in three shelters in the capital city of Tegucigalpa; in the resettlement zone of Nueva Cholutec

PURPOSE: Migraine is a highly prevalent headache disorder, and intake of various nutrients and special diets may improve migraine symptoms. We aimed to clarify the association between nutritional status and migraine.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We collected the data of 1838/8953 (migraineurs/all participants) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2004 cycle. We used weighted multivariable linear or logistic regression analyses to study the association between the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and the occurrence of severe headache or migraine.
RESULTS: After a

Tumours of the upper aerodigestive tract cause malnutrition in the majority of ENT cancer patients. This situation is complicated by multimodal treatment regimens (including surgery and/or irradiation). The resulting malnutrition is a disease entity in its own right and requires special treatment concepts. Effective screening tools (NRS 2002) need to be introduced and data such as body mass index and bioimpedance analysis need to be gathered. The nutrition plan for individual ENT patients differs according to the grade of malnutrition and dysphagia. Oral nutrition should always form the basis

Diet-induced undernutrition causes deleterious changes in the structure and function of the diaphragm muscle. Diseases associated with somatic washing cause atrophy of the respiratory muscles. In cachectic subjects, the diaphragm muscle mass and thickness are reduced in proportion to the reduction in body weight. In addition, respiratory muscle strength and endurance are reduced more dramatically than the weight loss. This finding suggests that malnutrition induces a reduction in muscular mass which is associated with a decrease in contractility. Diaphragmatic weakness may increase the risk of

Major trauma often precipitates major malnutrition. In many patients, this malnutrition underlies the morbidity and mortality associated with major injury, often leading to multiple organ failure and refractory sepsis. The clinical challenge is to anticipate these potential nutritional problems and intervene early and appropriately, recognizing that it is far easier to prevent malnutrition than it is to reverse it.

OBJECTIVE: Tobacco consumption among low- and middle-income countries where food insecurity remains a challenge poses several concerns. This review examines the available global evidence linking smokeless tobacco (SLT) use with public health nutrition and its implications.
DESIGN: Systematic review of articles extracted from PubMed and Scopus from January 2000 to December 2020.
SETTING: Included studies that demonstrated the relationship between SLT and nutrition-related factors, that is, BMI, malnutrition, anaemia, poor birth outcomes and metabolic disorders. Preferred Reporting Items for S

The global prevalence of metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases is closely related to overnutrition and imbalanced dietary patterns. As an important carbohydrate, starch directly affects the homeostasis of glucose and lipid metabolism due to its digestion characteristics. Resistant starch (RS) with unique anti-digestive properties and prebiotic functions has become the current hotspot in dietary nutrition research for improving glucose and lipid metabolism disorders. This review summarizes the digestive characteristics of starch and the comprehensive effects
