The forensic dentist can estimate the age of an individual by observing the developing dentition. Systematic observations can provide accurate age estimations depending of the criteria used and the experience and training of the dentist. Anatomical, histological, and radiographic examinations of the teeth are of great value. Admittedly, some of the aforementioned methods are complicated and require prolonged time periods to perform. Alternative methods of age estimation may be required when rapid results are demanded by the police or other agencies. It is, however, the obligation of the forens

BACKGROUND: Platelet concentrates combined with calcium silicate cements may promote reparative dentin formation. However, few studies have … BP Plus extract, whereas IL-4 and IL-10 showed the opposite expression patterns. Expression of the odontogenesis-related genes OCN, Runx2, and ALP was dramatically enhanced by combined treatment with CGF and iRoot BP Plus extract. In rat pulp, the average inflammation scores of the CGF and CGF-iRoot BP Plus groups significantly decreased in comparison with tho …

Ameloblasts responsible for enamel formation express matrix metalloproteinase 20 (MMP20), an enzyme that cleaves enamel matrix proteins, including amelogenin (AMELX) and ameloblastin (AMBN). Previously, we showed that continuously erupting incisors from transgenic mice overexpressing active MMP20 had a massive cell infiltrate present within their enamel space, leading to enamel mineralization defects. However, effects of MMP20 overexpression on mouse molars were not analyzed, although these teeth more accurately represent human odontogenesis. Therefore, MMP20-overexpressing mice ( Mmp20+/+Tg+)…

OBJECTIVES: Molar-root incisor malformation (MRIM) is a seldom reported condition characterised by disturbances in root development of first permanent molars. This systematic review aimed to collate the clinical characteristics of individuals diagnosed with MRIM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search strategy using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases was performed through to March 2023. Inclusion criteria were case reports or case series including a diagnosis consistent with MRIM. Critical appraisal for all included studies utilised the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) crit

OBJECTIVE: In children with Down syndrome, the timing of dental eruption is important for orthodontics treatment planning. Aim of this study was to determine whether tooth eruption and development of the dentition in children with Down syndrome are impaired.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Dental development was scored on orthopantomograms (OPTs) of 95 children with Down syndrome. The dental age was determined at the left mandibular side according to the Demirjian method and by converting the assigned scores to the dental maturity score. Dental development scores of control children and DS children wer

The tooth root is an important part of the tooth that works together with the surrounding periodontium to maintain the tooth in the alveolar socket. The root develops after crown morphogenesis. While the molecular and cellular mechanisms of early tooth development and crown morphogenesis have been extensively studied, little is known about the molecular mechanisms controlling tooth root formation. Here, we show that β-catenin is strongly expressed in odontoblast-lineage cells and is required for root formation. Tissue-specific inactivation of β-catenin in developing odontoblasts produced molar

Teeth are typical examples of organs in which genes determine the progress of development from initiation to the final shape, size and structure, whereas environmental factors play a minor role. Advances in gene technology over the last three decades have led to powerful novel methods to explore the mechanisms of embryonic development. Today we know a few hundred genes that regulate tooth development, and mutations in dozens of these genes have been shown to cause aberrations in tooth development in mice and/or humans. The functions of an increasing number of genes in tooth development have be

AIM: The findings of a clinical-radiological review of 467 children attending the Oral Diagnosis Clinic of the Facultad de Odontología, UNAM, Mexico, are presented.
METHODS: All patients were clinically reviewed, clinical history was taken, and an orthopantomogram obtained by last year dentistry students. Patients and radiographs were then reviewed by the panel and all alterations in teeth, soft tissues and bone were recorded.
RESULTS: Clinical and/or radiographic alterations were found in 132 (28.26%) children. The main alterations were developmental (75%) and inflammatory/infectious and tr

Tooth eruption at the early postnatal period is strictly controlled by the molecules secreted mainly from follicular tissues, which recruit monocytes for osteoclast formation. In this study, it was hypothesized that different molecules can be expressed according to the stages of tooth eruption. Rat molar germs together with follicles were extracted and DD-PCR was performed from the root formation stage 2nd molars germs (after eruptive movement) and cap stage 3rd molar germs (before movement) at postnatal day 9. Cxcl-14, a potent chemoattractant, was detected as one of the differentially expres

Developmental orofacial dentoalveolar complications associated with chemoradiotherapy in an 8 year old child with a history of rhabdomyosarcoma are reported. This report details, clinically and radiographically, these effects in a child diagnosed at 3 years of age with a lesion primary to the left buccinator. Early evaluation is vital to determine potential dentoalveolar complications and long-term consequences.

AIM: Tooth agenesis is characterised by the congenital absence of one or more teeth. The Pax9 gene has been associated with nonsyndromic forms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To investigate the molecular mechanisms, we evaluated specific haplotypes frequency in exon 3 of the Pax9 gene in 26 patients and 21 controls, using an Italian population.
RESULTS: Presence of His239His and the Ala240Pro were confirmed in exon 3 of the Pax9 gene. A frequency of 20.2€ of the T allele at position 717 and a C frequency of 33€ of Ala240Pro polymorphism, that reached 40.5€ in the control group, were observed. The 39

Intake of excess amounts of fluoride during tooth development cause enamel fluorosis, a developmental disturbance that makes enamel more porous. In mild fluorosis, there are white opaque striations across the enamel surface, whereas in more severe cases, the porous regions increase in size, with enamel pitting, and secondary discoloration of the enamel surface. The effects of fluoride on enamel formation suggest that fluoride affects the enamel-forming cells, the ameloblasts. Studies investigating the effects of fluoride on ameloblasts and the mechanisms of fluorosis are based on in vitro cult

Dental anomalies are caused by complex interactions between genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors during the long process of dental … milar phenotypes. Related to the action of a number of the developmental regulatory genes active in odontogenesis, in different tissues, mutations can result in syndromes of which dental anomalies are part. Disruption of the antagonistic balance between developmental regulatory genes, acting as activators or inhibitors can result in dental anomalies. There are …

Root fracture injuries affect 0.5-7% of permanent teeth. Although this type of injury is rarely seen in teeth with immature root formation, the prognosis is generally good depending on the site of the fracture. A case report of horizontal root fracture in maxillary central incisor of an 8-year and 3-month-old girl and its treatment was presented.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the response of the residual epithelial network following traumatic breakdown of the periodontal ligament (PDL).
METHODS: Mandibular incisor sections with PDL (experimental) and sections denuded of PDL (control) from 4- to 6-week-old Wistar-Furth rats were transplanted into the defects created in the frontal bone of the recipient syngeneic rats. At intervals, the defects with implanted teeth roots were collected and processed for histological and biochemical examination. Immunolocalization of epithelial cells was performed to monitor their phe
