Funnel chest, a congenital hereditary deformity, may lead to impairment of cardiopulmonary function. The predominant motives for operation are psychological and cosmetic. Patients with minor deformities amenable to physiotherapy should not be operated upon, but moderately severe defects justify surgical intervention. Objective photographic documentation is essential. Because of their importance to surgical technique and results, the symmetrical, asymmetrical, localized, and extensive deformities should be distinguished. Ninety operations were performed between 1951 and 1974 according to the va

Three British surgeons on a visit to Russia were impressed with the Russian technique known as "compression distraction" used mainly in the treatment of infected pseudarthrosis of the tibia. Multiple thick Kirschner wires drilled through the tibia at a distance from the lesion were fixed in stirrups attached to steel rods and turnbuckles. By adjustment of the apparatus deformity was corrected at the time of application; shortening was overcome by gradual turnbuckling. The equipment was also used for leg lengthening and for complicated recent injuries.

Cervical spine fracture-dislocation in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and severe thoracic kyphosis is extremely unstable. This study was performed to investigate the efficacy and safety of halo vest application before and during surgery for these patients. We retrospectively analyzed the case histories, operations, neurologic outcomes, follow-up data, and imaging records of 25 patients with AS and severe thoracic kyphosis who underwent surgical treatment of cervical fracture-dislocation in our department from 2008 to 2019. A halo vest was used to reduce and immobilize the fractured

OBJECTIVES: Many techniques have been described for screw fixation of the scaphoid bone. The approach is either proximal or dorsal. A new percutaneous technique is presented by the authors called the head to foot screw fixation. Indications and results are evaluated.
METHODS: It is a percutaneous technique with fixation of the scaphoid bone by two screws introduced in an opposite direction: a proximal screw and a distal screw. No postoperative immobilization was necessary. A prospective study was conducted in 40 patients over a period of three years. The average age was 25 years with extremes

The treatment of Pancoast (superior sulcus) tumors that extensively invade the vertebral column remains controversial. Different surgical approaches involving multistage resection techniques have been previously described for superior sulcus tumors that invade the chest wall and spinal column. Typically a posterior approach to stabilize the spine is followed by a second-stage thoracotomy (posterolateral or trap door) for definitive en bloc resection of stage T4 Pancoast tumors. The authors report and elaborate on a surgical technique successfully used for an en bloc resection as well as spinal

UNLABELLED: The goal of our systematic literature search was to prove whether the experimentally shown influence of osteoporosis on fracture fixation could be confirmed in clinical studies. Despite significant effects in several studies, this is not supported by pooled data due to lack of accurate osteoporosis assessment and complication definitions.
INTRODUCTION: The fact that osteoporosis causes fractures is well-known; the assumption that it aggravates their orthopaedic treatment has not been proven. The goal of our systematic literature search was to find out whether the experimentally pr

The power lawn mower is capable of inflicting serious injury, particularly to the pediatric population. A total of 27 patients who had sustained lawn-mower injuries were reviewed to identify those factors responsible for power-mower accidents and to determine an effective treatment regimen for these patients. The injuries included amputations in 19, major lacerations in 34, and fractures in 23 extremities. Aggressive treatment of both the soft tissue and bony injuries was necessary. Fractures were treated with either open reduction and internal fixation or external fixation, as appropriate, an

This method discussed by Kapandji (1976) in which pins are passed through the fracture line and not through the styloid process provides dynamic pinning in comminuted fractures in the adult resulting from compression and extension. No plaster is used. The authors report the experience of the unit of hand surgery in the Centre de Traumatologie et d'Orthopédie of Strasbourg (150 cases at present). They describe the technique and the indications.

A personal prospective study of 98 consecutive patients presenting with neurological impairment and fractures or dislocations between the 9th thoracic and 2nd lumbar vertebrae bodies. Fifty-three patients underwent Harrington instrumentation, and 45 patients were treated recumbently. Neurological improvement was much better following Harrington rods in the complete paraplegia group but there was no difference in neurological recovery between the two groups in those with incomplete paraplegia. Forty-two patients who had been stabilised with Harrington rods underwent post-operative myelography o

We evaluated 123 patients in which we treated 150 fractured fingers primarily. Sixty-seven percent of these fractured fingers required open reduction with internal fixation; the remainder had closed reduction with internal or external fixation, or immediate arthrodeses. Active and passive range-of-motion (ROM) exercises were usually begun within 3 days after injury. The active and passive ROM of all joints of each finger in the involved hand were measured at regular intervals until no further change in ROM occurred. An associated crush injury, a flexor or extensor tendon injury, or a skin loss

Biodegradable fixation devices made of the polymers polylactide, polyglycolide and their copolymers are used routinely during maxillofacial, craniofacial, and orthopedic reconstructive surgical procedures, thanks to their property of biodegradation that avoid the need for implant removal. In particular, they are used in the treatment of craniosynostosis in pediatric patients affected by Pfeiffer syndrome, where the resorption time of 1 year or less does not interfere with the normal growth of the skull. To study the mechanism how polylactide-polyglycolide (PLPG) acid plates can induce osteobla

Staphylococcus aureus has emerged as a major cause of implant infections. It is known that it is able to produce several toxins that contribute to its armory of virulent weapons, but there are still no data on their prevalence among isolates recovered from biomaterial-centered infections. In this study, 200 Staphylococcus aureus isolates from infections related to different types of orthopedic implants (hip and knee arthroprostheses, internal and external fixation devices) were tested by polymerase chain reaction for the prevalence of genes encoding for leukotoxins. Although almost all isolate

UNLABELLED: Magnesium (Mg) medical devices are currently being marketed for orthopedic applications and have a complex degradation process which includes the evolution of hydrogen gas (H2). The effect of H2 exposure on relevant cell types has not been studied; and the concentration surrounding degrading Mg devices has not been quantified to enable such mechanistic studies. A simple and effective method to measure the concentration of H2 in varying microenvironments surrounding Mg implants is the first step to understanding the biological impact of H2 on these cells. Here, the in vivo measureme

This study presents the development of titanium-based implants coated with zeolite layers for controlled delivery of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a polyphenolic compound with osteogenic, antiresorptive, and antibacterial properties. Zeolite coatings were modified with divalent ions (Zn2+, Mg2+, Ca2+) to investigate their influence on EGCG adsorption and release under neutral (pH 7.4, SBF) and acidic (pH 5.0, acetate buffer) conditions. Comprehensive characterization using SEM, EDS, FT-IR, UV-vis spectroscopy, and surface profilometry confirmed uniform zeolite formation, effective EGCG load

Orthopedic fractures have a significant impact on patients in the form of economic loss and functional impairment. Beyond the standard methods of reduction and fixation, one adjunct that has been explored since the late 1970s is electrical stimulation. Despite robust evidence for efficacy in the preclinical arena, human trials have mixed results, and this technology is not widely accepted. The purpose of this review is to examine the body of literature supporting electrical stimulation for the purpose of fracture healing in humans with an emphasis on device specifications and stimulation proto

To investigate the differences in biomechanical performance between the Bailey bridge screw fixation system derived from truss units and the conventional volar locking plate-screw fixation system in the treatment of type C distal radius fractures, and to explore a simpler and minimally invasive internal fixation configuration. Based on the radial CT data of a healthy female volunteer, a finite element model of type C distal radius fracture was established, and the plate-screw group (PS group) and the Bailey bridge screw group (FMB group) were assembled respectively, with 2.7 mm screws adopted
