BACKGROUND AND AIM: Cholesteatoma usually arises in the middle ear by the formation of a retraction pocket or a tympanic membrane perforation. In some cases, cholesteatoma presents behind an intact tympanic membrane (ITMC) and the underlying mechanism of its development is controversial. The aim of this study was to describe clinical features, pathogenesis and surgical results in a series of adult patients affected by ITMC.
METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively 27 adult patients (age > 18 years) diagnosed with ITMC who underwent surgery between 1994 and 2013. We investigated the demographic da

Our aim was to critically assess the influence of preoperative computed tomography (CT) scans on implantation decisions for adult cochlear implant candidates. The working hypothesis was that these routine scans might not provide critical additional information in most adult cochlear implant candidates. The charts of 175 adults with unilateral cochlear implantation were reviewed. Preoperative CT scan reports were audited, and scans with reported pathology were examined by an Otologist/ENT Surgeon. Clinic notes and multidisciplinary team meeting summaries were also analyzed to assess whether the

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: In this study, optical coherence tomography (OCT) is used to noninvasively and quantitatively determine tympanic membrane (TM) thickness and the presence and thickness of any middle-ear biofilm located behind the TM. These new metrics offer the potential to differentiate normal, acute, and chronic otitis media (OM) infections in pediatric subjects.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series with comparison group.
METHODS: The TM thickness of 34 pediatric subjects was acquired using a custom-built, handheld OCT system following a traditional otoscopic ear exam.
RESULTS: Overall thicknes

BACKGROUND: Spectral gradient acoustic reflectometry (SGAR) and tympanometry are handy methods to aid in the diagnostics of middle-ear diseases, but no prior studies have directly assessed the correlation between SGAR and tympanometry readings in children.
METHODS: We compared SGAR and tympanometry in 2152 otoscopic examinations among 600 children aged 0.6-14 years, who were examined for signs and symptoms of respiratory infection in a primary care setting; 677 (31.5%) of the ear examinations were in children <3 years of age. We further determined the test characteristics of these methods for

OBJECTIVE: Otic barotrauma (OBT) is an adverse event seen in patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy. After encountering a case of painless tympanic perforation during HBO2 therapy of a diabetic patient with the diagnosis of neuropathic Wagner Grade III foot ulcer, we hypothesized that peripheral neuropathy of the lower extremity may be associated with an increased risk of asymptomatic OBT during HBO2 therapy.
METHODS: The medical records of all HBO2 patients during a one-year period of time were reviewed. Subjects were selected based on otoscopic documentation of OBT and divided

OBJECTIVE: To review the literature on techniques for creation of chronic tympanic membrane perforations (TMP) in animal models. Establishing such models in a laboratory setting will have value if they replicate many of the properties of the human clinical condition and can thus be used for investigation of novel grafting materials or other interventions.
METHODS: A literature search of the PubMed database (1950-August 2014) was performed. The search included all English-language literature published attempts on chronic or delayed TMP in animal models. Studies of non English-language or acute

HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the effects of hyperandrogenism on otoacoustic emission levels and the medial olivocochlear reflex in adult female subjects.
BACKGROUND: Women have a hearing advantage over men. Otoacoustic emission levels tend to be higher in female subjects, in both newborns and adults. This discrepancy has been presumed to result from prenatal androgen exposure in male subjects.
METHODS: The study involved 37 polycystic ovary syndrome patients who were referred from the endocrinology department and 26 healthy volunteers. All participants who showed normal otoscopic findings, hearin

PURPOSE: Even though aural fullness is ubiquitous among patients presenting to otolaryngology clinics, the association between aural fullness and disease development has not yet been clearly determined.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study was performed on outpatients from June 2006 to February 2010 whose major complaint was "ear fullness", "aural fullness", or "ear pressure". We assessed their demographic and clinical characteristics, including sex, associated diseases, symptoms, otoscopic findings, audiology test results, and final diagnoses.
RESULTS: Among 432 patients, 165 (38.2%) were males

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the GJB2 gene are the most common cause of nonsyndromic autosomal recessive sensorineural hearing loss. A few mutations in GJB2 have also been reported to cause dominant nonsyndromic or syndromic hearing loss. However, de novo or dominant mutation in GJB2 is not common in Chinese populations.
METHODS: Two probands with hearing impairment from unrelated Chinese families are reported here. Temporal CT scan, complete physical (including skin and hair) and otoscopic examinations, and an audiological study, including tympanometry, auditory brainstem response (ABR), auditor
