Distinguishing lupus erythematosus panniculitis (LEP) from subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is a diagnostic challenge with important clinical implications. Immunohistochemical expression of interferon regulatory factor 8 (IRF8) has been shown to highlight cells with plasmacytoid dendritic cell differentiation. Considering that the presence of plasmacytoid dendritic cells highlighted by CD123 immunolabeling is a well-described feature that supports LEP over SPTCL, we hypothesized that IRF8 immunohistochemistry can be used as a diagnostic test to improve accuracy in differe…

An uncommon variation of lupus erythematosus is lupus panniculitis. İt can exist on its own or in conjunction with discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Persistent, sensitive, and hard nodules that are localized on the face, arms, shoulders, breast, and buttocks are its defining features. Scarring, lipoatrophy, and ulceration are occasionally associated with the healing of lesions. We are reporting the first case of lupus erythematosus panniculitis from Somalia. A 60-year-old male patient visited our polyclinic with an upper back nodule and a left upper ulcerated lesion that had been presen…

UNLABELLED: Panniculitis is a heterogeneous group of diseases that are characterized by a subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) lesion and frequently occur with involvement of the musculoskeletal system and viscera in the process. This is a chronic multiple organ disease. The gold standard for its diagnosis is noted to be a morphological study. The paper presents the current classification of panniculitis.
OBJECTIVE: To study the morphological features of idiopathic lobular panniculitis (ILP) in accordance with the nature of the course and clinical forms of the disease.
SUBJECT AND METHODS: Biop…

We report the first case of acute Vibrio cholerae infection with computed tomography (CT) changes consistent with mesenteric panniculitis (MP). A 78-year-old Indian man returned from overseas travel with progressively severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and watery diarrhea. His stool tested positive twice for Vibrio cholerae. CT revealed prominent lymph nodes and a hazy mesentery consistent with MP. Antibiotic treatment resulted in complete resolution of MP on follow-up CT 8 months later. In the setting of Vibrio cholerae infection, the CT finding of MP appears to be the result of a immun…

Post-steroid panniculitis (PSP) is a rare clinical entity which presents after rapid withdrawal of high doses of systemic corticosteroids. As few as 20 cases have been reported in literature till now. Here, we report a case of post-steroid panniculitis occurring in a 9-year-old boy after rapid tapering and discontinuation of corticosteroids administered for the treatment of nephrotic syndrome. He presented with multiple erythematous painful indurated nodules over the face, arms, forearms, thighs, and legs. Histopathologic examination of the nodule revealed lobular panniculitis with lymphocytes…

Mesenteric panniculitis is an uncommon benign inflammatory condition of unknown etiology that involves the adipose tissue of the mesentery and for which an extremely varied terminology has been used, causing considerable confusion. It can be evaluated as a single disease with two pathological subgroups: Mesenteric Panniculitis (MP), representing the very large major subgroup where inflammation and fat necrosis predominate and Retractile Mesenteritis (RM), much rarely found, where fibrosis and retraction predominate. In histo-pathological terms the preferred terminology is sclerosing mesenterit…

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare, benign and chronic fibrosing inflammatory disease that affects the adipose tissue of the mesentery of the small intestine and colon. The specific etiology of the disease is unknown. The diagnosis is suggested by computed tomography and is usually confirmed by surgical biopsies. Treatment is empirical and based on a few selected drugs. Surgical resection is sometimes attempted for definitive therapy, although the surgical approach is often limited. We report two cases of mesenteric panniculitis with two different presentations and subsequently varying treatmen…

BACKGROUND: A clinical picture of hypodermitis in the lumbar region may reveal an abscess arising from infection due to pyonephrosis. We report a case below.
CASE REPORT: A 58 year-old woman consulted for an area of inflammation in the left lumbar region that had been present for two months. The area of inflammation appeared two days after physiotherapy sessions prescribed for lower back pain. Laboratory examinations revealed inflammation associated with moderate renal failure. A skin biopsy sample taken from around the inflamed area showed septal hypodermitis. Ultrasound examination revealed

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is a rare cytotoxic T-cell lymphoma classified in the World Health Organization-European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (WHO-EORTC) classification as a unique extranodal lymphoma with characteristic by T cell receptor (TCR) gene rearrangement. We report here a case of SPTCL in a 22 year-old woman who had presented with variably sized multiple nodules on both her legs. Initial differential diagnoses considered were panniculitis and lupus panniculitis. The histopathology showed a predominantly subcutaneous lobular infiltra…

Fasciitis-panniculitis syndrome (FPS) is a condition characterized by inflammation of the subcutaneous cellular tissue, the aponeurosis and, eventually, the muscles. A 49-year-old female who was previously diagnosed as having retroperitoneal fibrosis presented recurrent episodes of intermittent inflammation of her limbs that simulated deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Biopsy revealed panniculitis with involvement of the fascia, characterizing FPS. Clinical improvement was achieved after corticosteroid therapy. Prompt recognition of FPS is important in order to avoid inadequate therapeutic measures…

INTRODUCTION: The term lipomembranous panniculitis refers to a chronic inflammation of the subcutaneous cell tissue, probably representing a non-specific type of ischemic necrosis of the fatty tissue, common to several complaints. It is characterized by painful sclerotic subcutaneous deposits, located in the lower legs of obese, middle-aged woman, with a history of vascular insufficiency and stasis dermatitis. The condition may also appear in association with other inflammatory disorders.
METHODS: This paper is a review of all cases of lipomembranous panniculitis diagnosed at the Skin Histopa…
