Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma: a diagnostic challenge in sinonasal lesions.

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) is a rare lesion in nasal cavity first reported by Wenig and Heffner in 1995. Most commonly seen in men in third to ninth decade of life. Majority of cases presents as a polypoidal mass in one or both nasal cavities. We experienced such a case of REAH originating from the nasal septum, in posterior aspect, treated by endoscopic approach. It is important to differentiate REAH from other sinonasal pathologies like inverted papilloma and low grade sinonasal adenocarcinoma. Complete surgical resection is the treatment of choice.

[Kaino-sinus syndrome: a case report].

Kaino-sinus syndrome is one new complication of endoscopic sinus surgery. The patient had an operation of endoscopic surgery, because he was suffered from an illness of frontal nasal inverted papilloma again. After operation he was suffering pain in left epicanthal folds and frontal part, and had dry scab in nasal cavity when he breathed cold air. The symptoms could relieve by blocking prenaris. We found he had a big aperture of frontal sinus and dry scab in nasal endoscopic examination. His symptoms disappeared after cleaning and washing accessory nasal cavity by salt water.

A case of respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the sinonasal tract.

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma is a rare, non-neoplastic tumour characterised by an abnormal mixture of tissues that are indigenous to the region. REAH are shiny, polypoid, exophytic masses with a rubbery to firm texture. They may arise and co-exist in the setting of inflammatory polyps. We present a case of a 49-year-old patient who was referred to the department with a clinical diagnosis of chronic nasal sinusitis. Results of post-op histopathological examination show a mild change of the respiratory epithelium requiring, among others, differentiation from inverted papilloma an

Rare and unusual benign tumors of the sinonasal tract and pharynx: Case series and literature review.

There are a number of benign tumors of the nose and pharynx that are seldomly reported in literature but that can sometimes prove difficult to treat and extremely important for differential diagnosis. The present study presents cases of rare benign tumors localized in the pharynx, nasal and sinus cavities, as well as reviews of literature and historical references for each type of tumor. Unilateral nasal hemangioma in a 72-year-old male which, although not a rare pathology, raised problems due to auto-resection of the tumor. The surgeon was able to pull it out with ease without bleeding; it is

Clinicopathologic study of 60 cases of urothelial neoplasms with inverted growth patterns: Reclassification by international consultation on urologic disease (ICUD) recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Most urothelial neoplasms of the bladder show an exophytic papillary pattern, but some show an inverted growth pattern. In 2004, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a detailed histologic classification system for papillary urothelial neoplasms, but not for inverted forms. The International Consultation on Urologic Disease (ICUD) recommendations of 2012 are applicable to inverted/endophytic papillary lesions as follows: 1) inverted papilloma (IP), 2) inverted papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential (IPUNLMP), 3) inverted papillary urothelial carcinoma, low

Frequent KRAS and HRAS mutations in squamous cell papillomas of the head and neck.

Squamous cell papilloma (SCP) is a benign neoplasm of the head and neck. Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been reported to be a tumourigenic factor for SCP. However, not all SCPs are positive for HPV, suggesting that other possible mechanisms are involved in their development. In this study, we examined the mutational status of 51 SCPs using targeted panel sequencing in addition to HPV status using GP5+/GP6+ PCR. HPV DNA was detected in 6 (12%) SCPs, while KRAS and HRAS mutations were detected in 18 (35%) and 17 (33%) SCPs, respectively. Notably, KRAS mutations, HRAS mutations and HPV infection

Mucosal Spread of Sinonasal Adenocarcinoma into the Nasolacrimal Duct Without Bony Erosion of the Nasolacrimal Canal: A Case Report.

Sinonasal malignancy is a rare but recognized cause for nasolacrimal obstruction leading to epiphora. While direct mucosal spread through the nasolacrimal duct can occur in benign sinonasal tumors such as inverting papilloma, the same phenomenon has not been described in malignant lesions. The authors present a case of a low-grade nonintestinal type sinonasal adenocarcinoma centered on the inferior meatus of the sinonasal cavity, showing mucosal invasion into the nasolacrimal duct with bony expansion but no erosion of the nasolacrimal canal. The lesion was excised en bloc with a combined endos

Management of Frontal Sinus Tumors.

The most common primary tumors of the frontal sinus are osteomas and inverted papillomas, although a variety of other tumors involving this space have been reported. With the advent of new surgical techniques and instrumentation, an endoscopic approach to this region has become feasible. The preoperative assessment and decision making must take into account the complexity of frontal sinus anatomy, tumor type, tumor location, and associated attachments. These procedures allow adequate visualization, tumor removal, and postoperative monitoring, and preserve fairly normal sinus function. Open tec

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the maxillary sinus: case report.

The case is described of a male patient with respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the left maxillary sinus that initially presented as a chronic sinus inflammation. This benign lesion is characterized by glandular proliferation originating from the surface of the respiratory epithelium. Maxillary sinus localisation is very rare but is very important to be able to distinguish hamartomas from schneiderian papillomas of the inverted type and adenocarcinomas, potentially requiring aggressive surgical treatment. Moreover, misinterpretation of the respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamart

Perıostın and fıbronectın ın nasal lesıons: key players ın polyps and ınverted papıllomas.

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal lesions are common benign masses with overlapping clinical and histopathological features. Extracellular matrix proteins such as periostin, fibronectin, and tenascin-C play key roles in tissue remodeling and inflammation, yet their distinct expression profiles in these lesions remain poorly defined. AIM: This study aimed to compare the immunohistochemical staining patterns of periostin, fibronectin, and tenascin-C in sinonasal lesions to elucidate their roles in pathogenesis and enhance differential diagnosis. METHODS: In this retrospective study, pathological specimens

Polypoid urothelial tumor with inverted growth pattern in the renal pelvis: morphologic and molecular characteristics of a unique diagnostic entity.

We report 13 cases of unique polypoid urothelial tumors with inverted growth pattern (PUTIPs) occurring in the proximal ureter and renal pelvis. We describe their morphologic features and further characterize them in regard to TERT promoter mutation status and microsatellite instability. Thirteen cases were identified in our consult archives from 1994 to present. Patients ranged in age from 52 to 83 years at the time of diagnosis (mean, 68.4 years). Grossly, lesions were described variously as pink-tan to white exophytic and friable lesions that were polypoid or pedunculated, located in the re

Morphological and immunohistochemical evidence of human papilloma virus (HPV) involvement in the dysplastic lesions of the uterine cervix.

A series of 110 biopsies of the uterine cervix containing dysplastic and/or in situ changes were assessed morphologiccally with reference to presence or absence of the coexistent condylomatous lesions, and using the immunoperoxidase-PAP technique to disclose the HPV (human papilloma virus) antigens in the cells. Morphologically, 79 biopsies contained condylomatous (CO) lesions (63 flat, 12 inverted and 4 papillomatous ones), and 31 were non-condylomatous (NCO) dysplasias/in situ carcinomas. The mean age of the CO group was more than 10 years less than that of NCO women (P less than 0.0001). Of

Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasms of Minor Salivary Glands With AKT1 p.Glu17Lys Mutation.

The spectrum of low-grade intraductal papillary proliferations of the salivary glands is heterogenous, and reproducible morphologic diagnostic criteria have not yet been established. Recognized types are sialadenoma papilliferum, inverted ductal papilloma, and intraductal papilloma, but some lesions have been possibly included in the morphologic spectrum of cystadenoma or low-grade intraductal carcinomas. We herein present detailed morphologic, immunophenotypic, and genotypic features of 3 minor salivary gland neoplasms affecting 2 men (aged 65 and 71 y) and 1 woman (aged 78 y). They ranged in
