[The relation to the humor and laugh in patients with schizophrenia].

This study provides the data on gelotophobia (the fear of being laughed at), gelotophilia (the joy of being laughed at) and katagelasticism (the joy of laughing at others) in patients with schizophrenia in comparison with controls. Gelotophobia was significantly higher and katagelasticism was significantly lower in psychiatric patients than in controls. The negative correlation was found between gelotophobia and the duration of illness among patients with paranoid schizophrenia. Gelotophilia and katagelasticism were correlated positively both in patients and controls. In patients with schizoty

Cognitive reappraisal capacity mediates the relationship between prefrontal recruitment during reappraisal of anger-eliciting events and paranoia-proneness.

Difficulties in emotion regulation, particularly in using adaptive regulation strategies such as cognitive reappraisal, are a commonly observed correlate of paranoia. While it has been suggested that poor implementation of cognitive reappraisal in dealing with aversive events precedes the onset of subclinical paranoid thinking, there is little empirical research on neural activation patterns during cognitive reappraisal efforts that might indicate vulnerability towards paranoid thinking. Prefrontal EEG alpha asymmetry changes were recorded while n = 57 participants were generating alternative

[Compulsory outpatient treatment can prevent involuntary commitment].

Compulsory outpatient treatment (co-pt) has been possible in Denmark since 2010. The aim is to secure necessary treatment, reduce involuntary commitment and improve quality of life for patients with a severe psychiatric illness. Co-pt has been brought into use in 33 cases. This case report describes a patient with paranoid schizophrenia who several times developed severe psychotic symptoms shortly after discharge due to lack of compliance with treatment. Within one year of co-pt the patient was not admitted to hospital and improved in overall functioning. After terminating co-pt the patient ra

Unusually persistent complainants.

BACKGROUND: Querulous paranoia may have disappeared from the psychiatric literature, but is it flourishing in modern complaints organisations and the courts? AIMS: To investigate the unusually persistent complainants who lay waste to their own lives and place inordinate demands and stress on complaints organisations. METHOD: Complaints officers completed questionnaires on both unusually persistent complainants and matched controls. RESULTS: Persistent complainants (distinguished by their pursuit of vindication and retribution) consumed time and resources and resorted to both direct and veil

[Anorexia nervosa in men].

Nervous anorexia seen in males (25 cases), having a certain similarity in the clinical picture with female anorexia, has nevertheless, some special traits. Cases of anorexia in males are characterized by a higher predominance of hereditary loading, by an earlier onset (10--14 in comparison to 15--20 of female anorexia), a rather early appearance of refined deficitary symptomatology, and frequently enough a rapid psychopathization. However, these patients preserve formal abilities for a rather long period. The disease, as a rule, is an expression of a schizophrenic process unlike female anorexi

The Ego Impairment Index and schizophrenia: a validation study.

This study is an extension of our work on a new scale, the Ego Impairment Index (EII; Perry & Viglione, 1991). The index is theoretically based on Beres's (1956) model of ego assessment and was empirically developed on a sample of melancholic, depressed outpatients, diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed. [DSM-III]; American Psychiatric Association, 1980). The EII is derived from the Rorschach Inkblot Test and offers a single composite score of ego impairment. This study validates the use of the EII with a heterogeneous sample of schizophrenic

Musculoskeletal disorders, personality traits, psychological distress, and accident proneness of Chinese coal miners.

BACKGROUND: Human factors comprise one of the important reasons leading to the casualty accidents in coal mines. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships among musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), personality traits, psychological distress, and accident proneness of coal miners. PARTICIPANTS: There were 1500 Chinese coal miners surveyed in this study. Among these miners, 992 valid samples were obtained. METHODS: The study surveyed the MSDs, personality traits, psychological distress, and accident proneness of coal miners with MSDs Likert scale, Eysenck personality ques

Effects of Short-Term Versus Long-Term Mentalization-Based Therapy on Psychiatric Symptoms in Outpatients With Borderline Personality Disorder: Exploratory Results From a Randomized Clinical Trial.

We conducted a randomized clinical trial assessing the beneficial and harmful effects of short-term versus long-term mentalization-based therapy (MBT) for outpatients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and found no evidence of a difference on BPD symptom severity, functional impairment, quality of life, global functioning, and severe self-harm. In this paper, we assessed the effects of short-term versus long-term MBT on the exploratory outcome, psychiatric symptoms, assessed with the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R). Participants included the full intention-to-treat sample of th

Efficacy and Safety of Aripiprazole in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic medication, and its use in treating borderline personality disorder (BPD) is debatable because it is not FDA-approved for treating BPD. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of aripiprazole in patients with BPD. On July 2, 2021, the protocol (CRD42021256647) was registered in PROSPERO. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Ovid-Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, and Cochrane (CENTRAL) were searched without regard for language or publication date. We also searched trial registries on ClinicalTrials.gov and the WHO International Clinical Trials Regis

Replication of dissociation-psychosis link in New Zealand students and inmates.

To assess the relationship between dissociative and psychotic experiences, New Zealand university students (N = 119) and prison inmates (N = 42) were administered the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) and Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R). Strong correlations were found between DES scores and the psychoticism and paranoid ideation subscales of the SCL-90-R (students: r = .520, .517, respectively; inmates: r = .637, .649, respectively). While other correlations were also significant (but smaller), these results are consistent with previous studies that have used a range of measures of

The emergence of the Bowery as a psychiatric dumping ground.

The drastic reduction of State Hospital population in New York over the past decade has led to a demographic relocation of the mentally ill, rather than any real decline in the rate or severity of mental disorders. Unable to function on their own in society and without adequate supportive facilities available, many discharged patients live in the streets and eventually end up on the Bowery, where they are cared for at The Men's Shelter. Studies have shown that over 50% of the current Bowery population has a history of mental illness and that alcoholism is often a secondary, rather than primary

Psychiatric diagnosis and differential risks of offending following discharge.

Psychiatric diagnosis is not considered a risk factor for offending following discharge. However, treatment interventions and aftercare are strongly influenced by clinical primary diagnosis. We compared differential risks of reoffending of patients falling into six primary diagnostic categories following discharge from Medium Secure Units in the UK: schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder; delusional disorder; mania/hypomania; depressive disorder; organic brain syndrome; personality disorder. We followed up 1344 patients, on average 6.2 years (SD=2.1) at risk, discharged from 7 of 14 Regional M

Prevalence of Comorbid Personality Disorder in Psychotic and Non-psychotic Disorders.

Introduction: The burden of personality disorders (PDs) in China is large and the focus on mental health services is increasing. However, there is a lack of sufficient evidence regarding the prevalence of comorbid PD in psychotic and non-psychotic disorders, and whether PDs have different distributions. We aimed to investigate the PD comorbidity distribution pattern between psychotic and non-psychotic disorders using a clinical population-based study. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1,497 patients in Shanghai. PDs were screened using the Personality Diagnostic Qu

Shared psychotic disorder - a case study of folie à famille.

BACKGROUND: Folie à famille is a rare form of shared psychotic disorder. It is defined as the transfer of delusions from one person to another. CASE REPORT: This paper presents a case of shared psychotic disorder in two brothers, aged 16 and 17 and their mother who were admitted on the same day at the Clinic for psychiatry. The inducer was a mother, suffering from schizophrenia. She transferred her delusions to her sons. Both boys produced mostly the same paranoid delusions, that the others have been recording and monitoring them since their father died. After few days, the older boy, who had

Dysfluent Handwriting in Schizophrenic Outpatients.

Taking into account findings in the literature, the author aimed to test whether specific graphical characteristics of handwriting can distinguish patients diagnosed with schizophrenic disorders from healthy controls. Handwriting samples (one sample from each person) from 60 outpatients (29 women, 31 men; age M = 28.5, SD = 5.4) with paranoid schizophrenia were analyzed by three documents examiners and were compared to samples from 60 controls (30 men, 30 women, age M = 28.0, SD = 3.0) without psychiatric disorders. Document examiners assessed 32 graphical features potentially related to schiz

Perceptions of paranoid thoughts in a nonclinical group of college students.

Researchers have focused on the distinction between paranoid and social anxious thoughts for eliciting characteristics of paranoid thoughts in greater detail, which may aid theoretical development and understanding of persecutory delusions with regard to continuity between nonclinical and clinical symptoms. This is a report of characteristics of paranoid thoughts compared to social anxious thoughts in a sample of 128 college students. Nine dimensions concerning how individuals perceive their paranoid and social anxious thoughts were assessed as self-ratings for each on resistance, distress, ab
