Hookworms and the species infecting man in Zambia.

The rate of hookworm infections, determined by stool examination over a 7-month period, was 16.56% in medical examinees and 19.91% in in-patients in an urban hospital population in Zambia. The egg-load though was low. Culture of ova to the filariform larval stage, examination of adult worms expelled after anthelminthic treatment and collected at autopsy confirmed that the dominant species was Necator americanus. However, we report, perhaps for the first time, the presence of Ancylostoma duodenale in man in Zambia. Such information is important in assessing the clinical significance of hookworm

Efficacy of single doses of mebendazole in the treatment of Trichuris trichiura infection.

Single doses of 100 mg, 200 mg, 400 mg, and 600 mg of mebendazole in the treatment of very light to heavy Trichuris infections all reduced egg output by over 80%. The egg reduction rates were not affected by increased dosages of mebendazole given in heavier infections. Lower cure rates were obtained in patients with heavier worm burdens despite increased dosages of mebendazole, probably as a result of the diarrhea which is frequently associated with heavy Trichuris infection. A single dose of 600 mg mebendazole in the treatment of very light to very heavy infections gave egg reduction and cure

Schistosoma haematobium in Ajara community of Badagry. Metrifonate trials in the treatment of the disease.

Metrifonate, an organophosphorus cholinesterase inhibitor, which has been shown to be effective in the treatment of urinary schistosomiasis was administered orally to 145 school children aged 6-15 years at a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight in 3 doses at 14-day intervals. Urinalysis was carried out to determine egg out-put, haematuria and proteinuria. None of the subjects was anaemic before treatment, 78.6% tolerated the drug well while 21.4% had minimal and transient side-effects. 47.6% with light infections, 29.9% with moderate infections and 5.1% with heavy infections, had no ova of S. haematob

[A survey of schistosomiasis in Ivory Coast (author's transl)].

S. intercalatum has not yet been observed in Ivory Coast whereas S. mansoni and S. haematobium are frequent. S. mansoni schistosomiasis is distributed in limited foci as a consequence of the vital requirements of Biomphalaria. Its clinical detection is uneasy and stool control is necessary. Kato's technique is recommended. Prevalence has great topographic variations with an average value of 0,7 p. 100. Complications are not frequent, and can be detected only with rather sophisticated techniques available only in hospital. S. haematobium schistosomiasis is much more widespread according to the

The comparative efficacy of diamphenethide and rafoxanide against fasciola gigantica in sheep.

Efficacy of diamphenethide ("Coriban", Burroughs Wellcome) and rafoxanide ("Ranide", Merck Sharpe & Dohme, Ltd.) was evaluated in lambs against 8-week old experimentally induced Fasciola gigantica infection. Results were assessed by the reduction in worm counts at post-mortem examination 8 weeks after treatment. Diamphenethide at a dosage rate of 100 mg/kg body weight was found 99.4 per cent effective. Rafoxanide at a dosage rate of 10 mg/kg body weight showed 98.78 per cent efficacy. Six weeks following treatment, infected animals treated with either drug exhibited significantly greater weigh

A questionnaire study of equine gastrointestinal parasite control in Scotland.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Anthelmintic resistance in equine gastrointestinal nematodes is a threat to equine health and welfare. Detailed knowledge of anthelmintic use and parasite control methods is a prerequisite to identification of potential risk factors for resistance. OBJECTIVES: To identify parasite control practices employed by equine owners in Scotland and investigate management factors associated with anthelmintic resistance. STUDY DESIGN: Questionnaire study of equine parasite control in Scotland. METHODS: Questionnaires were available electronically, distributed at a confere

Smells Like Anthelmintic Resistance-Gastrointestinal Prevalence, Burden and Diversity in Dogs from Portugal.

Anthelmintic resistance has been documented worldwide, but few cases have been reported in dogs. Shelter dogs are a great opportunity to study intestinal helminths and assess their potential resistance to anthelmintic compounds. With these two goals in mind, 361 faecal samples were collected from dogs in 18 municipalities in Portugal, from 19 shelters and 11 private tutors. These samples were analysed using the Mini-FLOTAC before and 13 days after deworming. The percentage of faecal egg count reduction was calculated. Parasitic forms were identified in 22.4% of the samples collected: Trichuris

Effects of aggregation and sample size on composite faecal egg counts in sheep.

Composite faecal egg counts (FEC) are increasingly used to support strategic anthelmintic treatment decisions in grazing livestock. However, their accuracy as estimators of group mean FEC is affected by the number of individual samples included, how thoroughly they are mixed, and the underlying degree of parasite aggregation between individual hosts. This paper uses a Negative Binomial model for parasite aggregation, and a Poisson model for egg distribution within faecal suspensions, in order to optimise composite FEC protocol for commercial sheep flocks. Our results suggest that faecal egg de

Sensitive and specific assay for detecting circulating antigens in individuals infected with Schistosoma mansoni.

Monoclonal antibody 128C3/3/21 in an antigen-capture ELISA was used to detect circulating antigen in individuals infected with Schistosoma mansoni. This antibody recognizes a carbohydrate epitope expressed on the major group of acidic egg glycoproteins and on glycoproteins and glycolipids in all other stages of parasite development. The overall sensitivity of the assay was 78%, with a sensitivity of 100% for patients excreting >100 egg/g feces (EGF) and 72% for those excreting <100 EGF. By increasing the degree of antibody biotinylation, the authors have now achieved sensitivities of 92.4% ove

Seasonal prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in northern Mexico.

This study aimed to describe the shedding pattern of gastrointestinal parasite eggs by a wild population of desert bighorn sheep (DBS; Ovis canadensis) in northern Mexico. Seventy-five fresh faecal samples were collected from the ground in each season within an hour after being expelled by these animals. The generalized linear mixed model showed that eggs per gram of faeces were highest in winter (577 ± 399) and lowest in summer (260 ± 198). Generalized linear models revealed that Strongyloides spp. predominated during most seasons with a peak in summer (85% of faecal samples analysed) and the
