Diagnostic clinical parasitology: IV. Identification of the blood parasites?

This is the fourth article in a series of articles entitled "Diagnostic Clinical Parasitology" and contains information on the recovery and identification of human blood parasites. The organisms covered include those that cause the diseases malaria, babesiosis, leishmaniasis, and trypanosomiasis. Some of the filarial worms, which can be considered "blood parasites," have been discussed in the third article in the series, "Identification of the Helminths." Although some of these organisms may rarely be encountered in the laboratory in clinical specimens, they will probably have to be identified…

Nuclear envelope - plasma membrane - compaction domain in malaria parasites.

A novel compaction domain between the nuclear envelope and the plasma membrane is observed in intraerythrocytic Plasmodium knowlesi and Plasmodium chabaudi. The plasma membrane and the two nuclear membranes stick very closely together thus forming a heptalamina domain. This has an outer diameter of 14.3 +/- 1.1 nm and can be as long as 2/um. Fracture faces in this region appear to be devoid of the typical membrane-intercalating-particles. This compaction domain occurs only in ring-stages and early to mid trophozoites, but never in schizonts.

[The effects of intestinal parasites on enteric bacterial flora].

Intestinal parasites, can cause malabsorption syndromes and shifts in intestinal bacterial flora. In this study 200 cases with parasitic infestations were examined in regard to their intestinal flora. The series included 96 giardiasis. 58 Ascariasis, 20 Oxyuriasis and 17 H. nana 14 T. trichiura, 8 Tenia cases. The stool cultures yielded mainly E. coli, Strep. faecalis and other gram negative enteric bacteria, yeasts along with uncommon species as B. subtilis, Herellea, Shigella at low frequencies. The control group of 50 patients without parasitic infestations had the same distribution ratio f…

Prevalence of intestinal parasites in Latino residents of Chicago.

In 1970, 250,000 Spanish-speaking persons resided in Chicago, 80,000 of whom were Puerto Rican. Because migration to Chicago is constantly occurring from areas where intestinal parasites are endemic, a survey was conducted in a predominantly Puerto Rican neighborhood to determine the prevalence of these parasites and to provide impetus for further case finding and treatment programs. The survey was part of an epidemiologic and cutreach workers going door-to-door obtained histories, hematocrits, and single stool specimens from 358 individuals. An overall intestinal parasite prevalence rate of 1…

Spatial and temporal turnover of parasite species and parasite-host interactions: a case study with fleas and gamasid mites parasitic on small mammals.

We studied patterns of ectoparasite species turnover and pairwise ectoparasite-host interactions across space and time in fleas and mites harboured by small mammals using a novel metric, zeta diversity (similarity between multiple communities). We asked whether the zeta diversity of parasites and their interactions with hosts follow a similar spatial or temporal trend. We found substantial differences in some (zeta decline and retention rate) but not in other (zeta decay) spatial patterns of zeta diversity between species and interactions, whereas the differences between the patterns of the te…

Trichinella: Becoming a parasite.

Phylogenetic evidence indicates that free-living nematodes gave rise to parasitic nematodes where parasitism evolved independently at least 15 times. The high level of genetic and biological diversity among parasites dictates an equally high level of diversity in the transition to parasitism. We previously hypothesized that horizontal gene transfer (HGT) played an important role in the evolution of parasitism among early ancestors of Trichinella, mediated by an interplay of ecological and evolutionary pathways that contributed to persistence and diversification. We propose that host selection …

Microbiota and parasite relationship.

The diversity of microbiota is different in each person. Many health problems such as autoimmune diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases … r effects on microbiota change. The main and focus of this review is to address the relationship of parasites with microbiota elements and to review the data about what changes they cause. Microbiota studies have gained importance recently and it is thought that it will contribute to the treatment of many diseases as well as in the fight against parasitic d …
