Three hundred and forty-one salivary gland fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology specimens taken over a 6-yr period were reviewed and correlated with clinical and/or histological findings. The aspirates were derived from parotid gland (212 cases), submandibular gland (124 cases), and minor salivary gland (5 cases). The major diagnostic categories were unsatisfactory (10 cases), normal (100 cases), sialadenitis (74 cases), cyst (34 cases), lipoma (5 cases), pleomorphic adenoma (55 cases), Warthin's tumor (36 cases), and malignancy (27 cases). The latter included 14 primary salivary neoplasms (4

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors bear uncanny characteristics of being different based on their morphological aspects rather than the presence of clear demarcation. This ambiguity in the spectrum from benign to malignant salivary gland neoplasms while categorizing the neoplasm is having inherent pitfalls. The present study was, therefore, designed to characterize benign and malignant salivary gland tumors based on their proliferative indices.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: Study samples comprised of 97 cases of histopathologically confirmed benign and malignant salivary gland tumors. The cases were i

Ceruminous gland tumor is the most common tumor of the ear canal in cats. Otoscopic examination of the ear tumor is so difficult due to narrowing of the external ear canal. The present study aimed to investigate clinical, ultrasonographic and histopathological characteristics of feline ceruminous gland neoplasm in cats. Ten cats with unilateral ear canal swelling were subjected to thorough physical and clinical investigations. Ultrasound of the ear canal and parotid gland was performed using 8.00 MHz linear probe. Tissue specimens were collected after surgical excision (total ear canal ablatio

INTRODUCTION: Warthin's tumor (WT) is the second most common neoplasm of the parotid gland and consists of two components, including lymphoid stroma and glandular epithelium. The malignant transformation of this tumor occurs most often in the lymphoid component; however, the carcinomatous transformation of the epithelial component is rare.
CASE REPORT: We present a patient who had a mass in the right mandibular angle two years before referral. A cystic mass was reported on sonography, and the patient underwent superficial parotidectomy with a pre-operative impression of lymphangiomatouse-like

INTRODUCTION: Warthin's tumor (WT) is a common benign salivary gland neoplasm with a negligible risk of malignant transformation. However, there is a risk of malignant tumors being misdiagnosed as WT on cytology and inappropriately managed conservatively.
METHODS: Patients from nine centers in Italy and the United Kingdom undergoing parotid surgery for cytologically diagnosed WT were included in this multicenter retrospective series. Definitive histology was compared with preoperative cytological diagnoses. Surgical complications were recorded.
RESULTS: A total of 496 tumors were identified.

Rare malignant tumor of the salivary gland, a myoepithelial carcinoma, arose de novo in the right parotid gland. The initial tumor was composed predominantly of myoepithelial cells. Subsequently the tumor recurred three times, with infiltration of the bones of the cranial base. Histological examination showed sarcomatoid neoplasm composed of malignant spindle cells with high mitotic rate and perineural invasion. There was no involvement of cervical lymph nodes. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated myoepithelial differentiation: tumor cells were positively stained with vimentin, alpha smooth muscl

INTRODUCTION: This article presents a patient with sialolipoma of the submandibular gland, a rare neoplasm, and reviews related literatures. A MEDLINE literature and articles published in the Korean language in KMbase (kmbase.medric.or.kr) search was performed and the literatures were reviewed.
DISCUSSION: We presented a sialolipoma of the submandibular gland and other 27 cases from published literatures. Our case was shown in 62-year-old female. It was the second case of submandibular gland sialolipoma reported in the English literature. Unlike other lipomatous lesion in the oral cavity, def

BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a systemic disease and various organs can therefore be affected. Ocular manifestations of non-Hodgkin lymphomas are possible but involvement of the eyelids or lacrimal glands are uncommon.
CASE REPORT: A 63-year-old female patient suffered from a painless upper eyelid swelling of the left eye for 3 weeks. The anterior and posterior parts of the eyes showed no pathologic signs and X-ray examination of both orbits revealed no pathologic findings. Magnetic resonance imaging and computer tomography of the head revealed a neoplasm of the left lacrimal gland and

Primary epithelial neoplasms of the salivary gland in children are uncommon but are well recognized and occur principally in the major salivary glands. The purpose of this report is to document our experience with an adenocarcinoma of the buccal submucosa (one of several sites of minor salivary gland tissue) that metastasized to multiple bones as the initial sites of distant disease after a local recurrence. The clinical history, imaging studies, and microscopic sections including immunoperoxidase studies were evaluated from the primary tumor, local recurrence, and a metastatic lesion from the

We present a case of a malignant Ewing-like neoplasm of the parotid gland in a 20-year-old woman with an EWSR1-KLF15 gene fusion that presented with pulmonary metastasis. Despite the fact that the tumor was essentially immunohistochemically negative for keratins, p63, and p40, we interpret this neoplasm as an unusual form of a high-grade myoepithelial carcinoma based on its focal plasmacytoid cytology, chondromyxoid matrix, SOX10, S100 protein, and calponin expression, and the knowledge that the EWSR1-KLF15 gene fusion has, to date, only been identified in 2 tumors, both myoepithelial carcinom

Myoepithelial carcinoma (MC) is a rare neoplasm of the salivary gland generally occurring in the parotid gland and rarely in the minor salivary glands. It poses a diagnostic challenge on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology because it can show different cell types and lack clear features of malignancy. This can lead to a range of differential diagnosis on cytology. The diagnostic difficulty can be compounded if the lesion is present at an unusual site. A 41-year-old male presented with a recurrent swelling on the check since 2 years with a prior history of pleomorphic adenoma (PA) at the same

PURPOSE: Most primary tumors spreading metastasis to the parotid gland are usually located in the head and neck region, nonetheless, rarely, parotid gland can also be the target of metastatic localization site of distant primary tumors. The purpose of this study was to describe a clinical series of metastasis to the parotid gland from distant primary tumors (non Head & Neck).
METHODS: The clinical databases of parotid tumors in two academic centers have been analyzed and 11 cases of parotid metastatic cancers from distant primary tumors were found.
RESULTS: Primary tumor was lung cancer in 8

Neoplasm of salivary gland constitutes about 3% of all tumours of head and neck. Within the category we can differentiate tumours of a very different histological structure. What lies behind such great differences in the changes within the salivary glands is complex embryogenesis of the glands. This work aims at the assessment of the frequency of occurrence of malignant neoplasm in parotid gland and submandibular gland based on the material collected at the ENT Department of the Medical University in Poznan in the years 1995-2006. In the 12-year period, 103 patients suffered from malignant neo

Introduction: A Warthin tumor is a benign salivary gland neoplasm, mostly found in the parotid gland. The number of reported Warthin tumors has increased over the years due to better diagnostic modalities and health system modernization. Warthin tumor rarely transforms into a malignant tumor; in this work, we present all cases reported in the English literature of different types of lymphomas within Warthin tumors. In this case, we present a low-grade follicular lymphoma arising within a Warthin tumor. Clinical report: A 64-year-old man presented to an oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic wit

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy reliably diagnoses parotid gland lesions preoperatively, whereas intraoperative frozen section (FS) has the additional benefit of assessing surgical margins and refining diagnoses; however, the role of FS in the setting of prior FNA diagnosis is not well established. Our aim was to determine whether FS should still be performed after a prior FNA/ CNB diagnosis. Parotid gland resections from January 2009 to January 2020 were identified; however, only patients who had both FNA and FS constituted our study population. For the purpose of statistical analysis, FN

BACKGROUND: The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) is developed to aid diagnosis and management of salivary gland tumors. This study evaluates the time-to-treatment initiation (TTI) for parotid gland tumors in the Netherlands and relates these to the MSRSGC classification. Subsequently, the use of the MSRSGC in the Netherlands is evaluated.
METHODS: Data regarding fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and histopathological resections of the parotid were gathered from the Dutch nationwide pathology data bank (PALGA). The TTI was calculated for each MSRSGC categor

PURPOSE: Pleomorphic adenoma (mixed tumor) is the most common neoplasm of the parotid gland and one of the most frequent types of salivary gland tumor, generally with benign behavior and relatively slow growing. The adenomas could arise from the superficial, deep or from both superficial and deep parotid's lobes.
METHODS: The aim of this review is to retrospectively analyze the surgical management of patients with pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland performed at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (Department of Sense Organs of "Azienda Policlinico Umberto I" in Rome), from 2010 to 202
