Association between Maternal and Paternal History of Chronic Constipation and Its Development: A Brief Report.

INTRODUCTION: A family history of chronic constipation (CC) is considered an important predisposing factor for developing CC. This study aimed to compare the associations of maternal and paternal histories of CC with constipation in offspring. METHODS: Students at Hiroshima University completed a web-based health checkup questionnaire between April and June 2025. Data included baseline characteristics, lifestyle factors, family history of CC, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Eating Attitudes Test (EAT)-26, and Bulimic Investigatory Test (BITE). CC was diagnosed using the Rome IV criteria. Mul

Three-generation familial risks in early-onset prostate cancer with maternal and paternal relatives.

OBJECTIVES: To study familial prostate cancer (PCa) between first-degree relatives (FDRs) and second-degree relatives (SDRs), we accessed Swedish nationwide family and cancer data that extended through three generations and thus providing a unique chance for study of familial cancer in PCa between close and distant relatives (SDRs). The specific aim was to show the usefulness of data on maternal and paternal uncles and grandfathers for risk assessment on young patients with PCa. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Familial relative risks (standardised incidence ratios [SIRs]) for PCa were calculated for yo

Paternal Postnatal Sense of Security as a Predictor of Fathers' Breastfeeding Support: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Paternal postnatal sense of security, referring to fathers' perceptions of role clarity, emotional reassurance, and support during the postpartum period, may be relevant to their active involvement in infant care and their influence on breastfeeding practices. METHODS: This cross-sectional correlational study included 103 fathers whose partners were in the early postpartum period. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Paternal Postnatal Sense of Security Scale, and the Partner Breastfeeding Influence Scale. Pearson and Spearman's rho correlations were used to

A higher paternal ultra-processed food consumption is directly associated with parameters of neonatal anthropometry.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of paternal consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) on neonatal anthropometry and adiposity. We hypothesized that higher paternal consumption of UPF could influence neonatal anthropometry and adiposity. Prospective cohort nested within a randomized controlled trial for pregnant women with overweight was conducted in the primary health care of a Brazilian municipality. UPF consumption was estimated through two 24-hour dietary recalls, following the NOVA classification. Data on birth weight and length were obtained and neonatal anthrop

Advanced paternal age at birth and risk of cyanotic congenital heart defects in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Limited inconsistent evidence suggests a potential association between advanced paternal age (APA) and simple congenital heart defects, which often resolve without surgical interventions, in offspring. There is no reported potential relationship between APA with major cardiac defects like cyanotic congenital heart defects (CCHD). This study evaluated the association between APA (age at birth ≥40 years) and the occurrence of CCHD among livebirths in the USA, accounting for maternal and other potential confounding factors. METHODS: Data were from the National Vital Statistics Syst

Sperm tRNA-derived fragments: molecular mechanisms and clinical implications for paternal epigenetic inheritance.

Sperm tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) have emerged as novel regulators of paternal epigenetic inheritance. By modulating embryonic epigenetic reprogramming, transposon silencing, and intergenerational genetic programming, tRFs mediate the transgenerational transmission of paternal environmental information, extending conventional notions of genetic inheritance. This review systematically elaborates the molecular mechanisms, clinical applications, and potential interventional strategies of tRFs. Through an in-depth analysis of how tRFs regulate the epigenetic landscape during embryonic developmen

Paternal obesity by lactation overnutrition induces sex-related metabolic and reproductive changes in their offspring.

The prenatal period, childhood, and adolescence are critical periods of development characterized by high plasticity. As an extension of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) paradigm, known as Origins of Paternal Health and Disease (POHaD), recent studies in rodents provide evidence that paternal obesity is associated not only with infertility but also with an increased risk of metabolic disorders in the offspring. In rodents, litter size reduction is used to induce lactational overfeeding by increasing the amount of breast milk to pups, which causes metabolic and reproducti

Pubertal delay in patients with paternally derived 15q11.2-q13 duplication syndrome and MKRN3 overexpression.

CONTEXT: Duplications of the 15q11.2-q13 region are primarily associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, while their endocrine implications remain poorly defined. The imprinted gene MKRN3, located within this locus, inhibits pubertal onset, and loss-of-function variants cause central precocious puberty. However, the clinical impact of increased MKRN3 dosage remains unclear. This study investigates whether paternally derived 15q11.2-q13 duplications lead to MKRN3 overexpression and are associated with delayed pubertal maturation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four patients with confirmed paternal

Dynamic architecture of mammalian paternal chromatin: histone-to-protamine exchange and post-fertilization reprogramming.

Chromatin remodeling in male germ cells and after fertilization plays a pivotal role in genetic transmission and early embryonic development. During spermatogenesis, histone-based chromatin undergoes progressive reorganization: canonical histones are gradually replaced by testis-specific variants, then by transition proteins, and ultimately by highly basic protamines (PRM1 and PRM2). This hierarchical replacement, modulated by histone post-translational modifications-including hyperacetylation, ubiquitination, and dynamic methylation-and supported by molecular chaperones and chromatin remodele

Paternal Depression in the Child's First Year of Life and Subsequent Father-Child Co-Residence.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between fathers' postpartum depression and whether their children lived with them at 3 subsequent time points. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a national US cohort of mostly nonmarital births. Paternal depression was assessed when the child was age 1 and fathers' co-residence was assessed when their children were ages 3, 5, and 9. We estimated unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models of associations between paternal depression in the postpartum year and father's subsequent co-residence with the child. RESULTS: Among 1691 new fath

Preeclampsia prediction with maternal and paternal polygenic risk scores: the TMM BirThree Cohort Study.

Genomic information from pregnant women and the paternal parent of their fetuses may provide effective biomarkers for preeclampsia (PE). This study investigated the association of parental polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for blood pressure (BP) and PE with PE onset and evaluated predictive performances of PRSs using clinical predictive variables. In the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study, 19,836 participants were genotyped using either Affymetrix Axiom Japonica Array v2 (further divided into two cohorts-the PRS training cohort and the internal-validation cohor

Sibling incest resulting in pregnancy: A forensic case study of paternal neglect and pornographic exposure.

This case report presents a rare incident of sibling incest resulting in pregnancy, occurring within a context of paternal neglect and inadequate parental supervision. A 14-year-old boy, after unsupervised exposure to pornographic content on his father's mobile device, engaged in sexual intercourse with his 15-year-old sister. The case highlights the psychological and developmental risks posed by early and unregulated access to sexually explicit material. It also underscores the diagnostic, ethical, and legal challenges in the detection and forensic evaluation of intrafamilial sexual abuse. Th

Nutrition-Based Paternal Influence on Gynecological Diseases in Female Offspring via Epigenetic Mechanisms.

Studies have widely indicated that the composition of maternal nutrition and diets might affect offspring health later in life. Studies on paternal contribution to the offspring's disease are relatively scarce but are an important subject to the field. Recent research has suggested that paternal factors influenced by nutrition have been implicated in the transgenerational heritage of health and diseases through epigenetic mechanisms. This review aims to explore the current state of knowledge on nutrition-based paternal impacts on gynecological disease through epigenetics, focusing on the trans

Effects of paternal arachidonic acid supplementation on offspring behavior and hypothalamus inflammation markers in the mouse.

Arachidonic acid (AA) is involved in inflammation and plays a role in growth and brain development in infants. We previously showed that exposure of mouse sires to AA for three consecutive generations induces a cumulative change in fatty acid (FA) involved in inflammation and an increase in body and liver weight in the offspring. Here, we tested the hypothesis that paternal AA exposure changes the progeny's behavioral response to a proinflammatory insult, and asked whether tissue-specific FA are associated with that response. Male BALB/c mice were supplemented daily with three doses of AA for

Paternal and maternal psychological distress and adolescent health risk behaviors: The role of sensitive periods.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent health risk behaviors are linked to poor physical and mental health outcomes. While past research shows that maternal psychological distress predicts those behaviors, we know less about the role of paternal psychological distress and the role of sensitive periods. METHODS: Using 11,128 data from families (50.5% female children) from the UK's Millennium Cohort Study, we examined the role of timing of exposure to paternal and maternal psychological distress in engagement in health risk behaviors (smoking, alcohol use, binge drinking, and sexual activity) at age 14. Support for the Supporter: Paternal Postpartum Loneliness and Social Support During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

During the postpartum period, fathers may be at risk of increased stress and loneliness, which may be offset or buffered by the provision of social support. This study aimed to explore fathers' postpartum experiences of loneliness, perceived stress, and social support. A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to inform study design and analysis. Semistructured interviews were conducted to collect data from 12 fathers, living in the Republic of Ireland, who had an infant aged 6 months or younger. A grounded theory entitled "support for the supporter," describing fathers' experiences w

Persisting neurobehavioral consequences of daily or intermittent paternal cannabis administration in F1 and F2 Rats.

Repeated paternal preconception exposure to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) alone or together with the other constituents in a cannabis extract has been shown in our earlier studies in rats to cause significant neurobehavioral impairment in their offspring. In the current study, we compared the effects of daily cannabis extract (CE) exposure to cannabis on two consecutive days per week, modeling weekend cannabis use in human. The CE contained Δ9-THC as well as cannabidiol and cannabinol. We also extended the investigation of the study to cross-generational effects of grand-paternal cannabis e
