Misperceiving peers: Altruism moderates the association between perceived and peer-reported pro-environmental behavior.

Environmental degradation is a complex issue driven by human activities, highlighting the key role of pro-environmental behavior (PEB) in reducing and mitigating the negative impacts of human activities on the environment. Previous research has illustrated that social norms are important for predicting PEB. However, people tend to misperceive the degree to which others engage in environmental behaviors. In this study, respondents were recruited at beaches in the Valparaiso Region, central Chile. The surveyor approached individuals who were staying at the beach with a peer. We recruited a sampl

Automated Quantification of Head Motion Synchrony in Peer Interactions of Autistic and Non-Autistic Youth.

Peer interactions take on increasing importance for youth in middle childhood and adolescence. Autistic youth face particular challenges interacting with non-autistic peers; thus, it is critical to understand factors that predict interaction enjoyment for autistic and non-autistic youth. One candidate predictor is interpersonal motion synchrony. Experimentally induced motion synchrony leads to interpersonal liking and closeness, but these outcomes from experimental synchrony may not generalize to synchrony that naturally occurs in interpersonal interactions. Computer vision approaches allow fo

Perspectives on peer recovery support for people experiencing homelessness: A qualitative study of key informants from national health care for the homeless programs.

INTRODUCTION: People experiencing homelessness face high rates of opioid use disorder (OUD) with substantial barriers to treatment. Peer recovery support-delivered by individuals with lived experience of substance use and recovery-has emerged as a promising strategy for improving OUD care. However, little is known about peer recovery support within Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) programs. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with 18 key informants from six stand-alone HCH programs across the United States, including program leaders (n = 6), OUD clinicians (n = 6),

Microsystem components and EFL achievement in adolescence: A network analysis.

Drawing on ecological systems theory, we investigate how microsystem components (i.e., individual characteristics and the family, school, and peer environments) collectively relate to English as a foreign language (EFL) achievement. To this end, we administered a cross-sectional questionnaire to 1395 Chinese middle school students and conducted a network analysis to model these relationships. The results indicated that dimensions of study engagement (dedication and vigor), teacher support, and family socioeconomic status (SES) were directly and positively associated with EFL achievement, where

Social dynamics of AI adoption in parents' educational decisions.

When adopting a performance-enhancing technology offers short-run relative advantages, competitive pressure can drive diffusion even if most adopters would prefer a collective ban. We study this dynamic in the context of unrestricted AI tools for teenagers' education. In preregistered, incentive-compatible experiments with approximately 2,000 parents in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, we elicit willingness to pay for a three-month premium subscription to a leading general-purpose AI platform. Demand increases steeply with the share of other teenagers using AI: Moving perceiv

"I would much rather hear the truth so I can be prepared": Virtual peer support, health access, and information-seeking after hysteroscopy referral.

BackgroundDeficiencies in patient information undermine informed consent and patient safety in gynaecological care. When clinical communication fails, women turn to digital peer communities, directly affecting health access and decision-making. Hysteroscopy procedures are at heightened risk of this failure: pre-procedural information is routinely unstandardised, and anxiety affects up to 80% of patients, impairing attendance and completion.ObjectivesThis study investigated women's information needs following hysteroscopy referral, using naturally occurring online data to identify behavioural t

Peer accountability in patient safety: an under-examined determinant of team performance.

BACKGROUND: Patient safety has been pursued largely through systems, protocols, and checklists, yet preventable harm remains common and effective interventions are often difficult to sustain or transfer between settings. A consistent observation is that the same intervention succeeds in one unit and fails in another, the difference lying less in the tool than in how the team functions. This review argues that an under-examined determinant of that difference is peer accountability: the lateral, reciprocal responsibility of team members to uphold shared standards and address departures from them

A Social Network Theory-Based Investigation into the Characteristics of MSM in Virtual Communities.

Social networks significantly influence MSM's HIV prevention behaviors, with virtual communities serving as key interaction platforms. Using a Python web crawler, we analyzed 960 user profiles from Baidu Tieba's "Gay Bar" forum. The social network within this community exhibits a core-periphery structure, where a densely connected core facilitates effective information dissemination, while the majority of users reside in peripheral positions with limited and isolated connections. Relationships within the network are primarily formed based on shared interests rather than geographical proximity,

Physical activity and internalization problems in middle school students: the chain mediating role of rumination thinking and peer acceptance.

This study explores methods to improve internalizing problems in middle school students through physical exercise, aiming to construct a mediational model that includes physical exercise, Rumination, peer acceptance, and internalizing problems. The model examines the interactions and influence pathways among these variables to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanism through which physical exercise impacts internalizing problems in middle school students. 671 junior high school students were surveyed by physical exercise scale, Rumination scale, peer acceptance scale and int

Understanding peer support among healthcare assistants delivering hospice care at home: a protocol for a realist review.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, the demand for community palliative care, delivered within the home setting, is rising. Hospice support workers, also referred to as healthcare assistants, play a crucial role in providing this care, but evidence indicates they face challenges relating to inadequate training, isolation and emotional labour. This realist review aims to understand how peer support interventions can support healthcare assistants in delivering hospice care at home. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The realist review will follow a five-step process to explore the research question: (1) locating existi

Peer Acceptance of Autistic College Students.

As autistic young adults increasingly enter into higher education, many are faced with difficult social adjustment (e.g., making friends, acquiring social support) in college (McLeod et al. McLeod et al., Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 49:2320-2336, 2019). Understanding peer acceptance of autistic college students is critical for community growth toward an equitable education experience. Predictors of autism acceptance, such as knowledge of autism, quantity and quality of experience with autism, and family relationships were explored. Acceptance of autism was assessed with a sta

Applying an ecological model to identify resources that aid peer support workers in substance use disorder recovery: A qualitative study.

This qualitative study aimed to understand the intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, community, and public policy resources that peer support workers (PSWs) in the substance use disorder (SUD) recovery field perceive as helpful in supporting their efforts. Twenty-five PSWs participated in semistructured interviews designed to elicit their experiences and perspectives on resources that currently support or could better support their work. PSWs had a mean age of 49.3 years (SD = 12.9) and were primarily cisgender women (n = 16, 64%) and White (n = 20, 80%). Interviews were audio-recorded

Heterogeneous peer effects and gender-based interventions for teenage obesity.

This paper explores the role of gender heterogeneity in the social diffusion of obesity among adolescents and its policy implications. We propose a social interaction model which allows for gender-dependent heterogeneity in peer effects. Our empirical approach is consistent with the best response functions of a non-cooperative model where social interactions stem from the channel of pure spillover or pure conformity. We estimate the model using data on adolescent Body Mass Index and network-based interactions. Our approach allows us to account for network endogeneity. Our results show that pee

Positive peer relationships, social identity, and adaptive sport motivation in youth athletes.

Organized sport provides youth with the opportunity to form interpersonal relationships and derive part of their identity from sport team membership. Though identities are negotiated within the context of interpersonal relationships, little research has examined how peer relationships may associate with athletes' social identity and downstream sport motivation. The purpose of this study was to examine whether positive peer relationships were associated with adaptive sport motivation by way of athlete social identity. High school athletes (N = 202, female n = 121, Mage = 16.1 years, SDage = 1.3

The Role of Psychological Inflexibility in Adolescents' Loneliness: School Friendship Closeness as a Mediator.

This study aimed to expand knowledge on the roles of psychological inflexibility and school friendship closeness in adolescents' loneliness during the transition to upper secondary education. The participants were 885 Finnish adolescents (mean age = 15.74, SD = 0.37, 56% girls). Loneliness was measured twice: in Grade 9 and at the beginning of upper secondary school in 10th grade. Psychological inflexibility and the closeness of friendships in school were measured in Grade 9. Results showed that a high level of psychological inflexibility in Grade 9 was associated with higher loneliness at the
