A genetically informative developmental study of the relationship between conduct disorder and peer deviance in males.

BACKGROUND: Conduct disorder (CD) and peer deviance (PD) both powerfully predict future externalizing behaviors. Although levels of CD and PD are strongly correlated, the causal relationship between them has remained controversial and has not been examined by a genetically informative study. METHOD: Levels of CD and PD were assessed in 746 adult male-male twin pairs at personal interview for ages 8-11, 12-14 and 15-17 years using a life history calendar. Model fitting was performed using the Mx program. RESULTS: The best-fit model indicated an active developmental relationship between CD and

Young adults' understanding of, and reaction to, those with uncertain genetic results.

BACKGROUND: Genetic advances increase the likelihood that children may receive uncertain diagnoses such as cystic fibrosis screen positive inconclusive diagnosis (CFSPID) from newborn screening. Research suggests a profound impact on parents. Research is needed to understand the impact on the child, especially at key developmental points such as young adulthood, when identity forms. As young adults (YA) are influenced by peer reactions, this novel study explored YAs' sensemaking of CFSPID, and their hypothetical reactions to peers or romantic partners with CFSPID. METHODS: Four focus groups w

Attachment, Emotional Regulation, and Perceived Academic Efficacy in Adolescence: A Basis for Psychoeducational Intervention.

Objective: This study examined the relationships between secure attachment to parents and peers, emotional regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression), and perceived academic self-efficacy in adolescence. The research also aimed to identify how secure attachment is related to these variables to inform psychosocial interventions in educational and family contexts. Method: A total of 703 adolescents (351 boys, 352 girls; aged 15-18) completed validated questionnaires assessing attachment to mothers, fathers, and peers, emotional regulation, and perceived academic sel

The Role of Physician Networks and Receipt of Opioid-Related Payments.

BACKGROUND: Opioid-related promotional payments are associated with increased prescribing of the promoted drug, but little is known about whether physicians receiving payments influence peers to accept similar payments. OBJECTIVE: We examine the association of physician network-level position among peers and the acceptance of opioid-related promotional payments using national publicly available datasets from 2015. Design National cross-sectional data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) National Downloadable File and Open Payment data. SUBJECTS: Physicians who shared Med

Concurrent psychosocial predictors of sun safety among middle school youth.

BACKGROUND: Sun-induced skin damage, which increases skin cancer risk, is initiated in early life and promoted through later sun exposure patterns. If sun safety determinants are well understood and addressed during the school years, skin cancer incidence might be reduced. This study tested psychosocial influences on youth's sun safety and assessed their strength within and across gender and ethnicity in a sample of 1782 middle school students. METHODS: Predictors included sunburn and skin cancer knowledge, tanning attitudes, peer norms, and barriers regarding sun exposure and were assessed w

The USA National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS): homophobia, psychological adjustment, and protective factors.

The study assessed the influence of protective factors on the psychological adjustment of children who had experienced homophobia and whose mothers were participants in a longitudinal study of planned lesbian families. Data were collected as part of the National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study by interviewing the children and having the mothers complete questionnaires. No significant differences were found in the psychological adjustment of children in the present study and their age-matched peers in a U.S.-population sample. Homophobia had a negative impact on the well-being of children who

Mental health trajectories and peer refugee helper engagement, among Afghan, Iranian and Syrian refugees and asylum seekers in Greece.

Peer Refugee Helpers (PRHs) support peers in humanitarian settings, which may influence their own mental health. This longitudinal study examined anxiety and depression trajectories among Afghan, Iranian and Syrian refugees and asylum seekers in Greece, focusing on how PRH status (paid/unpaid) and sense of coherence influence trajectory membership. The study included 176 adult, PRHs and non-helpers. The following scales were administered three times at ~4-month intervals: Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), Social Provisions Scale (SPS-24), Sense of Cohe

From friends to followers: How social media influences the relationship between friends' behaviors and disordered eating in adult men and women.

OBJECTIVE: The transformation framework conceptualizes social media as reshaping traditional peer influences and could enhance understanding of disordered eating. This cross-sectional study examined (1) independent associations of friend dieting and social media exposure with eating pathology, (2) whether social media exposure moderates the relationship between friend dieting and eating pathology, and (3) explored whether sex and age moderate independent and combined effects of friend dieting and social media exposure on eating pathology. METHOD: A large sample of men and women (N = 1860) ran…

Key influences on the decision to initiate PrEP among adolescent girls and young women within routine maternal child health and family planning clinics in Western Kenya.

We sought to understand influences on PrEP uptake among Kenyan adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) whose decision on PrEP use was misaligned with their risk for HIV acquisition. In-depth interviews were conducted with 47 Kenyan HIV-negative AGYW aged 15-24 years who were offered PrEP during routine maternal and child health and family planning services. AGYW were sampled from two groups (1) declined PrEP and had ≥1 sexual partner(s) of unknown HIV status and (2) initiated PrEP and reported having one HIV-negative partner. AGYW with HIV-negative partners initiated PrEP due to known or suspe

A Longitudinal Examination of Risk and Protective Factors Associated with Drug Use and Unsafe Sex among Young African American Females.

This study prospectively examined associations among multiple theoretically informed risk (e.g., depression, sexual sensation seeking, and risky peers norms) and protective factors (e.g., social support, STI knowledge, and refusal to have sex self efficacy) on unsafe sex among 715 African American adolescent females aged 15-21 who participated in an STI/HIV prevention intervention. Generalized estimating equation models were used to assess associations between baseline characteristics and sexual risk over a 12-month follow up period. Overall risk in this population was high: at baseline, nearl

The relationship between risk networks' patterns of crack cocaine and alcohol consumption and HIV-related sexual behaviors among adult injection drug users: a prospective study.

Social context may be an important determinant of drug and alcohol consumption and HIV-related behaviors. To assess the influence of peers on drug users' risk behaviors this study examined the association between individual level and group level behaviors. This analysis reports on the prospective association between baseline self-reported drug and alcohol use of the network members of injection drug users, and self-reported sexual behaviors and alcohol use at 5-month follow-up. Participants were a nontreatment sample of inner-city injection drug users who volunteered for a network-oriented HIV

High speed, high risk: the rise of e-scooter injuries in adolescents.

The popularity of eco-friendly electric scooters has led to a rise in significant injuries, especially in adolescents. Teens riding e-scooters are more prone to severe traffic accidents and head injuries compared to those using traditional scooters. Risk-taking behaviors, susceptibility to peer influence, limited road safety experience and a lack of protective headgear exacerbate the risks. These injuries impose a significant burden to patients and to the health care system. To mitigate these risks, age and helmet laws should be strictly enforced, with enhanced public education, safety trainin…
