Auditory-cognitive interactions underlying interaural asymmetry in an adult listener: a case study.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal interaural asymmetry on tests of dichotic listening is commonly observed in individuals suspected of auditory processing disorder (APD). Although a structural basis for the abnormality has been widely accepted, the influence of cognitive variables on the degree of observed asymmetry has gained increasing attention. To study this issue, we manipulated cognitive influences on interaural asymmetry in an adult with the auditory complaints typically associated with APD. STUDY SAMPLE: A 55 year-old woman with complaints of difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments de

Rapid completion effects in human high-order visual areas.

Object completion is an inherent property of visual recognition in which objects can be accurately perceived in the presence of substantial obstructions. We have previously shown [Cereb. Cortex 12 (2002) 163] that high-order human object areas are driven partially by local object fragments and partially by global completion effects. Here we explored, through a backward masking paradigm, whether the balance of local and global processing is time dependent, that is, to what extent completion effects evolve at a different time compared to local image representations. In two separate experiments,

Dichoptic movie viewing treats childhood amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-balanced dichoptic experience with perceptual-learning tasks or simple games has been shown to improve visual acuity significantly in amblyopia. However, these tasks are intensive and repetitive, and up to 40% of unsupervised patients are noncompliant. We investigated the efficacy of a potentially more engaging movie method to provide contrast-balanced binocular experience via complementary dichoptic stimulation. METHODS: Eight amblyopic children 4-10 years of age were enrolled in a prospective cohort study to watch 3 dichoptic movies per week for 2 weeks on a passive 3D

Visual engagement modulates cortical criticality and auditory target detection thresholds in noisy soundscapes.

The widely held assumption that closing eyes enhances auditory sensitivity has been supported by auditory attention experiments. However, the visual effects on auditory thresholds of detecting target sounds masked by noise remain unexplored. We investigated the participants' detection thresholds (n = 25) of target sounds (canoe paddle, drum, lark chirping, train, and keyboard) masked by 70 dB(A) pink noise under four visual conditions (eyes closed, eyes open with blank board, static visual stimulation, and dynamic visual stimulation). Taking blank visual stimulation as the baseline, eye closur

Chronic tinnitus is quietened by sound therapy using a novel cross-frequency de-correlating stimulus modulation.

We introduce a novel modulation of broadband sounds which eliminates correlations between all frequency pairs close to the tinnitus frequency, to reduce cross-frequency neural synchrony and thereby quieten tinnitus. Fifty-three unselected participants completed a blinded randomised crossover trial, which was run completely online using their computers or smartphones, comparing active to perceptually-near-identical sham stimuli, comprising two 6-week listening periods and 3-week washout periods. Results showed a significant, persisting, reduction in self-rated tinnitus loudness after the active

Effects of spatial configuration and fundamental frequency on speech intelligibility in multiple-talker conditions in the ipsilateral horizontal plane and median planea).

Spatial separation and fundamental frequency (F0) separation are effective cues for improving the intelligibility of target speech in multi-talker scenarios. Previous studies predominantly focused on spatial configurations within the frontal hemifield, overlooking the ipsilateral side and the entire median plane, where localization confusion often occurs. This study investigated the impact of spatial and F0 separation on intelligibility under the above-mentioned underexplored spatial configurations. The speech reception thresholds were measured through three experiments for scenarios involving

Influence of Protective Face Coverings on the Speech Recognition of Cochlear Implant Patients.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to characterize the effects of wearing face coverings on: 1) acoustic speech cues, and 2) speech recognition of patients with hearing loss who listen with a cochlear implant. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was performed in a tertiary referral center between July and September 2020. A female talker recorded sentences in three conditions: no face covering, N95 mask, and N95 mask plus a face shield. Spectral differences were analyzed between speech produced in each condition. The speech recognition in each condition for twenty-three adult patients with at lea

Electrophysiological markers of cochlear function correlate with hearing-in-noise performance among audiometrically normal subjects.

Hearing loss caused by noise exposure, ototoxic drugs, or aging results from the loss of sensory cells, as reflected in audiometric threshold elevation. Animal studies show that loss of hair cells can be preceded by loss of auditory-nerve peripheral synapses, which likely degrades auditory processing. While this condition, known as cochlear synaptopathy, can be diagnosed in mice by a reduction of suprathreshold cochlear neural responses, its diagnosis in humans remains challenging. To look for evidence of cochlear nerve damage in normal hearing subjects, we measured their word recognition perf

Auditory training program in subjects with tinnitus.

UNLABELLED: Tinnitus may be defined as the conscious perception of sound or noise, without the presence of external acoustic stimulation. Given the damage caused by tinnitus and the lack of effective treatment, alternatives are necessary to rehabilitate subjects with tinnitus. There is an assumption that auditory training (AT) could lead to a plastic reorganization of this system, thus promoting an improvement of the symptom. OBJECTIVE: To verify the effect of an AT program in subjects with tinnitus in the perception of this symptom. METHODS: Twelve subjects with tinnitus were included in th

Neural correlates of masked and unmasked face emotion processing in youth with severe mood dysregulation.

Reproducibility of results is important in improving the robustness of conclusions drawn from research, particularly in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In this study, we aim to replicate a previous study on the neural correlates of face emotion processing above and below awareness level using an independent sample of youth with severe mood dysregulation (SMD) and healthy volunteers (HV). We collected fMRI data in 17 SMD and 20 HV, using an affective priming paradigm with masked (17 ms) and unmasked (187 ms) faces (angry, happy, neutral, blank oval). When processing masked and unm

Effects of the intensity of masking noise on ear canal recorded low-frequency cochlear microphonic waveforms in normal hearing subjects.

Compared to auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), cochlear microphonics (CMs) may be more appropriate to serve as a supplement to the test of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs). Researchers have shown that low-frequency CMs from the apical cochlea are measurable at the tympanic membrane using high-pass masking noise. Our objective is to study the effect of such noise at different intensities on low-frequency CMs recorded at the ear canal, which is not completely known. Six components were involved in this CM measurement including an ear canal electrode (1), a relatively long and low-frequency tonebur

Auditory filter tuning inferred with short sinusoidal and notched-noise maskers.

The physiology of the medial olivocochlear reflex suggests that a sufficiently long stimulus (>100 ms) may reduce cochlear gain and result in broadened frequency selectivity. The current study attempted to avoid gain reduction by using short maskers (20 ms) to measure psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) and notched-noise tuning characteristics, with a 4-kHz signal. The influence of off-frequency listening on PTCs was evaluated using two types of background noise. Iso-level curves were derived using an estimate of the cochlear input/output (I/O) function, which was obtained using an off-frequen

Noise-induced changes in cochlear compression in the rat as indexed by forward masking of the auditory brainstem response.

The current study was undertaken to investigate changes in forward masking patterns using on-frequency and off-frequency maskers of 7 and 10 kHz probes in the Sprague-Dawley rat. Off-frequency forward masking growth functions have been shown in humans to be non-linear, while on-frequency functions behave linearly. The non-linear nature of the off-frequency functions is attributable to active processing from the outer hair cells, and was therefore expected to be sensitive to noise-induced cochlear damage. For the study, nine Sprague-Dawley rats' auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded

The effect of body posture on long-range time-to-contact estimation.

On Earth, gravity accelerates freely moving objects downward, whereas upward-moving objects are being decelerated. Do humans take internalised knowledge of gravity into account when estimating time-to-contact (TTC, the time remaining before the moving object reaches the observer)? To answer this question, we created a motion-prediction task in which participants saw the initial part of an object's trajectory moving on a collision course prior to an occlusion. Observers had to judge when the object would make contact with them. The visual scene was presented with a head-mounted display. Partici

Object-substitution masking modulates spatial attention deployment and the encoding of information in visual short-term memory: insights from occipito-parietal ERP components.

If object-substitution masking (OSM) arises from mask representations replacing target representations, OSM should impede the formation of representations in visual short-term memory (VSTM). We utilized event-related potentials to examine the effect of OSM on target processing. An N2pc was observed on trials with delayed-offset masks, indicating that focused attention was directed to the target. The sustained posterior contralateral negativity (SPCN), an index of VSTM storage, was observed in delayed-offset trials only on trials with correct responses. This supports the hypothesis that inaccur

Temporary shift in masked hearing thresholds in a harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) after exposure to seismic airgun stimuli.

An auditory study was conducted to derive data on temporary threshold shift (TTS) induced by single impulses. This information should serve as basis for the definition of noise exposure criteria for harbor porpoises. The measurements of TTS were conducted on a harbor porpoise by measuring the auditory evoked potentials in response to amplitude-modulated sounds. After obtaining baseline hearing data the animal was exposed to single airgun stimuli at increasing received levels. Immediately after each exposure the animal's hearing threshold was tested for significant changes. The received levels

Face processing in different brain areas, and critical band masking.

Neurophysiological evidence is described showing that some neurons in the macaque inferior temporal visual cortex have responses that are invariant with respect to the position, size, view, and spatial frequency of faces and objects, and that these neurons show rapid processing and rapid learning. Critical band spatial frequency masking is shown to be a property of these face-selective neurons and of the human visual perception of faces. Which face or object is present is encoded using a distributed representation in which each neuron conveys independent information in its firing rate, with li

Reflex control of the human inner ear: a half-octave offset in medial efferent feedback that is consistent with an efferent role in the control of masking.

The high sensitivity and frequency selectivity of the mammalian cochlea is due to amplification produced by outer hair cells (OHCs) and controlled by medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents. Data from animals led to the view that MOC fibers provide frequency-specific inhibitory feedback; however, these studies did not measure intact MOC reflexes. To test whether MOC inhibition is primarily at the frequency that elicits the MOC activity, acoustically elicited MOC effects were quantified in humans by the change in otoacoustic emissions produced by 60-dB SPL tone and half-octave-band noise elicitors
