Predicting personality pathology among adult patients with substance use disorders: effects of childhood maltreatment.

The purpose of this study was to examine predictive relationships between types of childhood maltreatment and personality disorders in a substance-abusing population. Three hundred thirty-nine drug- or alcohol-dependent patients completed a reliable and valid retrospective measure of childhood trauma, the CTQ, and a self-report inventory that assesses the entire range of DSM-III-R personality disorders, the PDQ-R. As a preliminary step, factor analyses were used to group personality disorders into the three DSM-III-R Axis II clusters (Clusters A, B, and C), although some diagnostic subclusters

Patients' anesthesia preferences for Cesarean delivery: exploring the role of personality beliefs in spinal vs. General anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the personality belief scores of patients who chose either general or spinal anesthesia during cesarean delivery (CD) and explore the relationship between personality beliefs, and anxiety levels. METHODS: This prospective study included expecting mothers, aged 18-45 years, who were classified as ASA II-III, scheduled for elective CD. Anesthesia (general or spinal) was selected based on the patient's preference. Patients with emergency CD indications, contraindications to either anesthesia type, or inability to complete the evaluation scales were exclude

Gastric acid secretion in relation to personality, affect and coping ability in duodenal ulcer patients. A multivariate analysis. Hvidovre Ulcer Project Group.

The role of personality, mood state (affect) and coping ability (ego strength) on basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion were assessed in 56 duodenal ulcer patients using the Minnesota, Multiphasic Personality Inventory. The patients had high scores on most MMPI scales, but basal acid output was related significantly only to the hypochondriasis scale and the validity scale L. Peak acid output was related significantly only to the validity scale L. Both basal and peak acid output were related significantly, but positively to coping ability. No relations were found to mood state. The person…

Personality-related core beliefs in patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia plus depression: A comparison with depressed and healthy control groups.

BACKGROUND: Personality has an important role in understanding both fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and major depressive disorder (MDD). AIMS: This study considers the question that specific personality features may characterize depressed FMS patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To this end, 125 individuals were included in the study: 40 of them diagnosed with FMS+ MDD, 40 with MDD only and 45 healthy controls. Individual Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Personality Belief Questionnaire-Short Form (PBQ-SF) scores were compared between the three groups. RESULTS: The mean scores for each personali

Paranoid personality has a dimensional latent structure: taxometric analyses of community and clinical samples.

Although paranoid personality is one of the most commonly diagnosed personality disorders and is associated with numerous negative life consequences, relatively little is known about the structural properties of this condition. This study examines whether paranoid personality traits represent a latent dimension or a discrete class (i.e., taxon). In Study 1, the authors conducted taxometric analyses of paranoid personality disorder criteria in a sample of 731 patients participating in the Collaborative Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders project (Gunderson et al., 2000) who had been adm

Borderline personality symptomatology and sexual impulsivity.

OBJECTIVE: According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, borderline personality disorder (BPD) is an Axis II phenomenon that is characterized by impulsivity, including sexual impulsivity. However, little empirical research has been undertaken to confirm and/or define the nature of sexual impulsivity in patients with BPD, which is the focus of the present study. METHOD: Using a cross-sectional approach and sample of convenience, we surveyed 76 women who were being seen as outpatients in an internal medicine clinic regarding: a) borderline personality symp

An examination of the relationship between personality patterns and symptom/mood patterns.

Relationships between various personality styles measured by the basic and pathological personality scales of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) and mood or symptom states measured by the Profile of Mood State scales were examined. The MCMI personality scale-POMS symptom/mood scale relationships found in this study are compared with MCMI personality scale-MMPI and SCL-90 symptom/mood scale relationships reported in the MCMI manual. Consistent associations of moderate strength were found between: (a) the MCMI Compulsive-Conforming and Passive-Aggressive (Negativistic) scales (negat

Exploring effectiveness of CBT in obese patients with binge eating disorder: personality functioning is associated with clinically significant change.

BACKGROUND: Binge eating disorder (BED), as the most prevalent eating disorder, is strongly related to obesity and other somatic and psychiatric morbidity. Despite evidence-based treatments a considerable number of BED patients fail to recover. There is preliminary evidence for the association between psychodynamic personality functioning and personality traits on treatment outcome. However, research is limited and results are still contradictory. Identifying variables associated with treatment outcome could improve treatment programs. The aim of the study was to explore whether personality fu

Posttraumatic Stress Symptom Heterogeneity in World Trade Center Responders: Relations to Maladaptive Personality Traits.

BACKGROUND: There has been growing interest in symptom heterogeneity in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet examinations of personality variation across symptom typologies have been largely limited to veteran samples. METHODS: The present study expands this literature by examining self-reported PTSD symptoms (PTSD Checklist for DSM-IV) and potentially maladaptive personality traits (Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III) in 516 treatment-seeking World Trade Center (WTC) rescue, recovery, and cleanup workers (mean age = 51.1; 75% male). RESULTS: Latent class analysis identified five

Understanding the relationship between personality pathology and attachment style in the context of the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders.

This study utilizes the two different criteria of the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorder Assessment to evaluate the relationship between attachment style and personality pathology. One-hundred forty patients from a combined sample of psychiatric and internal medicine clinics were given a survey composed of the DSM-5 Levels of Personality Functioning Questionnaire (DLOPFQ), the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form (PID-5-BF), and the Relationship Questionnaire (RQ). Analysis of variance indicated that attachment styles were differentiated across all four the DLOPFQ scales and…

A Hierarchical Integration of Normal and Abnormal Personality Dimensions: Structure and Predictive Validity in a Heterogeneous Sample of Psychiatric Outpatients.

Hierarchical, quantitative models of psychopathology focus primarily on higher-order constructs, whereas less is known about the structure and content comprising lower-order dimensions of psychopathology. Here, we address this gap in the literature by using targeted factor analysis to integrate the 25 maladaptive facet-level traits of the Personality Inventory for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder-Fifth edition and the 10 aspect-level traits of the normal personality hierarchy within a sample of 198 psychiatric outpatients. A 10-factor solution replicated previous work, with…

Personality as a predictor of depression symptoms in burn patients: a follow-up study.

There is empirical evidence that having some personality characteristics increases the risk of developing depression. This is the first study which analyses the role of personality dimensions, assessed by the Alternative Five Factor Model, in the development of depressive symptoms in adult burn survivors across time. Participants were 109 adult burn survivors admitted to a Burns Unit. Personality was assessed by the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire and depression symptoms by the Beck Depression Inventory. After adjusting by age, gender and burn size, results showed that high Neuroti

The child behavior checklist dysregulation profile predicts adolescent DSM-5 pathological personality traits 4 years later.

Emotional dysregulation in childhood has been associated with various forms of later psychopathology, although no studies have investigated the personality related adolescent outcomes associated with early emotional dysregulation. The present study uses a typological approach to examine how the child behavior checklist-dysregulation profile (CBCL-DP) predicts DSM-5 pathological personality traits (as measured with the personality inventory for the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders 5 or PID-5 by Krueger et al. (Psychol Med 2012)) across a time span of 4 years in a sample of …

Associations between repression, general maladjustment, body weight, and body shape in older males: the Normative Aging Study.

We examined relationships between repression, general maladjustment, body mass index (BMI), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). The participants were 1,081 healthy older men from the Normative Aging Study. Repression and General Maladjustment Scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory were composite measures of personality. Repression was associated with lower BMI and WHR, and maladjustment with higher BMI and WHR. However, associations between WHR and personality dimensions were no longer significant when controlling for BMI, but associations between BMI and personality dimensions re…

Group schema therapy versus group cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder with comorbid avoidant personality disorder: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) with comorbid avoidant personality disorder (APD) has a high prevalence and is associated with serious psychosocial problems and high societal costs. When patients suffer from both SAD and APD, the Dutch multidisciplinary guidelines for personality disorders advise offering prolonged cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Recently there is increasing evidence for the effectiveness of schema therapy (ST) for personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder and cluster C personality disorders. Since ST addresses underlying personality character

The structure of pathological personality traits and temperament in a Persian community sample.

The present study examined the extent to which the currently established factor structure of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5; Krueger et al., 2013) generalizes to a large Persian community sample, as well as relations between the resulting PID-5 factors and two temperament measures. Cross-sectional data came from 946 adults (65% female) from western Iran. With the use of exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) with target rotation, we found factor loadings that showed fairly similar patterns to those found in two previous meta-analytic PID-5 studies with predominantly North …

Normal and Maladaptive Personality Traits as Predictors of Motives for Social Media Use and Its Effects on Well-Being.

This study aimed to identify the motives for social media sites use in the general population and determine what personality traits (normal and maladaptive) predict different motives for social media sites use. Another objective was to analyze which motives for SMSs use are related to well-being. The sample consisted of 420 subjects (211 men, 209 women), mean age 40.29 years (SD = 14.93). Data were gathered using the Big Five Inventory, the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form -Adult, the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form, and a scale designed ad hoc to evaluate the motives for social m…

Psychosomatic aspects of urinary incontinence.

Psychosomatic aspects of urogynecological disorders may play an important role in their clinical presentation. 72 patients presenting to the urogynecological clinics and a control group of 34 healthy women were included in this study. After informed consent had been obtained, all patients were subjected to (1) a detailed enquiry about personal- and medical history (2) psychological tests (Freiburg's personality inventory, a questionnaire focused on anxiety and anger, and Beck's depression inventory) and (3) routine urodynamic measurement. Patients with stress incontinence had a mean duration o…
