Emotions, thoughts and motives affecting return-to-work and employment decisions: A qualitative study covering the perspective of people with spinal cord injury and their employers.

BackgroundAlthough individuals who experience spinal cord injury (SCI) face significant challenges in entering and sustaining employment, there is limited evidence on how psychological factors shape their employment decisions and those of potential employers.ObjectiveThis qualitative study aimed to identify emotions, thoughts, and motives of persons who experience SCI and employers that influence their decision to return to or continue competitive employment.MethodsWe conducted problem-centered interviews with ten individuals who experience SCI and ten employers who had recently been involved

["The system is still precarious". Barriers in access to medical abortion: the experience of accompanying persons in three regions of Mexico].

The study aimed to identify the most frequent barriers in access to abortions in both clandestine and legal clinical contexts, from the perspective of accompanying persons, namely feminist activists who accompanied women that opted for voluntary abortions with medication. We performed 14 semi-structured interviews with accompanying persons in three regions of Mexico: Baja California and Chiapas, both of which are restrictive contexts, and Mexico City, where elective abortion is legal up to 12 weeks' gestational age. We identified four categories in which the social vulnerabilities of women who

Investigating Outbreaks of Salmonella Typhimurium Using Case-Control Studies, with a Reference to the One Health Approach.

An outbreak is defined as the occurrence of disease cases in excess of normal expectancy within a particular area and a given time. Foodborne outbreaks caused by gastrointestinal bacteria such as Salmonella Typhimurium are among the most commonly reported and most extensively investigated. The classic outbreak investigation follows a series of well-defined steps which lead to a faster confirmation of the source and hopefully preventing of further cases. These steps are ideally undertaken using a One Health cross-sectorial collaboration approach involving partners from public health, food safet

Perspective: Using Bronchiectasis Action Management Plans for Children With Bronchiectasis-Can It Improve Clinical Care?

While once thought to be rare, bronchiectasis has been increasing globally over the last 15 years. Bronchiectasis is a major contributor to chronic lung morbidity and mortality but remains a neglected disease in respiratory health globally. Currently, few high-level evidence-based management strategies are available for children with bronchiectasis. Strategies to improve clinical outcomes associated with exacerbations are important. In other respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, use of personalized written management plans have been shown to improve c

Has the Time Come to Stratify and Score SUDEP Risk to Inform People With Epilepsy of Their Changes in Safety?

Recent publication of the American Academy of Neurology SUDEP guidance highlighted the importance to American clinicians of making people with epilepsy aware of SUDEP risk. It is the first guideline to do this in the United States. It follows precedent set out in the UK by National Institute of Clinical Excellence in 2004. While a significant achievement, the lack of clarity of how to deliver this guidance in an enduring and person-centered manner, raises concerns on how its long-term effectiveness in risk mitigation. Shared decision-making with an emphasis on delivering person-centered commun

Latent Profiles of Big Five Personality Traits in First Responders: Associations with PTSD, Psychological Distress, Social Support, Attachment, and Emotion Regulation Strategies.

First responders are routinely exposed to trauma, elevating risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related psychological difficulties. Personality traits influence adjustment through appraisals, emotion regulation, attachment, and social support; however, their role in this population is understudied. A sample of 341 Portuguese first responders (80.1% male; mean age = 34.2) completed measures of Big Five traits, PTSD symptoms, distress, attachment, social support, and emotion regulation. Latent profile analysis identified four profiles. One, marked by high neuroticism and low consc

Drowning deaths among anglers: Are waders a contributing factor?

Recreational fishing has been a popular activity for Australians over at least the past two centuries. While the use of waders for recreational fishing is widely adopted by participants, there is considerable speculation as to whether waders are contributing to fishing-related drowning deaths. This study involved a comprehensive search of peer-reviewed and grey literature to identify relevant information and a pilot investigation in a swimming pool to understand the accuracy of the currently available information. Extensive searching indicated that there is no published peer-reviewed evidence

Mechanisms to Promote Social Integration in a Temporary Housing Program for Older Persons Experiencing and At-Risk of Homelessness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social integration-the degree to which a person is socially connected and engaged with other people-is a programmatic goal of supportive housing models and a predictor of successful housing outcomes among clients. Although research has examined social integration within permanent supportive housing models, minimal research has considered how social integration may be promoted within temporary housing programs (THPs), particularly for older persons. This study examines experiences of social integration, connection, and participation within a scattered-site THP for old

Attrition, adherence, and compliance to exercise training interventions in persons with traumatic brain injury: a systematic review of training studies.

BACKGROUND: Exercise training (ET) is a promising rehabilitation approach for long-term negative consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, little is known regarding overall rates of attrition, adherence, and compliance to ET in TBI. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this systematic review was to estimate average attrition, adherence, and compliance rates in ET studies in persons with TBI. METHODS: Databases were searched from inception to April 15, 2024. Two authors independently extracted data related to attrition, adherence, compliance, and possible moderators identified a priori. Multisystemic Resources Matter for Resilience to Depression: Learning From a Sample of Young South African Adults.

This article interrogates the continuing emphasis on personal sources of resilience; it also amends the inattention to the protective factors and processes (PFPs) that support the mental health resilience of African emerging adults. To that end, we report a study that explored which PFPs distinguished risk-exposed South African 18- to 29-year-olds with negligible depression symptoms from those who reported moderate to severe symptoms. Using an arts-based approach, young people volunteered the PFPs they had personally experienced as resilience-enabling. An inductive thematic analysis of visual

Using Medical Big Data to Develop Personalized Medicine for Dry Eye Disease.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a chronic, multifactorial ocular surface disorder with multiple etiologies that results in tear film instability. Globally, the prevalence of DED is expected to increase with an aging society and daily use of digital devices. Unfortunately, the medical field is currently unprepared to meet the medical needs of patients with DED. Noninvasive, reliable, and readily reproducible biomarkers have not yet been identified, and the current mainstay treatment for DED relies on symptom alleviation using eye drops with no effective preventative therapies available. Medical big da

Ebola Virus Dose Response Model for Aerosolized Exposures: Insights from Primate Data.

This study develops dose-response models for Ebolavirus using previously published data sets from the open literature. Two such articles were identified in which three different species of nonhuman primates were challenged by aerosolized Ebolavirus in order to study pathology and clinical disease progression. Dose groups were combined and pooled across each study in order to facilitate modeling. The endpoint of each experiment was death. The exponential and exact beta-Poisson models were fit to the data using maximum likelihood estimation. The exact beta-Poisson was deemed the recommended mode

Do psychiatric disorders moderate the relationship between psychological distress and sexual risk-taking behaviors in young men who have sex with men? A longitudinal perspective.

Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) account for two-thirds of new HIV infections in young people in the United States. Identifying between-person and within-person correlates of sexual risk-taking provides critical information for developing behavioral prevention efforts for this group. Possible predictors of sexual-risk behavior in YMSM include major depressive disorder (MDD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and variation in psychological distress over time. To date, research has been equivocal with regard to the relationship between psychiatric disorders, psychological distress, an

Understanding Health Information Needs: An Evaluation of Co-Design Video-Assisted Education.

People with cancer and their families are often provided with a range of complex written and verbal information to help them manage treatment and side effects at home. This study explored the health information needs of patients and family members and investigated the influence of video-assisted health education on their understanding of the information. A co-design framework with health consumers and clinicians was used to identify concepts and create videos. Qualitative interviews with a thematic analysis explored their health information needs and the influence of the videos. The sample was

Person identity-specific adaptation effects in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex.

Identifying the faces of familiar persons requires the ability to assign several different images of a face to a common identity. Previous research showed that the occipito-temporal cortex, including the fusiform and the occipital face areas, is sensitive to personal identity. Still, the viewpoint, facial expression and image-independence of this information are currently under heavy debate. Here we adapted a rapid serial visual stimulation paradigm Johnston et al. (2016, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cortex.2016.10.002) and presented highly variable ambient-face images of famous persons to measur

Correlation of neurological level and sweating level of injury in persons with spinal cord injury.

Objective: Thermoregulatory dysfunction after spinal cord injury (SCI) impairs quality of life and predisposes persons to life-threatening sequela of heat-related illness (HRI) in conditions of high ambient temperature. SCI clinicians currently have no objective way to predict which persons are at greatest risk of HRI. Evaporative cooling via sweating is the body's most efficient mechanism of heat dissipation. The relationship between the neurological level of injury (NLOI) and the degree of sudomotor dysfunction is not well defined. This study examines the relationship between the NLOI and sw

Cross-cultural structures of personal name systems reflect general communicative principles.

The structure of personal names appears to differ widely across cultures. Using census records and historical datasets, we present an information-theoretic analysis of name systems that shows how the scope of this variation is more constrained than it might appear. We identify two constraints name systems must satisfy: encoding large numbers of identities, and ensuring these encodings are usable. We show that, historically, the world's languages satisfied these constraints using structurally similar, near-optimal codes. They did so by combining sets of name-specific words with existing vocabul
