BACKGROUND: Amputation of a lower-limb results in a severe decrease of functional mobility that deeply alters independent living. Motor imagery (MI) refers to the mental representation of an action without engaging its actual execution. The repetitive use of MI has been shown to contribute to promote motor recovery and phantom-limb pain alleviation.
AIM: Given the importance of invoking accurate images to benefit from MI practice, and considering the link between motor capacities and MI, the present study investigated the effect of a rehabilitation program on MI ability in patients with lower

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source, often considered a phantom percept similar to phantom limb sensations, resulting from maladaptive plasticity in the brain. The condition lacks an established biomarker for diagnosis but recent studies have linked it to neural changes. The Tinnitus Detection consortium aims to identify and validate potential biomarkers for tinnitus presence and intensity.
METHODS/DESIGN: This multicentre prospective case-control study will recruit 560 adults (280 chronic tinnitus; 280 controls). Participants will complete standardised …

In a 5-year prospective study, computed tomographic (CT) morphometry of the lumbosacral vertebral canal was performed on 42 large-breed dogs (21 controls and 21 dogs with lumbosacral stenosis). Dogs were allotted to 4 groups. Group 1 (n = 13) consisted of cadaver specimens obtained from dogs that died or were euthanatized for reasons unrelated to the spine; group 2 (n = 8) consisted of live dogs with no history of clinical signs related to the spine and with normal neurologic examination findings; group 3 (n = 10) consisted of dogs with surgically confirmed lumbosacral stenosis; and group 4 (n

BACKGROUND: TG-43 formalism dose calculation for brachytherapy with the homogeneous water-based assumption is widely used, which can lead to dose inaccuracy in treatment planning.
PURPOSE: Extremity malignancies are also treated with high-dose-rate (HDR) 192Ir interstitial brachytherapy, a treatment site that has not been specifically investigated in prior comparative dosimetric studies, and the proximity of source dwell positions to bone and air introduces significant heterogeneity. BrachyPlanCheck, an in-house brachytherapy second dose verification program for Monte Carlo (MC) simulations,

BACKGROUND: Bilateral proximal upper limb loss is a dramatic life-changing event. Replacement of the lost function with prosthetic arms, including multiple mechatronic joints, has remained a challenge from the control, comfort, and pain management perspectives. Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) is a peripheral nerve surgical procedure proposed to improve the intuitive control of the prosthetic arm and for neuroma and phantom pain management. Moreover, osseointegrated percutaneous implants (OPIs) allow for direct skeletal attachment of the prosthetic arm, ensuring freedom of movement to the p

OBJECTIVE: Sensory input in lower-limb amputees is critically important to maintaining balance, preventing falls, negotiating uneven terrain, responding to unexpected perturbations, and developing the confidence required for societal participation and public interactions in unfamiliar environments. Despite noteworthy advances in robotic prostheses for lower-limb amputees, such as microprocessor knees and powered ankles, natural somatosensory feedback from the lost limb has not yet been incorporated in current prosthetic technologies.
APPROACH: In this work, we report eliciting somatic sensati

AIM: To study long-term outcome of unilateral above-knee amputation.
OBJECTIVE: Long-term clinical symptoms and functional status of above-knee amputees are not well documented. The purpose of this study was to document the long-term outcome of war related above-knee amputations.
CONTEXT: The study consisted of a comprehensive assessment and examination and review of history and wartime medical records of 31 Iranian above-knee amputees from the Iraq-Iran war by using a detailed questionnaire. The average follow-up was 17.5 years (range from 15 to 22 years). All patients were males and had be

Ultrasound is a cost-effective, readily available, and non-ionizing modality for musculoskeletal imaging. Though some research groups have pursued methods that involve submerging the transducer and imaged body segment into a water bath, many limitations remain in regards to acquiring an unloaded volumetric image of an entire human limb in a fast, safe, and adequately accurate manner. A 3D dataset of a limb is useful in several rehabilitative applications including biomechanical modeling of soft tissue, prosthetic socket design, monitoring muscle condition and disease progression, bone health,

In this study, we describe four new patients with sickle cell disease who had limb amputations. Two of the patients had sickle cell anemia [Hb S (HBB: c.20A > T) (β(S)/β(S))] with refractory leg ulcers that required amputations. The third patient had sickle cell trait with an extensive leg ulcer that was associated with epidermoid carcinoma. The fourth patient had amputations of both forearms and feet due to a misdiagnosis of dactylitis. Review of the literature showed that the indications for amputations in sickle cell disease included three distinct categories: mythical beliefs, therapeutic

The choice of a myoelectric or body-powered upper-limb prosthesis can be determined using factors including control, function, feedback, cosmesis, and rejection. Although body-powered and myoelectric control strategies offer unique functions, many prosthesis users must choose one. A systematic review was conducted to determine differences between myoelectric and body-powered prostheses to inform evidence-based clinical practice regarding prescription of these devices and training of users. A search of 9 databases identified 462 unique publications. Ultimately, 31 of them were included and 11 e

This study identified clinical (e.g., etiology) and demographic factors related to prosthesis use in persons with upper- and lower-limb amputation (ULA and LLA, respectively) and the effect of phantom limb pain (PLP) and residual limb pain (RLP) on prosthesis use. A total of 752 respondents with LLA and 107 respondents with ULA completed surveys. Factors related to greater use (hours per day) for persons with LLA included younger age, full- or part-time employment, marriage, a distal amputation, an amputation of traumatic etiology, and an absence of PLP. Less use was associated with reports th…

Limb sparing surgery has replaced the amputation surgery in the treatment of limb sarcomas. Recurrent or persistent disease constitutes a major problem. Local symptoms such as agonizing pain, fractures, tumor fungation, inability to walk and inability to maintain daily activities, further impair the patient's quality of life. In this clinical set-up palliative amputation should be considered. Eighteen patients with soft-tissue or bone sarcomas and 3 patients with metastatic carcinoma underwent palliative major amputation. Hemipelvectomy was performed in 3 patients, hip disarticulation in 10, k

OBJECTIVES: Conflict between motor-sensory central nervous processing has been suggested as one cause of pain in those conditions where a demonstrable or local nociceptive aetiology cannot be convincingly established (e.g. complex regional pain syndrome type 1, repetitive strain injury, phantom limb pain and focal hand dystonia). The purpose of this study was to discover whether pain could be induced in pain-free healthy volunteers when this conflict was generated transiently in a laboratory setting.
METHODS: Forty-one consecutively recruited healthy adult volunteers without a history of moto…
