Community-based HbA1c testing programme for early detection of undiagnosed diabetes in community pharmacy.

OBJECTIVE: Testing with fingertip blood sampling, including HbA1c testing, has been available in community pharmacies in Japan since 2014. In 2016, the Mihara Pharmacy Association in Hiroshima Prefecture, in collaboration with the Mihara municipal government, developed a community programme that utilized the walk-in HbA1c test that could be offered by participating community pharmacies. The aim of this study was to assess whether the new programme could detect undiagnosed DM in the community and to compare groups who had and had not accessed the SHCG programme among SHCG eligible participants.…

Natural product chemistry as an important topic in pharmacy education: Situational analysis and recommendations.

BACKGROUND: The foundational discipline from which the practice of Pharmacy has emerged is commonly recognized as Pharmacognosy. This field can be defined as the study of medicinal plants and their derivatives, reflecting the historical evolution of drug use, which has transitioned from the formulation of crude herbal remedies to the sophisticated isolation and characterization of active pharmaceutical compounds in the realm of drug discovery. No scientific subject remains static and a modern and comprehensive definition of Pharmacognosy includes the analysis of biogenic or naturally derived p…

Equity of delivery: access to voluntary assisted dying substances using a centralised pharmacy model.

OBJECTIVE: Queensland implemented a centralised voluntary assisted dying (VAD) pharmacy model to promote safety, consistency and equitable access to VAD substances. In a geographically dispersed state, such as Queensland, a potential concern is whether centralisation affects time-to-delivery (TTD) for patients in regional and rural areas. This audit examined whether differences exist in TTD between South East Queensland (SEQ; metropolitan) and non-SEQ (non-metropolitan) patients, and explored reasons for prescription and visit cancellations to determine whether geographic factors, particularly…

Community Pharmacy Opioid Risk Screening Assessments: Comparing older adults (65+) to those under 65.

Background Older adults are at increased risk for opioid-related harm due to decreased drug metabolism and elimination, polypharmacy, and comorbid conditions. The ONE (Opioid and Naloxone Education) Program is a pharmacy-based opioid risk mitigation initiative that employs evidence-based patient screening to identify risk of opioid-use-disorder (OUD) and opioid overdose (OD). Based on screening results, pharmacists provide patient-specific education and interventions. Objective To compare the risk of OUD, OD, and the opioid harm reduction interventions provided to adults aged 65 and older to t…

When do supply-side drug control policies save lives? Evidence from pharmacy methadone restrictions.

The literature commonly finds that supply-side drug control policies are an ineffective response to drug epidemics because they cause substitution to more dangerous illicit drugs. We document a policy that was implemented in response to the intertwined methadone and prescription opioid epidemics in the U.S. in the early 2000s and that sharply contradicts this. In 2008, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and drug manufacturers halted shipments of highly potent methadone formulations to all pharmacies nationwide due to concerns over their involvement in rising overdose death rates. However

Actions Needed for Pharmacy-Dispensed Methadone for Opioid Use Disorder in the United States.

Methadone is an essential tool for addressing opioid use disorder, especially with the prevalence of high-potency synthetic opioids in the drug supply. The current care delivery model in the United States with siloed methadone clinics has many limitations. Legislation has been proposed to expand access to methadone to office-based settings with pharmacy dispensing. Even with legal and regulatory changes, there are many practical barriers to implementation which include insurance coverage and patient cost, prior authorizations, and stocking of methadone. Practical steps for clinicians and polic…

Assessment of the knowledge, attitudes, and risk perceptions of pharmacy students regarding HIV/AIDS.

BACKGROUND: We recognize AIDS and HIV as serious public health concerns. One of the primary roles of pharmacists is to counsel patients, which is critical in improving patient care outcomes. Therefore, having an adequate understanding of HIV among undergraduates helps them at their practice sites. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and risk perceptions of pharmacy students regarding HIV/AIDS. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among pharmacy students from December 2023 to April 2024 using structured questionnaires. We collected the data from randomly…

Impact of a Hospital-Based Food Pharmacy Program on Health Outcomes of Vulnerable Patients.

Access to healthy foods, especially for those who are living with diabetes and hypertension, is crucial in managing these chronic diseases. This study evaluates the implementation of a food pharmacy and food prescription program at a safety-net hospital that serves vulnerable populations. Patients who screen as food insecure using the USDA adult food security survey receive a referral from the physician to the food pharmacy program where a dietician reviews their dietary requirements based on their chronic disease and develops a diet plan. Patients then receive fresh produce, meats and other p…

Using Belgian pharmacy dispensing data to assess antibiotic use for children in ambulatory care.

BACKGROUND: The desired effect of antibiotics is compromised by the rapid escalation of antimicrobial resistance. Children are particularly at high-risk for unnecessary antibiotic prescribing, which is owing to clinicians' diagnostic uncertainty combined with parents' concerns and expectations. Recent Belgian data on ambulatory antibiotic prescribing practices for children are currently lacking. Therefore, we aim to analyse different aspects of antibiotic prescriptions for children in ambulatory care. METHODS: Pharmacy dispensing data on antibiotics for systematic use referring from 2010 to 2…

A participatory research approach in community pharmacy research: The case for video-reflexive ethnography.

Video-reflexive ethnography (VRE) is a qualitative methodology that explores the complex nature of healthcare 'as it really is'. Its collaborative and reflexive process invites stakeholders (e.g. pharmacists and pharmacy support staff) to participate in analysing their everyday work practices as captured on video footage. Through close collaboration with practitioners and attention to their work contexts, VRE may be a useful methodology to engage a time-poor pharmacy workforce in research about themselves, encouraging more practitioner involvement in practice-based research. Aside from researc…
