Phosphorus removal from agricultural wastewater streams is an important aspect of managing surface water quality, due to the contribution of phosphorus to eutrophication. A phosphate complexation model is developed, in an attempt to understand the mechanistic basis of chemically mediated phosphate removal. The model presented here is based on geochemical reaction modeling techniques and uses known surface reactions possible on hydrous ferric oxide (HFO). This study investigated the effectiveness of bioretention as a stormwater management practice using repetitive bioretention columns for phosphorus removal. A new series of phosphorus-containing 11beta-aryl-substituted steroids have been synthesized in an eight-step sequence involving a palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction to introduce a phosphorus group onto the aromatic ring. The compounds were evaluated for progesterone receptor (PR) antagonist activity in a T47D cell-based assay and for glucocorticoid receptor (GR) antagonist activity in an A549 cell-based assay. The structure-activity relationships of these compounds are discussed. Selected compounds were tested in vivo in a rat complement C3 assay.

Systematic study undertaken of 44 transplant patients with plasma creatinine below 0.11 mmol/L indicated renal phosphorus leak in approximately two-thirds of them and increased plasma PTH in all but one.
