A TiO2-boron doped diamond (TiO2-BDD) heterojunction was employed as a photocatalyst to simultaneously oxidize an azo dye C.I. reactive yellow 15 (RY15) and reduce hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). Tungsten trioxide thin films on transparent substrates (glass and F:SnO(2) or ITO-coated glass) were prepared by layer-by-layer brush painting and spin-coating using organic precursors. We have characterized commercially available up-converting inorganic lanthanide phosphors for their rare earth composition and photoluminescence properties under infrared laser diode excitation. These up-converting phosphors, in contrast to proprietary materials reported earlier, are readily available to be utilized as particulate reporters in various ligand binding assays after grinding to submicron particle size. The laser power density required at 980 nm to generate anti-Stokes photoluminescence from these particulate reporters is significantly lower than required for two-photon excitation.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), an anticarcinogenic compound with numerous other health benefits, is present mainly in dairy and beef lipids. Composite ZnO/SnO2 catalyst has been studied for the sensitized degradation of dyes e.g. Eosin Y (2', 4', 5', 7'-tetrabromofluorescein disodium salt) in relation to efficient charge separation properties of the catalyst. To better understand DNA photodamage, several nucleosides were studied by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. A 263-nm, 150-fs ultraviolet pump pulse excited each nucleoside in aqueous solution, and the subsequent dynamics were followed by transient absorption of a femtosecond continuum pulse at wavelengths between 270 and 700 nm. A transient absorption band with maximum amplitude near 600 nm was detected in protonated guanosine at pH 2. The phototoxic diuretic drug furosemide (1), a 5-(aminosulfonyl)-4-chloro-2-[(2-furanylmethyl)-amino] benzoic acid is photolabile under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The high photosensibility of bilirubin represents the main reason why neonatal jaundice is treated with light. The relaxation processes of excited bilirubin appear to be governed by complex mechanisms which are not fully known. At room temperature, radiationless channels, such as Z----E configurational photoisomerizations and internal conversions, contribute mostly to the deactivation of singlet excited bilirubin. Exciton coupling processes between the two pyrromethenone chromophores constituting the molecule may play a crucial role in bilirubin photophysics.
